월드컵 공동 개최국으로 자동 본선에 오른 아시아 최강.
80년대까지 이웃 한국과 중동세에 밀려 아시아의 벽을 넘지 못하다 지난 93년 J-리그 도입을 계기로 무서운 속도로 성장을 거듭, 어느새 아시아를 넘어 세계무대로 진입했다. '98프랑스월드컵에서 첫 본선 무대를 밟아 3전 전패의 초라한 성적으로 탈락했지만 아르헨티나 등 강호들을 맞아 매경기 선전하며 새로운 가능성을 확인했다. 지난해에는 간판스타인 플레이메이커 나카타 히데토시가 빠진 가운데 사우디아라비아를 4-1로 꺾는 파죽지세로 아시아선수권을 제패한 데 이어 올해 컨페더레이션스컵 준우승을 차지하며 `탈(脫) 아시아'를 선언하기에 이르렀다. 일본이 이처럼 급성장한 배경에는 아낌없는 투자에 힘입은 탄탄한 인프라와 축구인들의 뼈를 깎는 노력이 있었다. J-리그 출범과 함께 남미와 유럽에서 세계적 지도자와 선수를 대거 영입해 선진기술을 전수받았고 이러한 토대 위에서 '98프랑스월드컵 후 영입한 필립 트루시에(프랑스) 감독의 지도 속에 일본 특유의 조직축구를 만들어가고 있다. 대표팀은 `축구영웅' 나카타를 비롯, 오노, 이나모토, 니시자와, 다카하라, 골키퍼 가와구치 등 유럽과 남미 진출 선수들이 공,수에서 핵을 이루고 있다. 일본축구의 강점은 체력 소모가 적은 팀 플레이와 짧고 빠른 패스에 의한 공간 침투가 가능한 효율성, 즉 유기적 플레이에 있다. 전형은 수비수 3명을 세운 스리백을 쓰지만 수비시 좌,우 윙백이 가세하면서 고무줄처럼 움직이는 5인 마크로 전환해 틈을 찾기가 여간 어렵지 않다. ▲인구:1억2천556만

Home advantage will help build on recent progress
In the past, the road to the FIFA World Cup™ finals for Japan has been littered with disappointment and near-misses, none more so than when they failed to qualify for USA 94 by conceding a last minute goal in their final match against Iraq, the draw costing them a place at their first-ever FIFA World Cup finals. Thanks mainly to the advent of the J.League, however, Japan has come a long way since then, with an impressive youth system bringing through the talent that coach Philippe Troussier has moulded into a unit that has steadily climbed the FIFA rankings and dominated at continental level. The Frenchman's appointment after the three defeats during France 98 - Japan's first-ever FIFA World Cup - was met with some surprise, but the former Nigeria and Burkina Faso coach took Japan to victory in the Asian Cup in Lebanon in 2000 and the final of the FIFA Confederations' Cup the following year. Japan's success has been built on the team that Troussier took to the final of the FIFA World Youth Championship in Nigeria in 1999, combined with several more experienced players, such as Parma's Hidetoshi Nakata, the most recognisable and successful of the country's European exports. Others are coming through too, though, with Junichi Inamoto proving inspirational in front of the defence during Japan's successful run, his form earning him a move to English Premier League side Arsenal.
