일본과 공동 개최국으로서 2002월드컵 본선에 자동 출전해 5회 연속,
통산 6번째 본선무대를 밟는다.
목표는 월드컵 사상 첫 1승과 함께 16강 진출. 첫 본선무대였던 54년 스위스월드컵에서 헝가리에 0-9, 터키에 0-7로 대패했던 한국은 차범근이 노장 투혼을 불사른 '86멕시코월드컵 이후 98년까지 4회 연속 본선에 나갔으나 유럽의 높은 벽만 확인한 채 서둘러 귀국길에 올라야 했다. '98프랑스월드컵 조별리그에서 `오렌지군단' 네덜란드에 0-5 참패의 수모를 당하며 탈락의 멍에를 쓴 뒤로 2000시드니올림픽 1회전 탈락, 아시안컵 3위 등 뚜렷한 하강곡선을 그리며 이웃 일본에 아시아의 맹주 자리를 내주고 말았다. 감독만 바꾸는 악순환 끝에 올해 '98월드컵에서 조국 네덜란드를 4강에 올린 거스 히딩크 감독을 거액에 영입, 유럽축구 접목을 통한 재도약을 노리고 있다. FIFA랭킹은 43위로 아시아 본선 출전 4개국 가운데 3위. 황선홍, 유상철, 최용수, 최성용, 김병지 등 프랑스월드컵에 출전했던 노장들이 팀의 주축이지만 송종국, 설기현, 최태욱, 이천수 등 히딩크 감독이 뽑은 `젊은피'가 급부상하면서 신구간 조화가 뚜렷해졌다. 최근 크로아티아와의 평가전에서 1승1무를 기록하며 유럽징크스를 어느정도 털어내는 등 발전 가능성을 보였지만 16강이 가능할까란 질문에는 축구인들과 국민 대다수가 어렵다고 전망할 정도로 상황이 좋지 않다. 전형은 히딩크 취임 후 선진축구를 지향한다며 4-4-2로 전환했다가 전술 숙지도가 낮고 시간 부족을 이유로 전통의 스리백으로 회귀했다. ▲인구: 4천600만

Desperately seeking second round
Korea Republic's record at the FIFA World Cup™ is something of a mixture. While, with their five appearances at the finals (2002 will be their sixth, and an Asian record fifth in a row) they far outrank all other continental rivals, the Koreans have yet to make the move up to global level, failing to win a single game in any of their appearances. It would be asking a lot of Guus Hiddink and his side to expect them to emulate the 1966 achievements of their northern cousins, who famously reached the quarter-finals, but the pressure is on the team at least to record their first win and reach the second round. Hiddink's appointment in January 2001 was seen as a final admission that the Koreans needed outside help to bridge the gap between themselves and the world's top sides - the Dutchman will be the first non-Korean to coach the national team at a FIFA World Cup finals. The former PSV Eindhoven coach has some talented players at his disposal, none more so than striker Seol Ki-Hyeon, who has developed well since moving to Belgium several seasons ago. Seol joined Belgian champions Anderlecht during the summer of 2001 from Royal Antwerp and is quickly becoming one of Hiddink's most reliable offensive weapons. While Seol is a new face on the scene, many of the side that failed once again in France 98 remain, with the ever-reliable Hong Myung-bo at the back, Yoo Sang-chul in the centre of midfield and Hwang Sun-hong working with Seol in attack.
