인종차별정책이 폐지된 92년에야 국제무대에 복귀해 2회 연속 월드컵
본선 진출에 성공한 아프리카의 신흥 강호.
96년 아프리카 최강을 가리는 네이션스컵대회에서 검은 대륙의 `양대산맥' 카메룬과 나이지리아를 따돌리고 우승 트로피를 품에 안았고 같은 대회에서 98년 준우승, 2000년 3위를 차지했다. 사상 첫 본선무대였던 98년 월드컵 조별리그에서는 덴마크, 사우디아라비아와 비기고도 우승국 프랑스에 0-3으로 패해 16강에 나가지 못했으나 아프리카의 탄력과 유럽의 기술이 혼합한 수준 높은 경기력을 선보여 주목을 끌었다. 2006년 월드컵 개최를 놓고 독일과 경쟁했고 최종예선을 앞두고 트로트 몰로토 감독이 미덥지 않자 포르투갈과 아랍에미리트연합 감독을 지낸 카를로스 케이로스(포르투갈)로 교체하는 등 축구에 대한 국가적인 관심 또한 대단하다. FIFA 랭킹은 34위로 올 1월에는 역대 최고인 19위에 오르기도 했다. 전력은 흑,백간 조화에 힘입은 기술과 조직력을 지녀 전체적으로 중량감이 있다는 평가다. '98월드컵 때까지만 해도 수비수 피시 등 백인 선수들이 팀에서 적지 않은 비중을 차지했지만 이제는 흑인이 `실력'을 앞세워 대세를 이루고 있다. 숀 바틀레트, 베네딕트 매카시, 필레몬 마싱가 등 유럽 빅리그에서 주전으로 활약중인 `삼각 편대'를 비롯한 주전 대부분이 흑인인 탓인지 아프리카 특유의 `탄력축구'의 모습을 띠고 있다. 이들 가운데 프랑스월드컵 사우디와의 경기에서 2골을 넣었고 지난해 네이션스컵에서 5골로 득점왕에 오른 바틀레트는 팀에서 가장 경험이 풍부한 아프리카축구의 기수다. ▲인구: 4천370만

Back where they belong
South Africa will celebrate a decade back in the international fold in 2002 when they participate in the FIFA World Cup™ finals in Korea and Japan, after the end of their long period of isolation because of the country's apartheid policies. In the last 10 years, the country has emerged as a strong power on the African continent and has already enjoyed a substantial period of time as the top ranked African nation on the FIFA World Rankings. South Africa also qualified for the last FIFA World Cup finals in France and were winners of the African Nations Cup finals in 1996, which they hosted. Last year, they narrowly lost to Germany in a hard-fought bid to win the right to host the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals. With more and more key players now competing in the leagues of Europe, 'Bafana Bafana' will be hoping to draw on that experience and do considerably better than the two draws and one defeat they recorded at France '98. Coach Carlos Queiroz, who took Portugal to the world under-20 championship title in 1991, is now in charge of a South African side who proved competent in the qualifiers. Players like Sibusiso Zuma, Delron Buckley, Siyabonga Nomvete and captain Shaun Bartlett are emerging as the new generation of potential match-winners for the country. South Africa's economic strength and strong corporate sponsorship interest in soccer means the country's football can afford to compete regularly with some of the leading teams in the world and there have been recent encounters against the likes of world champions France, Sweden, Denmark and Mexico.
