프랑스 식민통치에서 60년에 독립한 인구 1천만의 나라로 62년
FIFA에 가입한 뒤 이번에 처음 월드컵 본선무대를 밟았다.
뒤늦게 세계무대에서 나선 까닭에 이름을 알리지 못하다 유소년축구에 대한 투자를 발판삼아 강호로 성장할 기회를 잡게 됐다. 국민적 축구열기를 바탕으로 전국 160곳의 훈련센터를 통해 꿈나무를 발굴, 육성하면서 기반을 닦아온 세네갈의 노력은 지난해 아프리카네이션스컵 8강과 첫 월드컵 본선진출로 달콤한 결실을 봤다. FIFA랭킹은 67위이지만 A매치가 적어 의미를 둘 필요는 없다. 지난해 10월 프랑스인 브루노 메추 감독이 지휘봉을 잡아 스트라이커 엘 하지 디우프 등 유럽파를 중심으로 대표팀을 정비한 뒤 가파른 상승세를 탔다. 전력은 아시아 최강 일본과 한국보다 낫다는 평가. 올해 프랑스에서 일본과 가진 평가전에서 2-0으로 승리했고 한국과의 전주월드컵경기장 개장 경기에서도 디우프가 빠진 채 1.5군이 나서고도 1-0으로 이겨 잠재력을 확인했다. 최종예선 C조에서 최소실점한 데서 보듯 탄탄한 수비조직력이 최대 강점이고 골잡이 디우프, 앙리 카마라, 플레이메이커 카릴로우 파디가가 이끄는 공격진의 화력도 만만치 않다. 키플레이어는 두말할 나위 없이 프랑스 1부리그 랑스에서 뛰고 있는 국민적 영웅 디우프(20)다. 최종예선서 두차례 해트트릭에 이어 모로코전에서 결승골을 작렬, 본선행 불씨를 살리는 등 세네갈에서는 독보적 존재로 통한다. ▲인구: 998만

Africa's new kids on the block
Senegal are the surprise package from Africa for the 2002 FIFA World Cup™ and the only one of the five African representatives who have never been to the finals before. The Lions came through arguably the toughest group in the continental qualifiers and are promising they have the potential to create further upsets when they play in the finals in Japan and Korea. Senegal's qualification is a breath of fresh air for African soccer, with French coach Bruno Metsu building on a side whose foundations were laid by the veteran German trainer Peter Schnittger. Metsu says Senegal will bring a charm and charisma to the finals, plus intent to win. "We will be the Jamaica of this World Cup," said the French-born coach. The West Africans have ambitions of exceeding the achievement of the Caribbean island in France in 1998 and Senegal believe they are strong candidates for at least the second round of the tournament. The vast majority of the team are based in France, with other Senegalese internationals dotted around other European leagues in Austria, Greece, Portugal and Switzerland. They will rely mainly on a strong attack, led by 21-year-old El Hadji Diouf, who plays for Lens, and Khalilou Fadida, based at Auxerre and who almost elected to compete for Belgium before winning his first cap for Senegal in 2000. The wide play of Henri Camara is also key while Ferdinand Coly adds a measure of solidity in the defence. Qualifying for the FIFA World Cup has injected a new fever into football in Senegal, whose previous best footballing achievement was a semi-final berth at the 1990 African Cup of Nations, when the shrewd Frenchman Claude Le Roy was their coach. There were ecstatic celebrations throughout the country after Senegal made sure of going to the finals with president Abdoulaye Wade even cutting short a state visit in Europe to fly home and celebrate with the players and people.
