사상 처음으로 월드컵 본선에 진출한 발칸의 다크호스.
91년 유고연방에서 분리독립한 인구 200만의 소국이지만 이번 유럽예선에서 러시아에 이어 2위를 차지한 뒤 동구의 강호 루마니아와의 플레이오프에서도 승리하는 등 실력이 만만치 않다. 92년 국제축구연맹(FIFA)에 가입한 뒤 지난해 유럽선수권과 내년 월드컵 본선에 잇따라 오르는 잠재력을 갖고 있다. '98프랑스월드컵 직후 스레츠코 카타네치 감독이 지휘봉을 잡은 이후 전력이 상승세를 타더니 유럽선수권 본선에 진출하는 이변을 연출했다. 유로 2000에서는 조별리그 첫 경기에 유고를 맞아 3-0으로 앞서다 내리 3골을 내준 탓에 2무1패로 탈락했지만 이번 유럽예선에서 유고를 밀어내고 2위로 플레이오프에 올랐다. 대표팀 주축이 벨기에, 잉글랜드, 독일 등지에서 뛰고 있다 슬로베니아축구의 강점은 선수들의 강인한 체력과 빠른 스피드를 앞세운 동유럽 특유의 역습 능력에 있다. 최고 스타는 A매치 60경기에 출장해 30골을 잡아낸 즈라트코 자호비치. 유로 2000을 통해 일약 세계적 스타로 떠오른 자호비치는 포르투갈 벤피카 소속의 플레이메이커로, 넓은 시야와 현란한 드리블, 정확한 패스가 일품이다. 유럽예선에서도 고비마다 4골을 뽑아내 슬로베니아의 첫 본선행에 일등공신이 됐다. ▲인구= 192만

Slovenia continue to impress under Katanec
Once again this remarkable nation of only 2 million inhabitants, which
was part of Yugoslavia until 1991, has defied the odds, this time by qualifying
for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™.
Such has been Slovenia's rise to prominence under Katanec that by the end of the qualifying campaign, they had risen to 26th in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World rankings, an improvement of over 100 places from when the ranking system was introduced in 1993.
