90년 이탈리아대회부터 4회 연속 본선무대에 얼굴을 내밀며 이 지역에서
떠오르는 축구 강국.
50년 브라질대회 이후 40년만에 본선에 오른 뒤 안방서 열린 94년 대회에서는 유고 출신의 명장 보라 밀루티노비치의 용병술을 앞세워 16강에 진출했고 98년에도 본선에 올라 잠재력을 과시했다. 7번이나 월드컵 본선에 올랐고 30년 제1회 우루과이대회에서는 3위를 차지했다. 축구가 여전히 국내 4대 메이저 종목의 벽을 넘지 못한 채 변방에 머물고 있지만 월드컵 8강을 목표로 한 지속적인 투자와 99년 여자월드컵 제패에 힘입어 성장세가 멈추지 않고 있다. 일본이 한국을 추월한 것처럼 현재 전력은 라이벌 멕시코보다 낫다는 평가가 지배적이다. 사령탑은 '98프랑스월드컵 후 스티브 샘슨으로부터 지휘봉을 넘겨받은 브루스 아레나로, 99년 컨페드컵에서 미국을 3위에 올려놓으며 지도력을 인정받았다. 미국의 강점은 무엇보다 탄탄한 조직력에 있다. 밀루티노비치와 샘슨의 뒤를 이은 브루스 감독은 전임 감독들이 다져놓은 기본기에 조직력을 심어 전력을 한 단계 더 끌어올렸다. 자국리그(MLS) 멤버와 유럽파가 반반씩 구성됐고 주전과 후보의 기량차가 거의 없다는 점도 특징. 공격 투톱은 30대 베테랑 어니 스튜어트와 조 맥스 무어로, 이번 최종예선에서 미국이 기록한 11골 중 7골을 합작하며 3회 연속 본선행을 이끌었다. 미드필드는 A매치 142경기에 출전한 코비 존스가 지휘하고 있고 수비에서도 역시 센추리클럽에 가입한 백전노장 제프 아구스의 조율이 돋보인다. 미국은 12월9일 서귀포월드컵구장 개장을 기념해 한국대표팀과 평가전을 갖는다. ▲인구: 2억7천500만

Ambitious outsiders
After their last place finish in the 1998 FIFA World Cup™, the United States needed an infusion of youth. The country turned to Manager Bruce Arena, the most successful coach in the US soccer. Arena has won everything from college to MLS titles and even earned a cap for the USA as a goalkeeper. Arena started to bring in players from all over the world, and since taking over the managerial reins has given over 20 players their first cap. The team can alternate between a 4-4-2 and a 3-5-2 formation, depending on their opponent, but with a flagrant lack of speed in the back line it is becoming more apparent that the USA will need to stick to a flat back four. The team has traditionally been strong defensively, bolstered by two proficient goalkeepers in Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel, and to complement this, the red, white, and blue has finally found some consistent midfield and forward play. This improvement is in no small way due to midfielder and captain Claudio Reyna and winger Earnie Stewart - the US' leading scorer in the qualifiers with eight goals. Both ply their trade in Europe, Reyna with Glasgow Rangers and Stewart with Netherlands outfit NAC Breda. ying for the USA with 9 goals. Significant past players:
