2006년 7월 8일 (한국시각 9일 새벽) 슈투트가르트의 고트리브 다이믈러 슈타디온에서 벌어진 2006 FIFA 월드컵 3,4위 결정전에서 대회 개최국 독일이 포르투갈에게 3-1 승리를 거두었다. 

결승 진출에 실패한 양 팀이었지만 모두 마지막 경기를 승리로 장식하기 위해 애쓴 경기였다. 후반 초반까지 팽팽하던 경기는 56분 바스티안 슈바인슈타이거가 선제골을 터뜨리며 균형이 깨졌다. 5분 후에는 바스티안 슈바인슈타이거의 프리킥이 수비하고 있던 프티의 발에 맞고 다시 한 번 골문을 흔들어 경기 분위기는 독일 쪽으로 기울기 시작했다. 

바스티안 슈바인슈타이거는 78분에 독일의 세 번째 골을 성공시키며 독일의 승리에 쐐기를 박았다. 포르투갈은 88분 누누 고메스가 골을 성공시켰지만 경기를 뒤집기에는 시간이 모자랐다. 이로써 독일은 2006 FIFA 월드컵 3위 자리를 차지하게 되었고, 포르투갈은 4위를 기록하게 되었다. 

오늘 경기에서는 옌스 레만에게 주전 자리를 내주고 독일의 후보 골키퍼로 물러나 있던 올리버 칸이 이번 대회 최초로 골키퍼로 나서 독일 골문을 지켰다. 한편, 이번 대회에서 다섯 골을 기록하고 있어 아디다스 골든 슈 수상이 유력시되는 미로슬라프 클로제는 65분에 교체될 때까지 골을 추가하지 못했다. 

경기: 
5분: 이 경기에서 첫 번째 득점 기회를 잡은 것은 개최국 독일이었다. 베른트 슈나이더가 우측에서 올린 프리킥을 크리스토프 메첼더가 헤딩으로 제바스티안 켈에게 연결했고, 켈의 슈팅은 아쉽게 골문을 빗나갔다. 

8분: 바스티안 슈바인스타이거가 미로슬라프 클로제에게 깔끔한 스루패스를 연결했지만 스트라이커 클로제가 오른발로 슈팅한 공은 옆그물을 맞고 말았다. 

15분: 시망 사브로자의 패스를 받은 파울레타는 이번 대회 들어 처음 출전한 올리버 칸 골키퍼만 제치면 되는 좋은 기회를 맞았으나, 포르투갈의 스트라이커 파울레타가 날린 슈팅은 칸 골키퍼의 정면을 향했다. 

20분: 히카르두 골키퍼는 켈이 18미터 거리에서 시도한 슈팅을 뛰어난 선방을 펼치며 위로 쳐내는 데 성공했다. 

25분: 이번 대회 질레트 최우수 신인선수상을 수상한 루카스 포돌스키가 강력한 왼발로 강하게 슈팅을 날렸지만 히카르두 골키퍼의 손에 맞았다. 

31분: 골문 앞에서 위치를 선점한 데쿠는 돌아서 슈팅을 할 수 있는 시간과 공간을 확보했지만 독일 수비의 선전에 힘입어 공은 골대 위로 날아갔다. 

36분: 시망 사브로자는 데쿠가 올린 코너킥을 받아 칸 골키퍼가 지키는 골문 안으로 슈팅을 시도했으나 아쉽게도 빗나가고 말았다. 

골 폭발 
51분: 후반전이 시작되면서 양 팀 모두 결정적인 기회를 만들기 위해 고심했다. 약 22미터 거리에서 얻은 포르투갈의 프리킥 기회에서 시망이 직접 슈팅을 날렸으나 골대를 훌쩍 넘어갔다. 
 
56분: 왼쪽 측면에서 중앙쪽으로 들어오던 바스티안 슈바인슈타이거가 오른발로 강하게 날린 슈팅이 히카르두 골키퍼를 속였다. 슈바인슈타이거의 발은 떠난 공은 골키퍼의 팔을 지나 골네트를 가르면서 독일에게 선취점을 안겼다. (1-0). 

60분: 왼쪽에서 올린 클로제의 크로스가 수비수인 필리프 람에게 연결되었다. 그는 바로 슈팅으로 연결했으나 공은 골문을 넘어가고 말았다. 

61분: 프리킥 상황에서 슈바인슈타이거가 찬 공이 불행하게도 포르투갈의 프티에 의해 굴절되면서 또다시 포르투갈의 골문을 열었다. 자책골이 기록되면서 경기장을 찾은 대다수의 독일 팬들은 기뻐했고 포르투갈 팬들은 풀이 죽었다. (2-0). 

63분: 반대편 골문에서는 데쿠가 슈팅을 날렸으나 올리퍼 칸 골키퍼의 선방에 막히면서 코너킥을 얻는데 그쳤다. 

78분: 교체 투입된 루이스 피구는 경기에 나서자마자 좋은 기회를 만들어 낸다. 그는 호날두에게 좋은 기회를 제공해 주었으나 호날두의 슈팅은 칸 골키퍼 정면으로 향했다. 반대편 골문에서는 슈바인슈타이거가 마치 그의 첫 골을 재현이라도 하듯 독일의 세 번째 골을 성공시켰다. 그의 강력한 슈팅은 히카르두 골키퍼가 막아내기에는 역부족이었다. (3-0). 
 
82분: 왼쪽에서 올린 시망의 크로스가 크리스토프 메첼더의 자책골로 이어질 뻔했으나 끝내 공은 골라인을 넘지 못했다. 같은 시간대에 포르투갈의 호날두에게 프리킥 상황이 주어졌다. 날카롭게 휘어들어간 호날두의 슈팅은 칸 골키퍼를 속이는 것처럼 보였으나 결국은 칸이 잘 막아냈다. 

88분: 루이스 피구가 골문을 향해 정확한 크로스를 올려주며 결정적인 기회를 만들었고 이를 누누 고메스가 멋진 헤딩골로 연결시켰다. 이 골로 포르투갈은 마지막 자존심을 지킬 수 있었다. (3-1). 

결론 : 후반전에 슈바인슈타이거를 필두로 한 독일의 멋진 플레이가 경기에 활력을 불어 넣었고 결국 개최국이 3위 자리를 차지했다. 지난 1990년 이탈리아 월드컵에서 우승을 차지하고 지난 대회에서는 준우승을 차지했던 독일은 또다시 월드컵 무대에서 좋은 성적을 거두었다. 
 
한편 포르투갈은 40년 전 3위를 차지했던 영광을 재현하는 데에는 아쉽게도 실패했다. 하지만 피구는 그의 마지막 국제 경기에서 다시 한번 마술 같은 플레이를 보여주며 건재함을 과시했다. 그의 정확한 크로스는 누누 고메스가 헤딩으로 골로 연결시키는데 결정적인 어시스트가 되었다. - FIFAworldcup.com 2006년 07월 8일 
 
 
 
 

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) - Fireworks thundered and flashbulbs popped all around the darkened stadium, illuminating the German players' brilliant white shirts and the thousands of flags that waved in their honor. Fans screamed and sang for an hour afterward, savoring the lingering moments as hosts of the World Cup.

And that was after the consolation game.
Germany took third place Saturday in the World Cup, beating Portugal 3-1 on two sensational goals by Bastian Schweinsteiger. He also set up the third, when his free kick was deflected in for an own-goal by Portugal's Armando Petit.

"We wanted to give our best to our fans," German coach Juergen Klinsmann said. "It's a phenomenal end to our tournament."

It was also a far cry from playing in Sunday's final in Berlin, an honor that belongs to France and Italy. But at least it gave the home fans one last chance to party, and they embraced the opportunity, locking arms, waving flags and serenading their national heroes as they circled the field at Gottlieb-Daimler stadium.

Imagine the mayhem if Germany had made the final and played this well.

"It's very difficult to sum up the game because it was very emotional for us," Klinsmann said.

The once-controversial coach turned a Teutonic defending style into creative, attacking soccer, winning over German fans and media along the way as his team advanced. The only nagging question now is whether Klinsmann, who lives in California, stays with the national team.

Even the tabloid Bild, his biggest critic a month ago, is leading a write-in campaign to keep him. The newspaper Berliner Kurier carried the headline: "Klinsi, please stay."

Klinsmann, for his part, remained noncommittal.

"I need some days to think about it," he said.

Schweinsteiger's two goals were almost identical, and they energized the game - just as Germany has done for the country's national pride.

In the 56th, he retreated from the corner of the penalty area on the left side and worked to the middle of the field. From 25 yards he launched the ball without rotation, a frozen blast beyond the reach of a leaping goalkeeper Ricardo.

Six minutes later, the midfielder, who didn't start in the 2-0 loss to Italy in the semifinals, set up the own-goal as Petit deflected his free kick behind Ricardo.

In the 78th, Schweinsteiger again sent a rising shot sailing over Ricardo's hands. With that he yanked off his shirt, drawing applause from the sellout crowd that included seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher. It also drew a yellow card - a meaningless booking now.

"I'd like to have played the final, but we weren't thinking about it," said the Bayern Munich midfielder, who just finished a sub-par club season.

Added Klinsmann: "We won't be sleeping tonight. We wanted this third place. I'm very proud of what the team delivered. We played with a lot of heart."

The Germans have won the World Cup three times, and they are always a threat. They've reached the semifinals a record 11 times, and this is their third consolation prize.

Portugal failed to match its best World Cup, falling just short of the third-place finish in 1966. Eusebio, a member of that 1966 team, was on the bench - but couldn't rally a victory.

"I feel satisfied and glad with the way things have turned out overall," said Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who won the World Cup four years ago with his native Brazil. He was trying to become the first to win it with two different countries.

"At the end, even by ending on a loss, we're still one of the best four teams in the world. That's a sort of title for us."

The game marked the end of the international careers of 37-year-old German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and 33-year-old Portugal winger Luis Figo.

Kahn played the entire game, his only action in this World Cup. Once the face of the national team, Kahn came into this tournament as a backup to Jens Lehmann, but got the nod for this game with Lehmann's blessing.

"It was a beautiful time, but you have to know when it's over," said Kahn, who led Germany to the 2002 final but then blundered in the championship loss to Brazil.

Figo came on as a substitute but had started every game before this one. He's made 127 appearances for Portugal over 15 years and seemed displeased that Scolari didn't start him in this game.

"It's hard to go out like this," he said.

Germany made five changes from the team that lost 2-0 to Italy, including captain Michael Ballack missing with a knee injury. Portugal made three from the side that fell to 1-0 to France.

Pauleta, Portugal's all-time leading scorer who is the same age as Figo, also said it was time for him to bow out.

"Everything has a beginning and an end," the striker said. "This is my end."
