포르투갈이 격전 끝에 네덜란드를 1-0으로 물리치고 8강 대열에 합류했다. 
 
현지시각으로 6월 25일 일요일 오후 9시 뉘른베르크 프랑켄 슈타디온에서 펼쳐진 포르투갈 대 네덜란드의 16강전은 그야말로 치열한 승부였다. 양 팀에서 각기 2명씩 퇴장 당했고 총 16회의 경고가 나왔다. 23분 포르투갈의 마니시가 선취점을 올린 후, 46분 코스티냐(포르투갈)를 시작으로 63분 칼리트 불라루즈(네덜란드), 78분 데쿠(포르투갈), 95분 히오바니 판 브롱크호르스트(네덜란드)가 차례로 그라운드 밖으로 나가야 했다. 

마니시의 한 골을 끝까지 잘 지킨 포르투갈은 7월 1일 토요일 겔젠키르헨에서 잉글랜드를 상대로 8강전을 치른다. 

경기:  
1분: 네덜란드는 경기가 시작하자마자 제 기량을 선보였고 마르크 판 보멀이 뤼트 판 니스텔로이 대신 투입된 디르크 카윗의 패스를 받아 영리한 슛을 쏘았으나 히카르두 골키퍼가 지키던 골문을 살짝 빗겨 나갔다. 

14분: 네덜란드가 전반 10분만에 2개(판 보멀, 칼리트 불라루즈)의 경고를 받는 등 경기는 빠른 속도로 거친 체력전의 양상을 보였다. 그러나 '오렌지 군단'은 옐로 카드의 숫자만큼이나 골 찬스에서도 앞서 나갔다. 아스날의 인기 스타 로빈 판 페르시의 날카로운 슈팅은 골대를 한참 벗어났으나 히카르두는 방어에 고전했다. 

23분: 네덜란드는 그 많은 기회에도 불구하고 선취골을 내주고 만다. 포르투갈이 처음 만들어 낸 공격 기회에서 데쿠는 우측에서 파울레타를 겨냥한 위협적인 크로스를 올렸고, 파울레타는 곧장 마니시에 이어주었다. 첼시 소속의 마니시는 좁은 공간에서 에드윈 판 데르 사르가 지키던 골문의 위쪽 코너로 강력한 오른발 슛을 작렬했다. (1-0) 

33분: 선취골 이후 포르투갈의 플레이가 살아났고, 날아다니는 공격수들은 화려한 공격 축구를 구사했다. 포르투갈은 네덜란드를 상대로 우위를 이어나가고자 했으나 경기 초반 허벅지 부상을 입었던 크리스티아누 호날두는 경기장을 떠나게 된다. 맨체스터 유나이티드 소속의 스타 플레이어 호날두가 이 경기에 대해 품었던 열정은 눈물로 표출됐다. 교체 투입된 선수는 시망 사브로자. 

37분: 네덜란드도 수 차례 좋은 공격을 펼치며 반격했고, 반 페르시는 포르투갈 문전에서 활기 넘치는 드리블을 하다 강슛을 날렸지만 골대 위로 날아갔다. 
 
45분: 휴식시간이 가까워지며 포르투갈의 파울레타가 근거리 공격을 시도하며 승세를 굳힐 수 있는 좋은 기회를 만들었으나 판 데르 사르 골키퍼의 멋진 선방에 무위로 돌아갔다. 잠시 후, 코스티냐가 고의적인 핸드볼 반칙으로 두 번째 옐로카드를 받고 퇴장 당해 포르투갈의 인원은 10명으로 줄었다. 

몸싸움이 거칠었던 혈전 

49분: 전반전 시작과 비슷하게 네덜란드는 후반전 초반 활기 있게 시작했다. 골문 근처에서 판 보멀의 환상적인 바이시클 킥이 빗나갔고 튀어 나온 공은 노장 미드필더 필립 코퀴 앞에 떨어졌다. 골문 9미터 전방에서 슛을 날렸지만 크로스바에 맞고 나왔다. 

50분: 체력이 고갈된 상대팀의 압박을 받던 판 보멀이 18미터 거리에서 회심의 슛을 날렸지만 허둥대던 히카르두에 막혀 다시 한 번 위기를 모면했다. 

57분: 루이스 피구가 오른쪽에서 찔러준 공을 받은 마니시는 거의 두 번째 골을 넣을 뻔 했지만 판 데르 사르의 선방에 막히고 말았다. 
 
63분: 경기는 거친 몸싸움으로 인해 과열되고 있었다. 루이스 피구를 팔꿈치로 가격한 불라루즈는 두 번째 옐로우 카드를 받고 퇴장했고 두 팀은 10명이 되었다. 

78분: 바르셀로나 소속 미드필더 데코가 시간을 끌려는 시도로 두 번째 옐로우 카드를 받고 퇴장 당했다. 

90+ 네덜란드의 판 브롱크호르스트가 경기 직전 두 번째 경고를 받으면서 퇴장 당했고 경기장에 남은 선수는 양 팀 모두 9명이었다. 결국 포르투갈이 네덜란드의 맹공을 따돌리고 승리를 차지했다. 

결론: 
네덜란드는 짐을 꾸리는 신세가 되었고 포르투갈은 사상 두 번째로 준준결승에 진출하여 잉글랜드를 상대하게 되었다. 양 팀은 1966년 준결승에서 만난 적이 있으며 당시 개최국 잉글랜드가 승리한 후 FIFA 월드컵 우승을 차지했다.

NUREMBERG, Germany (AP) - Portugal survived a brutal foul-fest with the Netherlands, one of the dirtiest matches in World Cup history. Cleats bashed into thighs and shoulders, heads butted and elbows flew. 

Players faked injuries, complained and brawled. 
 
Every bit as ugly: the blaming and finger-pointing that came after Portugal's 1-0 win Sunday, a victory that cost it two starters for its upcoming quarterfinal match with England. 

"FIFA talks about fair play," Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said. "There was no fair play." 

The Dutch coach, Marco Van Basten, shot back: 

"If you talk about fair play, you should watch yourself first," adding that the Portuguese needed the shenanigans to beat his young team. 

"They were a bit more experienced with all these tricks and all this time wasting," he said. 

But when it came to expulsions, the sides were level at 2-2. That raised the number of red cards in this tournament - whose motto is "A time to make friends" - to 23, already a World Cup record after 52 matches with 12 to go. 

It also means the Portuguese face England minus Deco and Costinha, two key starters who were ejected amid the pushing, shoving and theatrics that left both teams with nine men by the end. 

Portugal also lost Cristiano Ronaldo, a creative attacker, who came off with a leg injury from a second harsh foul. His status was still uncertain. 

"Cristiano has five, six days to recover. We hope he will recover," said Scolari, who extended his World Cup record mark to 11 straight victories amid the chaos. The Brazilian led his home country to the 2002 title. 

The 16 yellow cards Sunday tied a World Cup match record, with nine for Portugal and seven for the Netherlands. 

But the difference in the game was a beautiful goal by Maniche in the 23rd minute that came off a quick threat on the edge of the area. Pauleta touched the ball to Maniche, who skipped inside a defender and shot right-footed past goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from 16 yards. 

After that, the bile began to rise, and the best the Dutch could do in reply was send cross after cross. Veteran midfielder Phillip Cocu sent a volley crashing on the bar and out again in the 48th minute. 

"It is sad there was so little soccer played in the second half," said Van Basten. 

With star striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy sidelined for tactical reasons, his replacement Dirk Kuyt came close twice, but not close enough. 

"We didn't have the luck to score goals," said Van Basten, who lost his first competitive game since taking the job after the Netherlands lost to a Maniche goal in the semifinals of Euro 2004. 

"Our missed opportunities, that made the difference," said Van der Sar. 

The Netherlands also lost two players to red cards from Russian referee Valentin Ivanov - Khalid Boulahrouz and Giovanni van Bronckhorst. In the end, the one thing both sides could agree on was blaming Ivanov. 

"It is a pity the referee made a mess of this game," van Basten said. 

Amid the expulsions, the Portuguese held together better than the Dutch. 

"From the start of the tournament our great strength has resided in our unity and the great support of the whole country," said Figo. 

In two minutes before halftime, the game could have turned. 

First, Van der Sar produced a stunning save on a point-blank shot from Pauleta in the goalmouth. Moments later, Costinha inexplicably handled a simple through pass for his second yellow card. 

It set up a thrilling second half, with an outmanned Portugal facing a Dutch team still looking for its touch. 

In the 63rd, however, Boulahrouz elbowed the irrepressible Figo on another run, earning his second yellow card. 

Deco later lost his poise and first made a wild tackle on defender John Heitinga and followed it up with childish timewasting in the 76th minute to be sent off by referee Valentin Ivanov. 

In injury time, Van Bronckhorst was sent off for a second yellow card, making it nine-on-nine for the final seconds. The Barcelona teammates sat together in the dugout to watch the finale. 

'퇴장만 4명, 경고는 16회. 후반 인저리타임은 무려 6분…'26일 오전(이하 한국시간) 뉘른베르크 월드컵경기장에서 열린 포르투갈과 네덜란드의 2006 독일 월드컵 16강전은 경고와 퇴장이 난무한 상처로 얼룩진 경기였다. 

이날 경기에서는 포르투갈 9개, 네덜란드 7개 등 이번 대회 최다인 모두 16차례의 옐로카드가 쏟아졌다. 이 중 전반 46분 코스티냐(포르투갈)를 시작으로, 후반 18분 칼리트 불라루즈(네덜란드), 33분 데쿠(포르투갈), 인저리타임이 적용되던 후반 50분 히오바니 판 브롱크호르스트(네덜란드) 등이 줄줄이 경고 누적으로 레드 카드를 받았다. 

이미 한 차례씩 경고가 있었던 포르투갈 코스티냐는 네덜란드의 안드레 오이여르의 패스에 오른손을 갖다대 막았고, 네덜란드 불라루즈는 측면을 침투하던 루이스 피구의 안면을 팔꿈치로 때렸다. 

포르투갈 데쿠는 프리킥이 선언되자 공을 들고 시간을 지연하다 그라운드에서 쫓겨 났고, 네덜란드 판 브롱크호르스트는 경기 종료 직전 티아구에 반칙을 범해 불명예를 안았다. 

과거 월드컵에서 1938년 브라질-체코슬로바키아전, 1954년 브라질-헝가리전, 1998년 덴마크-남아프리카공화국전 등에서 한 경기에 세 명이 퇴장당한 적은 있지만 4명이나 레드카드를 받은 것은 이번이 처음이다. 

반칙은 포르투갈이 10개, 네덜란드가 15개를 범했다. 

반칙과 경고, 퇴장이 속출하다 보니 경기 흐름이 계속 끊어져 후반전 인저리타임은 무려 6분이 주어졌다. 발렌틴 이바노프(러시아) 주심은 주머니에서 카드를 꺼냈다 집어넣다 하느라 정신이 없었다. 

반칙이 일어날 때 마다 양팀 선수들은 몸싸움 일보직전까지 갖고 양 팀 벤치에서도 선수들이 모두 일어나 금방이라도 뛰어들 태세를 하며 험악한 분위기기 이어졌다. 

후반 14분 포르투갈 피구는 네덜란드의 판 브롱크호르스트가 동료 데쿠에게 반칙을 하자 마르크 반 보멀의 머리를 살짝 들이받는 모습이 카메라에 잡혔다. 

후반 28분에는 네덜란드 욘 헤이팅아가 포르투갈 데쿠의 거친 백태클로 그라운드에 나뒹굴자 스네이더르가 몰려 있던 포르투갈 선수들을 거칠게 밀어붙이며 한판 주먹 대결이라도 벌일 것 같았다. 

포르투갈에 역대 전적에서 1승3무5패의 열세에 놓여 자존심이 상해 있던 네덜란드는 수적 우위를 점하고 역전극을 펼칠 수 있었음에도 결국 감정 싸움에 휘말려 상대 전적에서 1패를 추가했다. 물론 월드컵 8강 티켓도 내줬다. 

상처는 포르투갈도 마찬가지다. 비록 8강엔 올랐지만 잉글랜드와 4강 티켓 전쟁에는 주전 데쿠와 코스티냐가 출전하지 못한다. (연합뉴스)
