2006년 6월 27일(한국시각 28일) 하노버 FIFA 월드컵 경기장에서 열린 스페인과 프랑스의 16강전은 후반 막판에 터진 파트리크 비에라와 지네딘 지단의 골에 힘입어 프랑스가 1-3 승리를 거두었다. 

스페인은 28분경 다비드 비야의 페널티킥으로 선취점을 올렸으나, 41분에 프랑크 리베리에게 동점골을 허용했다. 후반 종료를 얼마 남기지 않은 시각, 양 팀의 팽팽한 균형을 깨뜨린 것은 프랑스였다. 프랑스는 83분 파트리크 비에라의 헤딩슛으로 골망을 흔들고, 추가 시간에는 지네딘 지단이 승부를 확정짓는 쐐기골까지 추가하면서 그동안의 부진을 씻어내는 1-3의 기분 좋은 승리를 거두었다. 

오늘 승리로 8강에 오른 프랑스는 7월 1일(한국시각 2일 새벽), 프랑크푸르트에서 브라질과 준준결승전을 치르게 된다. 

경기: 
레몽 도메네크 감독은 경고 누적으로 마지막 조별 경기인 토고전에 뛰지 못했던 지네딘 지단을 다시 선발로 기용했다. 하지만 스페인 주장 라울이 선발로 나선 게 오히려 의외였다. 루이스 아라고네스 감독은 미드필드에 신예 세스크 파브레가스를 내세우며 공격적인 포메이션을 선택했다. 

9분: 양 팀 간 끈질긴 탐색전이 계속됐다. 마리아노 페르니아가 22m 거리에서 프리킥으로 첫 슈팅을 날려봤지만 골대와는 거리가 멀었다. 

11분: 아스날과 바르셀로나 간의 UEFA 챔피언스리그 결승에서 푸욜을 괴롭혔던 티에리 앙리가 자신이 좋아하는 위치인 왼쪽 측면으로 치고 들어가다 슈팅을 시도했으나 이케르 카시야스가 선방했다. 

23분: 프랑스가 공 점유율 면에서 우세를 보이는 가운데 발 빠른 움직임으로 전방으로 파고 들었다. 지단의 패스를 받은 앙리가 프랑크 리베리와 파트리크 비에라가 쇄도하는 문전으로 위력적인 크로스를 올렸으나 수비수가 먼저 걷어냈다. 
 
28분: 선취점을 기록한 건 스페인이었다. 릴리앙 튀랑이 페널티 에어리어에서 파블로에게 반칙을 범해 페널티킥을 내줬다. 다비드 비야의 페널티킥은 파비앵 바르테즈가 미처 손 쓸 새도 없이 골대 모서리로 낮고 강하고 빨려 들어갔다. 이로서 비야는 개인 통산 세 골을 기록했고 스페인은 월드컵에서 14경기 연속 득점에 성공했다. 1-0 

41분: 스페인이 선취점을 지킨 채 전반을 끝내는 듯 보였지만 프랑스가 멋진 전술로 승부를 원점으로 돌렸다. 리베리가 스페인의 미드필드 진영에서 공을 잡은 후 비에라와 패스를 주고 받다 이케르 카시야스를 따돌리고 동점골을 터뜨렸다. 1-1 

호각세: 
전반전의 접전과는 달리, 미드필드의 혼전과 수비 진영 유지로 경기의 흐름이 눈에 띄게 느려졌다. 

52분: 먼저 프랑스가 스페인의 수비 진영을 무너뜨렸다. 지단의 정교한 패스를 리옹의 미드필더 플로랑 말루다가 로빙슛으로 마무리하려 했으나 카시야스의 선방에 막혔다. 

60분: 교체 투입된 호아킨이 크로스로 상대 수비를 교란시켰지만 두 팀 모두 기회는 좀처럼 찾아오지 않았다. 

77분: 호아킨이 문전 오른쪽에서 수비를 따돌리고 왼발 슈팅을 감아찼지만 공은 가까운 쪽 골대를 비켜갔다. 

81분: 반면에, 리베리의 좋은 슈팅에 이어 교체해 들어온 시드니 고부가 18m짜리 중거리 슈팅을 노려봤으나 위로 뜨고 말았다. 
 
83분: 연장으로 이어질 듯 하면 분위기가 프랑스의 킬러 본능에 의해 깨졌다. 푸욜이 앙리를 저지하려다 저지른 반칙으로 얻은 프리킥을 지단이 문전으로 올려줬다. 그러자 골대 앞에 자리를 잡고 있던 비에라가 강하게 헤딩한 공이 세르효 라모스의 다리를 맞고 굴절되어 그대로 골대 모서리로 파고 들었고 프랑스 선수와 팬들은 하나가 되어 열광했다. 1-2 

90분: 스페인은 동점골을 위해 총공세를 펼쳤지만 레 블뢰의 수비진은 견고했다. 

90+2분: 프랑스가 반격에 나섰다. 왼쪽에서 공을 잡은 지단이 푸욜을 제치고 문전으로 쇄도하면서 멋진 쐐기골을 터뜨리며 3-1로 점수를 벌렸다. 1-3 

결론: 
혹평에 항변이라도 하듯이 프랑스는 모든 면에서 훌륭한 경기력을 발휘하며 브라질과 준결승 진출을 놓고 다투게 됐다. 조별 경기에서 막강한 화력을 보이던 스페인은 전반전 중반까지 선취점을 지켰지만 국제 대회에 약한 면모를 다시 한 번 드러내며 씁쓸하게 고국행 비행기에 오르게 됐다. (FIFAworldcup.com 2006년 06월 27일) 
 
프랑스 3-1 스페인 
 
`늙은 수탉'이라고 조롱받던 프랑스가 `아트사커'의 부활을 알렸다. 

기선은 스페인이 잡았다. 전반 27분 상대 페널티지역에서 파블로가 릴리앙 튀랑의 발에 걸려 넘어지며 페널티킥이 선언됐고 키커로 나선 다비드 비야는  오른발로 상대 왼쪽 골문 구석을 향해 낮게 슛을 날렸다. 

프랑스 골키퍼  파비앵  바르테즈가 미리 방향을 읽고 몸을 날렸지만 워낙 구석으로 빨려 들어가 손을 쓸 수가  없었다. 

프랑스의 반격은 곧 시작됐고 전반이 끝나기 전 바로 균형을 맞췄다. 

전반 41분 상대 미드필드에서 비에라와 패스를 주고 받은 리베리가 골키퍼와 일대일 상황에서 가볍게 카시야스를 제치고 페널티지역 왼쪽에서 왼발로 빈 골문에 차 넣었다. 

승부가 갈린 건 후반 38분이었다. 지단이 상대 미드필더 진영 오른쪽에서  프리킥을 차올렸고, 스페인 수비수가 헤딩으로 걷어낸 게 골문 왼쪽에 있던  비에라에게 연결됐다. 비에리는 기다렸다는 듯이 머리로 꽂아넣었다. 

지단은 후반 인저리타임 비에라의 패스를 받아 페널티 지역 정면에서 상대 수비수 카를로스 푸욜을 제치고 오른발슛으로 승부에 쐐기를 박았다. 

세대 교체를 단행하며 월드컵 최고의 성적을 노렸던 스페인은 이번 대회에서도 '큰 경기에 약하다'는 징크스를 떨쳐 내지 못했다.  (연합뉴스) 
 
 

HANOVER, Germany (AP) - French fans had not celebrated with such abandon in a World Cup stadium since 1998. Then again, Zinedine Zidane had not played a game like this one in eight years. 

They're not ready to throw his retirement party just yet. 
The French captain set up the deciding goal on Tuesday night, then scored one of his own minutes later to lead France to a 3-1 win over hard-luck Spain. 

Zidane, who is retiring after this World Cup, scored two goals in the 1998 final to beat Brazil. He will get one more shot at the tournament favorite when the two teams face off in Saturday's quarterfinal. 

Instead of the washed-up team that looked ready for retirement as recently as last week, France is suddenly two matches away from a return to the World Cup final. 

After the game, Zidane's smile was as genial as ever before, the twinkle in his eyes as sparkling. Only the ruddy crow's feet around his eyes showed that eight years had passed since France's last title. 

"The adventure continues," he said. "We didn't want it to stop." 

During the match, it was hard to tell whether it was 1998 or 2006. 

Zidane took the free kick in the 83rd minute that curled into the goalmouth and found an onrushing Patrick Vieira, who headed it off the body of Spain's Sergio Ramos and into the net to break a 1-1 deadlock. 

Zidane then finished off his brilliant night with a solo run into the penalty area, his golden shoes flashing as he cut inside one defender before wrongfooting goalie Iker Casillas for a goal of his own. 

At 34, and with each World Cup match possibly his last, that is something. 

"He kept going - for the whole match," said France coach Raymond Domenech. 

Even in the dying moments, when younger players were exhausted, Zidane was heading out crosses and rushing back with the abandon of a teenager to stop a Spanish attack. 

"You know what Zizou's influence can be," Domenech said. "We're happy for him that he's 34 and in the 90th minute he still had the legs to score, and if I could be any happier, that makes it special for me." 

And just like 1998, he remains the undisputed leader. 

"We feel as though a common cause has been born in the team," Zidane said. "We are very happy to be through to the quarterfinal." 

France won its title match with Brazil 3-0 on two Zidane goals. Its run in this World Cup seemed improbable just a week ago, when France was struggling to score and Zidane was suspended for too many yellow cards. 

For Spain, the agony continues. In 76 years of the World Cup, Spain has never finished better than fourth. 

After an excellent first round, this was supposed to be the year. 

"We were all convinced that this would be the World Cup when would make it," said veteran striker Raul Gonzalez. "But the moment of truth was today. And yet again we're disappointed." 

Spain got its hopes up in the 28th minute, when Lilian Thuram stepped on the foot of Pablo Ibanez in the area, prompting referee Christiano Copelli to award a penalty kick. David Villa slotted it perfectly, low in the left corner and just out of reach of Fabien Barthez. 

The game turned when France got its equalizing goal in the 41st minute. Vieira sent speedy Franck Ribery into open space with a pass, and the Marseille winger swept the ball past goalkeeper Iker Casillas with his right foot and sent it home with his left, just ahead of two onrushing defenders. 

At the end of the game, France's "old men" - Zidane, Vieira and Barthez - were all embracing and saluting the ecstatic tricolor fans among the 43,000 sellout crowd. 

"We are still far from winning the cup but that's our target," Vieira said. "We know that we can achieve a lot and we'll keep working hard. Many people didn't expect us to win today but we proved them wrong." 

He said the team was already looking forward to Brazil. 

"We have an exceptional game ahead of us," Domenech said. "As the players were saying in the locker room, it is for games like this that we live in the soccer world, for this kind of excitement." 

But France is intent now on going further. 

"Our only aim," Domenech said, "is to be there on July 9." 

That's the day of the World Cup final - and the last possible date for that Zidane retirement party.
