Brazil opens title defense with win over Croatia

[BRA] 8. KAKA (44')

BERLIN (AP) - Brazil opened its attempt for a record sixth World Cup title Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Croatia in Group F.

Kaka scored in the 44th minute with a 20-meter (yard) shot into the top right corner of the goal, turning the whistles of Brazil's previously frustrated fans into cheers and songs.

However, Brazil goalkeeper Dida made a string of saves at the soldout Olympic Stadium and striker Ronaldo was substituted after a below-par performance, suggesting the defending champions will have to improve if they are to reach the final on July 9.

The win still gave Brazil three points and confirmed its status as favorite to easily advance into the next round. Croatia, which reached the semifinals in 1998, must now get points from Japan and Australia to revive its chances.

Brazil had a bright start, hogging possession and relying on the defensive midfield pairing of Emerson and Ze Roberto to win the ball back when moves broke down. It faded midway through the first half under tough Croatian tackling and rarely convinced after.

While Brazil has a record five titles, Croatia is in just its second World Cup and the disparity in experience appeared to show early on. Still, Croatia largely limited Brazil to a handful of long-range shots, most from or prompted by fullbacks Roberto Carlos and captain Cafu.

Urged on by Croatia's vocal fans - who outnumbered their Brazilian counterparts in the 72,000 crowd - captain Niko Kovac initiated a handful of attacks before going off with what appeared to be a rib injury in the 40th.

Three minutes later, Cafu picked out Kaka on the edge of the area. The AC Milan playmaker took one touch to knock the ball past Niko Kranjcar and another to steady himself before placing a left-foot shot past Croatia goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa.

"I personally had a good start in the World Cup. I scored a goal, participated in several moves," Kaka said. "The second half was especially difficult, because we had trouble getting organized and suffered a lot on the left side."

Croatia continued to attack after halftime and could have forced a draw that would have left Australia - which beat Japan 2-1 on Monday - as the group's leader.

Brazil's next game is against Australia on June 18, when Croatia plays Japan.

Brazil had looked set for a bigger win in Tuesday's game, despite coach Carlos Alberto Parreira saying his team will take time to get up to speed at the tournament.

Roberto Carlos prompted several early attacks for Brazil and had the first effort with a shot wide of goal. He also had a fierce 35-meter (yard) shot palmed over by Pletikosa and, from the resulting corner, FIFA world player of the year Ronaldinho put in a shot that Pletikosa deflected wide.

Kovac almost burst through minutes later in a move that further roused Croatia's fans - almost all decked out in their team's red-and-white checks - who were outsinging, outchanting and outclapping their yellow-clad Brazilian counterparts.

Some Brazil fans started whistling midway through the first half at their team's lack of progress and Parreira took advantage of a break in play to call Ze Roberto and Adriano for a brief touchline meeting.

Although Croatia came closest next when Igor Tudor and Kovac narrowly failed to connect with a 39th-minute free kick from Darijo Srna, Parreira's words seemed to have worked when Kaka got the ball on the edge of the area.

The Brazil No. 8 went past Kranjcar - the coach's 21-year-old son playing in a more withdrawn position than usual - and placed his shot past Pletikosa.

Croatia, which failed to make the last tournament in South Korea and Japan, continued to attack after halftime. Dado Prso and Ivan Klasnic each had shots saved by Dida within eight minutes of the break.

Cafu set up another chance in the 62nd with a cross that the running Ronaldinho headed on goal, only to be thwarted by a diving stop from Pletikosa.

Parreira broke up his "magic quartet" of attackers in the 69th when he replaced Ronaldo to team Robinho with Ronaldinho, Kaka, and Adriano - who, with Juan, was one of only two Brazil starters playing in their first World Cup.

Ronaldo, who appeared sluggish and has been called overweight by some observers, barely figured in the game, putting one 25-meter (yard) shot over the bar in the 54th. He never came close to getting the 13th tournament goal that would put him one short of Gerd Muller's all-time record.

Croatia, however, came close to snatching at least a point when Brazil's faltering defense let Srna and Marko Babic have shots at goal, which Dida either saved or watched go close.

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany (AP) - The wait for a World Cup goal - and a win - is over for Australia.

The goals came in a flurry in the Aussies' stunning rally for a 3-1 victory over Japan on Monday. Tim Cahill scored in the 84th minute and again five minutes later. John Aloisi added one in injury time.

"It was unbelievable to come away with a first World Cup win like that," Aloisi said. "It was 10 minutes of probably the most exciting soccer that Australia has ever seen."

Cahill, who came on in the 53rd minute, made an impressive showing for a player coming off a knee injury who has seen limited playing time heading to the tournament.

"It's been one big massive procedure for me to get fit in such a short period of time," he said. "To do what we did today shows Australian spirit, and it's good to be up there with the rugby and cricket players."

And, for one day at least, up there with soccer's elite.

Monday's comeback added another nerve-jangling chapter to the Socceroos' World Cup story. In November, they upset Uruguay in a penalty-kick shootout in a playoff to qualify.

"We look to moments like these as kids dreaming of the situation," said Cahill.

The Aussies didn't appear capable of even tying the game after falling behind in the first half. But Cahill equalized when he picked up a loose ball off a throw-in and beat Japan goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi with a right-footed shot. Kawaguchi erred in coming out of his net.

Five minutes later, with the Japanese clearly off-balance, Cahill scored from 20 yards with a right-footed shot that went in off the goalpost.

"We have to change everything mentally and physically," said Kawaguchi. "We thought we had the win."

Although the stunned Japanese pushed up for a second goal, it was Australia's Aloisi who found the net in the final seconds from 15 yards after snaking through the defense.

That finished off the comeback for his nation's first World Cup win. Australia's only other trip was in 1974, when it failed to score a goal in losing to host West Germany and East Germany and tying Chile 0-0.

"We started with two strikers," said coach Guus Hiddink, who led South Korea to the semifinals four years ago and the Netherlands that far in 1998. "We had to build up the game with the strikers we had. It was part of the plan and we are very happy."

Shunsuke Nakamura gave Japan a lead in the 26th minute, floating a cross from 25 yards that sailed in over the head of Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

Schwarzer failed to grab the ball when he crashed into a group of players. Japan forward Naohiro Takahara made contact with Schwarzer as the two jumped, but there was no foul and Schwarzer walked off at halftime shaking his head.

"I complained to the referee afterwards," said Schwarzer. "He said to me that he was sorry, that he made a mistake."

Kawaguchi made several key saves off free kicks in the second half before his blunder on the first Aussie goal.

"We had a lot of chances when the game was level," Japan coach Zico said. "But we didn't take advantage and when Australia went to a three (forwards on) top they were able to score."

Japan is in its third straight World Cup. Co-hosts in 2002, the Japanese lost 1-0 in the round of 16 to eventual semifinalist Turkey.

Their chances of advancing are slim now, considering they have Croatia and Brazil ahead. Australia, at least, can a bit more realistically contemplate making the second round.

"We all know this is a once-in-a-lifetime time opportunity and we don't want to be walking away from here having any regrets," defender Craig Moore said. "And that attitude was evident today. We never stopped. And thankfully we got our rewards in the end."
