신화는 멈췄다.. '알프스' 벽 넘지못해 꿈 물거품 
할 말을 잃었다. 안타까운 탄성만이 남았다. 

독일 하노버에서, 서울시청 앞에서, 한반도 전역에서 목이 터질 것 같은 '대~한민국'의 함성이 끊임없이 울려 퍼졌건만 승리의 여신은 야속하게도 태극전사들의 편이 아니었다. 

자랑스러운 23인의 전사들은 원없이 싸웠다. 그들의 투혼은 하노버  하늘  아래 그 어떤 것보다 찬란하게 빛났다. 4천만의 붉은 함성은 마지막 순간까지도 그칠  줄 몰랐다. 

그러나 승부는 승부였다. 2006년 6월 태극호의 운명은 붉은 악마의  눈물  속에 안타까운 좌절을 맛봐야 했다. 

딕 아드보카트 감독이 이끄는 한국 축구대표팀은 24일(이하 한국시간) 하노버에서 열린 2006 독일월드컵축구 조별리그 G조 최종전 '알프스 전사' 스위스와  운명을 건 싸움에서 전반 23분 필리페 센데로스에게 통한의 결승골을 허용하고  후반  32분 알렉산더 프라이에게 석연찮은 추가골을 내줘 0-2로 분패했다. 

같은 시간 쾰른에서 열린 프랑스-토고전에서는 '늙은' 프랑스가 토고를 2-0으로 눌렀다. 

1승1무1패(승점 4)가 된 한국은 조 1위 스위스(2승1무.승점 7), 2위 프랑스(1승2무.승점 5)에 밀려 16강이 겨루는 2라운드 문턱에서 물러났다. 

한국 축구는 1954년 스위스 월드컵 이후 52년 만에 거둔 원정 첫 승과 역대  원정 대회 사상 최고 승점(4점)을 따내는 데 만족해야 했다. 

심판의 판정도 불리하게 작용했다. 주심을 맡은 아르헨티나의 오라시오  엘리손도 심판은 후반 프라이의 추가골 상황에서 부심이 오프사이드 깃발을 들었지만 경기를 그대로 진행시켜 골을 인정했다. 

꺼림칙한 판정이 승부에 끼어들면서 태극호의 꿈은 무참하게 물거품으로 돌아갔다. 

아드보카트 감독은 전면 공격 대형으로 승부를 걸었다. 박주영-조재진-박지성을 스리톱(3-top)으로, 이천수를 섀도 공격수로 놓는 사실상의 4-2-4 포메이션으로  초반부터 파상 공세를 펴는 전략을 썼다. 

초반은 일진일퇴의 공방이었다. 

전반 3분 이천수의 왼쪽 측면 돌파에 이어진 크로스가 조재진의 머리 위로 날아간 뒤 6분과 8분 하칸 야킨, 트란퀼로 바르네타에게 연속 공간 돌파를 허용했다. 

곧이어 박주영이 흘려준 볼을 박지성이 기습 중거리 슛으로 연결했으나  골키퍼 품에 안겼다. 

전반 10분 패스미스로 위기가 찾아왔다. 바르네타가 골키퍼와 1대1로 맞서 슈팅을 날렸으나 최진철이 육탄 방어로 슛을 굴절시켰다. 

공방을 주고받던 한국은 전반 23분 안타까운 선제골을 허용하고 말았다. 

박주영이 얼떨결에 바르네타를 손으로 잡아끌다 경고를 받았고 야킨이 미드필드 우중간에서 프리킥 찬스를 잡았다. 

야킨의 왼발 프리킥은 날카롭게 휘어져 문전으로 향했다. 순간  공격에  가담한 스위스 장신(190㎝) 수비수 센데로스는 불쑥 튀어올라 페널티지역 왼쪽에서  헤딩슛을 날렸다. 

정확히 앞 이마에 명중한 볼은 이운재가 미처 손쓸 틈도 없이 한국 골문 오른쪽 상단에 꽂혔다. 최진철이 점프해 눈두덩이가 찢어지는 투혼으로 헤딩슛을  막아보려 했지만 무위였다. 

한국은 전반 막판부터 반격에 나섰지만 동점골은 쉽게 터지지 않았다. 

전반 44분 이천수의 중거리슛은 골키퍼에 막혔고 45분 골문 바로 앞에서 박주영의 왼발 터닝슛은 빗맞았다. 곧바로 이천수가 다시 오른발  중거리포를  작렬했으나 이번에도 골키퍼 추베르뷜러의 손끝에 걸려 아웃됐다. 

전반을 0-1로 뒤졌지만 이 때까지는 희망이 있었다. 같은 시간 프랑스와 토고가 득점없이 비기고 있었기 때문이다. 

그러나 한국의 16강행에 먹구름이 드리운 건 하노버가 아니라 쾰른에서였다. 

프랑스는 후반 10분 파트리크 비에라가 토고의 골문을 열었고 후반 16분 티에리 앙리가 추가골을 터뜨렸다. 

프랑스가 2-0으로 앞서가고 있음을 안 아드보카트 감독은 비장의 카드를 꺼냈다. 

수비수 이영표를 빼고 안정환을 투입, 공격수를 5명으로 늘리는 모험을  감행했다. 

하지만 오히려 역습을 당해 후반 19분 프라이에게 돌파를 허용했고 프라이의 오른발 강슛은 골대를 강하게 때려 다행히 추가 실점을 피했다. 

후반 20분 박주영 대신 설기현을 투입한 한국은 후반 21분  조재진이  이천수의 크로스를 방아찧기 헤딩으로 꽂았으나 골키퍼 선방에 막혔다. 

석연찮은 추가골은 후반 32분에 허용했다. 

수비를 굳히기 위해 투입된 스위스의 사비에 마르제라즈가  미드필더  중앙에서 패스를 찔러줄 때 프라이는 분명히 오프사이드 위치에 있었고 부심은 깃발을 들었다. 

그러나 플레이는 계속됐고 프라이는 이운재와 1대1로 맞선 뒤 방어막을 뚫고 들어가 추가골을 뽑았다. 

한국 선수들이 달려가 항의했지만 주심은 판정을 번복하지 않았다. 

아드보카트 감독도 테크니컬 지역에서 거칠게 항의했지만 받아들여지지 않았다. 

주심은 마르제라즈의 전진 패스가 이호의 오른 발에 맞고 굴절돼 프라이에게 연결됐기 때문에 오프사이드가 아니라고 판정했다. 

앞서 스위스의 핸들링 상황에서는 주심이 휘슬을 불지 않았다. 전반 12분과  43분 센데로스와 수비수 파트리크 뮐러가 페널티지역 경계와 안에서 볼이  손에  맞는 장면이 있었지만 핸들링 파울을 선언하지 않았고 후반 추가 실점 전에도 비슷한  장면이 또 나왔다. 

아드보카트호는 막판 공세를 취했다. 후반 40분 김진규가 이호의  패스를  받아 때린 슛은 크로스바를 튕기고 나갔다. 골대까지 아드보카트호의 편이 아니었다. 

주심의 휘슬이 울리자 태극전사들은 머리를 그라운드에 박고 쓰러졌다.  전광판에는 프랑스의 2-0 승리 소식을 알리는 사인이 떴다. 본부석 왼쪽을 가득 메운 붉은 악마들은 할 말을 잃고 하늘만 바라볼 뿐 자리를 뜰 줄 몰랐다. 

아드보카트호는 월드컵 본선 일정을 마치고 곧바로 귀국길에 올라 25일 오후  4시5분 아시아나항공편으로 귀국한다.

심판의 장난에 날아간 16강 티켓! 
  
아드보카트호가 너무나도 아쉽게 16강 진출에 실패했다. 심판들의 이해하기 힘든 장난(?)으로 인해 16강 문턱에서 주저앉고 말았다.  

국제축구연맹(FIFA) 회장의 파워를 다시 한 번 느낄 수 있는 한판이었다. 스위스가 이미 펼쳤던 프랑스전과 토고전에서 나온 억지 판정은 나오지 않길 바랐지만, 그 우려는 곱절의 실망으로 다가왔다. 태극전사들의 상승세를 끊는 휘슬 침묵과 절묘한 타이밍(?)에서 터져나온 오심. 그저 한숨만이 나올 뿐이다.  

이날 심판들의 계획된(?) 장난은 전,후반 결정적일 때 2차례 터져나왔다. 첫 번째 장난은 전반 42분에 펼쳐졌다. 필립 센데로스에게 선취골을 얻어맞고 0-1로 뒤지던 한국은 동점골을 위해 필사적으로 공세에 나섰다.  

한국이 수차례 좋은 찬스를 맞이하자 심판은 위기의식을 느낀 것일까. 코너킥 상황에서 스위스 수비수의 팔에 확실하게 볼이 맞았음에도 불구하고 심판은 휘슬을 입에 물지 않았다.  

프랑스전 핸드볼 파울 묵인의 장면이 머리를 스치는 순간이었다. 이 때 페널티킥이 인정이 됐더라면, 한국은 스위스를 확실하게 압박할 수 있었다. 심판의 장난이 태극전사들의 상승세에 찬물을 뒤엎은 격이었다. 

두 번째 장난은 첫 번째 장난이 잊혀질 때 쯤에 나왔다. 후반 32분. 주심과 부심은 역전의 희망을 버리지 않고 있던 태극전사들의 가슴에 비수를 꽂았다.  

엇갈린 오프사이드 판정. 부심은 몇 초 동안 오프사이드를 알리기 위해 깃발을 높이 쳐들고 있었으나, 주심은 이를 인정하지 않았다. 그리고 무인지경 속에서 알렉산데르 프라이의 추가골. 물론 주심의 판정이 부심의 그것보다 우선권이 있는 것은 사실이다.  

하지만 오프사이드와 관련된 판정에서 더 전문성을 가지는 부심의 권위는 온데간데 없었다. 마치 잘 짜여진 각본처럼 주심은 부심의 오프사이드 주장에 눈도 깜빡하지 않았고, 부심 역시 주심에게 아무런 주장도 하지 못했다. 오심 여부를 떠나서 생각하더라도, 주심과 부심의 행동에는 뭔가가 석연치 않은 부분이 분명히 있었다. 

페널티킥 찬스를 놓치고, 어이없는 판정으로 골을 헌납했으니 승부는 이미 경기 전에 결정되어 있었던 것인지도 모른다. 억울한 느낌이 지워지지 않지만, 4년 후의 월드컵을 기약하면서 아쉬움을 접을까 한다. 마지막으로 태극전사들에게 격려의 메시지를 전하면서 글을 맺는다.  

"모든 태극전사 여러분! 2002한일월드컵에서의 4강신화가 우연이 아니었음을 충분히 증명해서 너무 감사하고 기쁩니다. 정정당당하게 멋진 패배를 당한 태극전사들에게 뜨거운 박수를 보냅니다. 태극전사 파이팅!" (스포츠서울) 
  
스위스 뮐러 '마라도나를 뛰어넘는 신의 손' 

마라도나의 `신의 손`이 한 골을 이끌어냈다면 스위스 수비수 파트리크 뮐러의 손은 독일월드컵에서만 두 골을 막아냈다. 그런 의미에서 더 `위대한 신의 손`인지도 모르겠다. 

한국은 24일(한국시간) 독일 하노버 니더작센슈타디온에서 열린 스위스와의 독일월드컵 G조 예선 마지막 경기에서 심판의 석연치 않은 판정 덫에 걸려 아쉽게 0-2로 패했다. 

후반전 부심이 오프사이드를 선언한 상황에서 허용한 억울한 골도 아쉬웠지만 전반 코너킥 상황에서 상대 수비수의 손을 맞고 나온 상황도 한국에게는 안타까운 장면이었다. 

펠리프 센데로스에게 선제골을 허용해 한국이 0-1로 뒤진 전반 42분. 이천수의 약 20m짜리 중거리슛이 골키퍼에 걸리면서 한국은 코너킥을 얻었다. 

오른쪽 코너에서 다시 키커로 나선 이천수는 스위스 문전에 낮고 날카롭케 크로스를 올렸다. 그런데 이 볼이 스위스 수비수 뮐러의 팔에 맞고 흘러나왔다. 얼핏 보기에는 뮐러의 가슴에 맞은 것으로 보였지만 TV 화면으로 확인된 결과 명백히 손에 맞은 것이 확인됐다. 

한국의 몇몇 선수들이 손을 들어 핸들링 반칙을 주장했다. 하지만 아르헨티나 출신의 호라치오 엘리손도 주심은 이를 보지 못했고 플레이는 계속됐다. 한국은 마지막에 수비수 김진규가 슛을 시도했지만 결국 득점으로 연결시키지 못했다. 

만약 뮐러의 핸들링을 심판이 봤다면 충분히 페널티킥을 얻을 수 있는 상황이었기 때문에 한국으로선 한 골을 그대로 놓친 셈. 우연이라고 하기에는 이번 대회에서 주심이 스위스의 잘못을 눈감아 준 경우가 너무 많았다. 

공교롭게도 한국의 코너킥을 팔로 막아낸 뮐러는 이미 한번 비슷한 상황으로 물의를 일으켰던 상습범. 프랑스전에서 티에리 앙리의 오른발 슛이 그의 왼손에 맞았지만 당시 주심은 이를 인정하지 않았다. 레몽 도메네크 프랑스 감독은 경기 후 "뮐러는 경기 중 손을 써도 되는 선수인가"라며 분통을 터뜨린 바 있다. 

뮐러는 핸들링 외에도 토고전에서 페널티지역 안에서 상대 공격수 에마뉘엘 아데바요르를 걸어 넘어뜨렸지만 이 역시 주심에 눈에는 들어오지 않았다. 

한국은 스위스전을 앞두고 불리한 심판판정에 대한 걱정을 한 것이 사실이었다. 심판들이 스위스 출신인 제프 블래터 FIFA회장의 눈치를 보느라 공정한 판정을 내리지 않는다는 의혹들이 여기저기서 흘러나왔기 때문이었다.

Swiss eliminate 2002 semifinalist 

HANOVER, Germany (AP) - It's been so long since the Swiss reached the second round at the World Cup, their fans didn't want to go home. 

Thousands remained in Hanover's World Cup stadium for nearly an hour after their team left the field following a 2-0 victory over South Korea, waving flags, singing, chanting and some joining in a conga line through the upper deck. 

They only left when security ushered them out, but surely would be partying through the night. 

The victory sent Switzerland, absent from soccer's biggest show for 12 years, into the second round as the Group G winner. The loss sent the 2002 semifinalists back to South Korea and eliminated the last Asian hopeful. 

"We deservedly won and now we're proud to be in the top 16 in the world," said striker Alexander Frei, who scored one of the two goals. "The team's goal was achieved. Everything else from here is extra." 

Philippe Senderos headed in Hakan Yakin's free kick in the 23rd minute, and Frei added a disputed goal in the 77th to earn a match against Ukraine on Monday in Cologne. 

The South Koreans return home, unable to prove to skeptics that their stunning run to the final four at home in 2002 wasn't due to the home-field advantage. 

"We have no regrets," midfielder Park Ji-sung said. "From now on, Korean soccer needs to be developed more and more." 

The Swiss even shed some blood in the victory. Senderos' follow-through on his header struck defender Choi Jin-cheul in the face, opening cuts on the faces of both. 

Senderos came to the touchline to celebrate his goal with blood streaming down his nose from a cut between his eyes, while Choi was left with a cut above his right eye. 

Both needed attention to close the wounds and returned five minutes later, Choi with a hairnet-like cap. Senderos was forced out of the game in the 51st with a dislocated shoulder after falling on his right arm in a clash with Cho Jae-jin. Swiss coach Koebi Kuhn said Senderos will miss the Ukraine match. 

Needing a victory to assure their advancement and eager to legitimize their 2002 showing, South Korea inserted Park Chu-young as essentially a fourth attacker, leaving Lee Young-pyo and Lee Ho alone in midfield. 

The plan worked initially with a third-minute opportunity when Lee Chun-soo got to a through ball near the end line, but his pass back across the goal could not find Park Ji-sung. 

Within 10 minutes though, the Swiss were able to take control. 

As South Korea's defense became more desperate, Park pulled down Tranquillo Barnetta at the top of the South Korean defensive third, drawing a yellow card and giving the Swiss a free kick. 

Yakin, included in Switzerland's World Cup squad only after striker Johan Vonlanthen was injured, curled a left-footed drive from 35 yards, where Senderos ran on to it and headed it past goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae. 

South Korea coach Dick Advocaat still tried to find the combination to spark his side. 

The Koreans created several chances, one of which Swiss goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuehler had to push over the crossbar when Cho bounced a header off a corner kick in the 66th minute. 

But the push forward made South Korea vulnerable to counters, and Frei finally converted in the 71st to ensure the Swiss victory and end South Korea's hopes. 

"They controlled the first half. We tried to make things difficult for them with five to six strikers and gave them a lot of pressure," Advocaat said. "We started with four strikers, and at the international level, that's quite dangerous. And that allowed them to play how they did and they kept attacking on counters." 

South Korea, which had never won a World Cup game outside of Asia until a 2-1 victory over Togo on June 13 in Frankfurt, finished third behind France, which beat Togo 2-0 in Cologne. 

France will face Spain in Hanover on Tuesday. 

Switzerland was the only team to finish the first round without allowing a goal. 

"We're proud we didn't give up a goal, Zuberbuehler said. "It's fun playing with this team. We fought defensively all together." 

Ukraine, which recovered from a 4-0 beating by Spain in its opening game to advance to the second round, will be a new test for the Swiss. 

"We know it's possible to go another round. And we feel like doing it," said Kuhn, who celebrated his 50th game in charge of Switzerland. "I'd rather have the three points than the cake." 
 
 

'늙은' 프랑스가 토고를 잡고 1998년 월드컵축구 정상에 오른 이후 8년만에 16강에 올랐다. 

프랑스는 24일(이하 한국시간) 쾰른 월드컵구장에서 열린 2006  독일월드컵축구 G조 3차전 토고와 경기에서 전반을 득점없이 보낸 뒤 후반 10분에 터진 파트리크 비에라의 선제골과 6분뒤에 나온 티에리 앙리의 추가골을 묶어 2-0으로 완승했다. 

1승2무로 승점 5를 따낸 프랑스는 스위스(2승1무)에 이어 조 2위로 16강에 진출했다. 

프랑스는 28일 새벽 4시에 하노버에서 H조 1위 '무적함대' 스페인과 8강 진출을 다투게 됐다. 

전반에 많은 기회를 놓치고 0-0으로 후반을 맞은 프랑스는 10분만에 토고의  빗장을 벗겨냈다. 

후반 10분에 프랑크 리베리가 골문 약간 왼쪽에서 정면에 있던 비에라에게 절묘한 패스를 연결했고 이를 이어받은 비에라가 돌면서 그대로 오른발 강슛, 토고의 그물을 갈랐다. 

추가골은 6분 뒤에 나왔다. 이번엔 선제골의 주인공 비에라가 윌리 사뇰이 띄운 공을 헤딩으로 문전에 있던 앙리에게 떨어뜨려 주자 앙리가 역시 오른발로 이를  차넣어 2-0을 만들었다. 

토고는 후반 5분만에 에마뉘엘 아데바요르가 프랑스 골키퍼 파비앵  바르테즈와 1대1로 맞서는 기회를 맞았으나 오프사이드로 선언돼 아쉬움을 삼켰다. 

프랑스는 전반에도 몇 차례 득점 기회가 있었다. 

14분에는 다비드 트레제게의 패스를 이어받은 리베리가 완벽한  노마크  찬스를 맞았으나 이를 자신이 차지 않고 앙리에게 연결, 오프사이드가 선언됐다. 

앙리의 슛은 토고의 그물을 흔들었지만 무효로 선언됐다. 프랑스 선수들은 항의를 해봤지만 판정은 뒤바뀌지 않았다. 

프랑스는 또 전반 39분에 플로랑 말루다가 강력한 중거리슛을 날렸고 이를 코시 아가사 토고 골키퍼가 가까스로 쳐냈다. 

이 공이 회전을 먹으며 골라인을 넘어가려는 찰나 아가사 골키퍼가  공을  덮쳐 실점 위기를 막았다. 

개막 전부터 감독의 사퇴 후 복귀, 출전수당 논란 등으로 독일월드컵 최고의  '뉴스 메이커'로 떠올랐던 토고는 월드컵 첫 출전에 3패로 짐을 쌌다. (연합뉴스) 
 
Togo 0 : 2 France 

COLOGNE, Germany (AP) - France finally won its game of brinkmanship and a World Cup game for the first time since capturing the title eight years ago. 

Teetering on the edge of another embarrassing first-round elimination from the World Cup, the 1998 champion beat Togo 2-0 on Friday to advance to the final 16 for a game against Spain. 

Patrick Vieira, leading the team in place of suspended captain Zinedine Zidane, scored the first goal on his 30th birthday and set up the second for Thierry Henry in a six-minute span in the second half to help France advance as the second-place team in Group G with five points. Switzerland finished first after beating South Korea 2-0. 

"Of course it's stressful when you don't score, and especially when we couldn't afford to concede a goal," France coach Raymond Domenech said. "But once we found out the Swiss had scored a second goal, we were much more calm." 

Vieira lifted his game after two of his worst performances ever in a French shirt against Switzerland and the Koreans. 

"I was really motivated as we think we have a really good team and we don't deserve not to go to the next round," he said. "You have to work hard and I am quite happy for my performance tonight." 

Henry said he was thankful to score his second goal in two games. 

"When we got into the dressing room at halftime it was a bit worrying, because you think their goalkeeper is going to have one of those games," the Arsenal striker said. "He was saving everything and you think he can only get more and more confident. But we managed to stay calm." 

Four years ago, France went out tamely in the first round without scoring a goal, losing to Senegal and Denmark and tying 0-0 with Uruguay. 

It was the same pattern at this World Cup as Domenech's team wasted chances in a 0-0 draw with Switzerland and then surrendered the lead in a 1-1 tie with South Korea. The French needed a victory over Togo to reach the second round and, having wasted chance after chance, finally calmed the nerves of their fans with a performance which had been long overdue. 

David Trezeguet and Franck Ribery wasted four chances between them before Togo caved. The French had scored just one goal in 505 World Cup minutes before the two-goal flurry in the second half. 

Zidane, whose career would have ended without a France win, will be back when the French face the Spaniards in Hanover on Tuesday. 

"Yes, it is a great match. I expected to play them but not in the same scenario," Domenech said. "I thought they would finish second and we would finish first. But, never mind, it is a great match anyway." 

After a game played in the city where he was born, Togo coach Otto Pfister said he had plenty of reasons to stay on despite his row with the federation over bonus payments. 

"Togo has a future not only at African level but also at world level," he said. "We were confronted by the ex-world champion and ex-European champion. It is the class of player who makes the difference." 

Knowing another first-round elimination would be another disaster for French soccer, Domenech's team wasted no time in pressuring Togo and created a stream of early chances. 

"We saw what France is capable of and I can assure you we are more than motivated," said Lilian Thuram, who set a French record with his 117th international appearance. "If we weren't, we wouldn't have got through." 

Although they created plenty of chances, little went right for the French team before halftime and there was a tense look about Domenech's players as they left the field with the game scoreless. 

But the breakthrough came when Ribery went on a run and, instead of shooting, opted to feed the ball inside to Vieira. The Juventus midfielder spun to fired a powerful right foot shot past Agassa from 10 yards and the tension lifted. 

"I've been right for a long time about him, when others have not," Domenech said. "He is exceptional. He scored a goal and he created a goal. This does not surprise me, that's the Vieira I know. He will keep doing this for us until the end." 

There was still danger at the other end and French defender Willy Sagnol blocked a powerful, goalbound shot from Emmanuel Adebayor. 

But France's problems disappeared in the 61st minute when Vieira headed on a lobbed pass from Sagnol and Henry held off a defender to score with a low right foot shot.
