Vicente del Bosque fielded an unchanged line-up to that which defeated neighbours Portugal 1-0 four days ago. Conversely, Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino made six changes to the team which squeezed past Japan on penalties. Left out were his trio of misfiring strikers, with Roque Santa Cruz, Edgar Benitez and Lucas Barrios all consigned to the bench. 

Both sides went into the match aiming for new heights. Spain clinched a top-four finish in 1950 in a round-robin final stage but they have never competed in a FIFA World Cup™ semi-final, while Paraguay had already achieved a first by progressing past the Round of 16. 

If Spain were feeling complacent, then one of the new faces in La Albirroja's forward line, Jonathan Santana, provided an early wake-up call by forcing Iker Casillas into a save in the opening minute. Paraguay did not allow Spain to settle and successfully disrupted their normally crisp passing game during the first half. The in-form Villa only rarely found space on the left flank in the early stages, while at the other end Nelson Valdez looked dangerous whenever Paraguay made forays forward. 

Spain midfielder Xavi took matters into his own hands on the half-hour mark with a wonderful snap-shot, the dipping volley from 25 yards clearing the crossbar with goalkeeper Justo Villar scrambling. Minutes later at the other end, Santana narrowly failed to connect with a diving header from a Claudio Morel cross. Valdez then had the ball in the net four minutes before the break only to see his effort disallowed for offside as Paraguay finished the first half in a positive frame of mind. 

The second half commenced in similar fashion to the first period, with neither goalkeeper under threat until a remarkable period around the hour-mark. The drama began when Gerard Pique wrestled Oscar Cardozo to the ground as a corner, Paraguay's first of the night, was played in from the left. Cardozo looked set to give La Albirroja a stunning lead from the penalty spot against the European champions only for skipper Casillas to rescue his side with a superb diving save to his left. 

Within 60 seconds, Antolin Alcaraz was deemed to have bundled over Villa in the penalty area and Spain had their own chance from the spot. Xabi Alonso buried his spot-kick but Spanish joy was shortlived, with a retake ordered for encroachment. This time Villar dived low to his left and parried Alonso’s effort, and Paraguay scrambled the rebound to safety. 

Minutes later, Andres Iniesta hit a curling effort that was well blocked by Villar, and it was indeed to be the Barcelona midfielder who proved the difference in the decisive moment of the match seven minutes from time. Budweiser Man of the Match Iniesta made a driving run from midfield, teeing up Pedro, whose shot hit Villar's right-hand post before rebounding to Villa. The Spain No7 accepted the gift. Placing his effort against the left-hand post, the ball rebounded off the opposite post before eventually nestling into the net. 

In the final minute, Casillas saved his side with a double block from Santa Cruz and Barrios, while Villa was similarly denied by the impressive Villar following a lightning counter-attack. 
 
 
 

비야는 4일 새벽(한국시간) 파라과이와의 2010 남아프리카공화국 월드컵 8강전에서 결정적인 상황에서 결승골을 뽑아내며 스페인에 준결승 진출을 선사했다. 더구나 스페인은 1950년 브라질 월드컵 이후 60년 만의 준결승 진출이어서 기쁨이 더했다. 

비야 본인에게도 파라과이전 득점은 뜻 깊은 골이었다. 이 경기 전까지 4골로 미로슬라프 클로제,토마스 뮐러(이상 독일), 베슬러이 스네이더르(네덜란드), 곤살로 이과인(아르헨티나), 로베르트 비테크(슬로바키아)와 공동 득점 1위였지만 1골을 더 보태며 5골로 단독 선두에 나서게 됐기 때문이다. 

페르난도 토레스 밑에 처진 공격수로 나선 비야는 특유의 빠른 움직임과 날카로운 슈팅으로 최근의 좋은 컨디션을 유감 없이 보여주었다. 그러나 파라과이의 두터운 수비와 후스토 비야르의 선방에 막히며 공격은 무위로 그치기 일쑤였다. 

비야는 전방에서 고군분투했지만 스페인은 파라과이 수비에 고전하며 공격의 활로를 찾지 못했다. 설상가상으로 후반 15분에는 비야가 얻어낸 페널티킥을 사비 알론소가 실축하며 절호의 득점 기회마저 놓치고 말았다. 

그러나 비야는 좌절하지 않았고 더욱 파라과이 골대를 향해 침투했다. 그 결과 후반 38분 페드로의 슈팅이 골대 맞고 나오자 재빨리 받아서 슈팅으로 연결하며 골대 안으로 집어넣었다. 이 골은 결승골이 되었고 비야는 또다시 스페인의 영웅으로 위기에서 구해냈다.

무너진 남미, 남아공 월드컵도 유럽의 축제? 
 
남아메리카(이하 남미) 팀들이 차례로 무너졌다. 유럽의 3개 팀이 4강에 안착하며 우승 가능성을 높인 반면 남미에선 우루과이만이 살아남았다. 

2010년 남아프리카공화국 월드컵 조별 리그에선 남미 국가들의 강세가 눈에 띄었다. 본선에 오른 5개 팀 모두 16강에 오르는 진기록을 세웠다. 칠레를 제외하곤 모두 조 1위로 16강에 진출했다. 유럽과 아프리카의 부진과 남미, 아시아 팀들의 약진이 대조됐다. 

하지만 16강을 거쳐 8강에 당도하면서 남미의 분위기는 급격히 어두워졌다. 조직력을 앞세운 유럽을 넘지 못한 탓이 컸다. 우루과이를 제외한 나머지 4팀은 모두 유럽의 팀들에게 발목을 잡혔다. 

지난 2일(한국시간)에는 네덜란드가 우승후보 0순위 브라질을 2-1로 격파했다. 네덜란드는 1994년 미국 월드컵, 1998년 프랑스 월드컵에서 당한 굴욕을 되갚았고 사상 첫 우승컵에 한 발짝 다가섰다. 

네덜란드의 승리가 다른 유럽 팀들에게 자극이 됐던 것일까. 하루 뒤에 열린 독일-아르헨티나, 스페인-파라과이전에서도 양상은 다르지 않았다. 

독일은 아르헨티나를 상대로 강한 압박과 빠른 공격 전개를 바탕으로 한 수위의 전력을 선보이며 4-0 대승을 거뒀다. 스페인은 파라과이의 수비 축구에 고전했지만 다비드 비야의 결승골에 힘입어 60년 만에 4강 진출 티켓을 획득했다. 

4강 대진은 독일-스페인, 네덜란드-우루과이다. 적어도 유럽의 한 팀이 결승 진출을 확정한다. 결국 이번 월드컵도 지난 2006년 때와 같이 유럽 팀들간의 축제가 될 확률이 높아졌다. 2006년 월드컵에선 포르투갈, 독일, 이탈리아, 프랑스가 4강에 올랐고 이탈리아가 우승했다. (스포탈코리아 2010-07-04)
