This transboundary property stretches over 12 countries. Since the end of the last Ice Age, European Beech spread from a few isolated refuge areas in the Alps, Carpathians, Dinarides, Mediterranean and Pyrenees over a short period of a few thousand years in a process that is still ongoing. The successful expansion across a whole continent is related to the tree’s adaptability and tolerance of different climatic, geographical and physical conditions.
‘카르파티아 원시 너도밤나무 숲과 독일의 고대 너도밤나무 숲(Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany, 독일·슬로바키아·우크라이나)’ 유산은 여러 나라의 국경을 넘어 자라난 너도밤나무 숲으로 현재에는 총 12개국의 영토에 걸쳐 생육하고 있다. 따라서 유산의 명칭을 ‘카르파티아 및 유럽의 기타 지역에 생육하는 고대 및 원시 너도밤나무 숲(Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe)’으로 변경하고 유산의 경계 또한 확장하여 등재한다. 알프스·카르파티아·지중해·피레네 산맥 등 소수의 고립된 지역에서 자라는 유럽 너도밤나무는 마지막 빙하기 말 이후부터 수천 년이라는 단기간 내 인근 지역으로 퍼져나갔고 현재까지도 확산이 진행 중이다. 이와 같은 성공적인 식생 영역의 확장은 다양한 기후·지리적·물리적 조건에 대응하여 성장한 너도밤나무의 적응성 및 내성과 관련이 있다.
