박찬호, 동점상황 등판 3이닝 완벽투…시즌 첫 구원승

뉴욕 양키스의 박찬호(37)가 동점 상황에서 등판해 인상적인 호투를 펼친 뒤 구원승까지 따냈다.

박찬호는 8일(이하 한국시간) 펜웨이파크에서 열린 메이저리그 보스턴 레드삭스와의 원정경기에 1-1 동점이던 7회말 마운드에 올라 3이닝을 1피안타 무실점으로 막아냈다. 삼진도 1개를 빼앗았다.

양키스는 박찬호가 마운드를 지키던 연장 10회초에 2점을 뽑아 3-1로 승리했다. 덕분에 박찬호도 기분좋은 구원승을 기록했다. 박찬호 개인으로선 메이저리그 통산 121번째 승리였다. 지난 해 6월15일 구원승을 거둔 이후 거의 10개월만에 맛본 승리였다. 공교롭게도 당시 상대도 보스턴이었다.

이날 호투로 박찬호는 시즌 개막전에서 패전의 멍에를 썼던 아쉬움을 말끔히 씻었다. 평균자책점도 27.00에서 4.91로 끌어내렸다. 조 지라디 감독은 1-1 동점의 중요한 상황에서 다시 한번 박찬호에게 믿음을 줬고 박찬호도 감독의 기대를 완벽하게 충족시켰다.

6이닝 6피안타 1실점으로 호투한 선발투수 앤디 페티트에 이어 두 번째 투수로 마운드에 오른 박찬호는 첫 타자 마르코 스쿠타로에게 변화구 2개를 던져 우익수 뜬공으로 간단히 처리했다.

이어 다음타자 제이코비 엘스버리를 상대한 박찬호는 풀카운트 상황에서 6구째 93마일짜리 투심패스트볼을 던져 중견수 플라이를 이끌어냈다. 쉽게 2아웃을 잡아낸 박찬호는 시즌 개막전에서 동점홈런을 허용했던 더스틴 페드로이아 마저 중견수 뜬공으로 아웃시켰다.

박찬호는 7회말에 이어 8회말에도 완벽투를 이어갔다. 첫 타자 빅터 마르티네스에게 볼카운트 2-1에서 4구째 느린 커브를 던져 평범한 2루수 땅볼을 유도했다. 다음타자 케빈 유킬리스에게는 초구에 94마일(151km)짜리 빠른공으로 정면승부를 펼쳤다. 타구가 제법 멀리 날아갔지만 결과는 중견수 플라이였다.

가볍게 2아웃을 이끌어낸 박찬호는 강타자 데이비드 오티스 마저 3구 삼진으로 잡아내면서 깔끔하게 이닝을 마감했다.

박찬호는 7회와 8회에 이어 9회에도 양키스 마운드를 지켰다. 워낙 구위가 뛰어나다보니 감독이 계속 믿고 맡긴 것. 첫 타자 애드리안 벨트레를 우익수 플라이로 처리한 박찬호는 다음타자 JD 드류에게 중전안타를 허용해 퍼펙트 행진을 마감했다.

하지만 안타를 내준 뒤에도 박찬호는 강했다. 1사 1루 상황에서 박찬호는 마이크 캐머론을 볼카운트 2-2에서 좌익수 플라이로 처리해 2아웃을 잡아냈다. 이어 타석에 들어선 스쿠타로를 좌익수 뜬공으로 아웃시키면서 자신의 역할을 완벽하게 해냈다.

구원승 기회도 함께 찾아왔다. 9회까지 단 1득점에 머물렀던 양키스는 연장 10회초 공격에서 커티스 그랜더슨의 솔로홈런으로 역전을 이뤘다. 보스턴의 특급마무리 조나단 파펠본으로부터 빼앗은 홈런이어서 더욱 의미가 있었다. 양키스는 이후 찾아온 1사 만루 기회에서도 마크 테세이라의 유격수 땅볼로 1점을 추가했다.

2점차로 리드한 양키스는 10회말 마무리투수 마리아노 리베라를 투입해 깔끔하게 승리를 지켜냈다.

Granderson HR leads Yanks to 3-1 win over Red Sox

BOSTON (AP)—Curtis Granderson(notes) is fitting in just fine with the World Series champions.

Three games. Two homers. One solo shot in the 10th inning Wednesday night.

The Yankees’ new centerfielder hit an 0-and-1 pitch into the right-field seats off Jonathan Papelbon(notes) and New York beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 on Wednesday night.

“I never go into a situation trying to hit home runs because I still don’t consider myself a home run hitter,” Granderson said, “but sometimes you look up and you’re able to drive the ball out of the ballpark.”

Granderson hit 30 homers last year for Detroit, which traded him to New York. He was moving to a team that lost World Series MVP Hideki Matsui(notes) and Johnny Damon(notes) to free agency.

“There’s always so many expectations and people want to compare you to the people that left,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “So far he’s reacted really well, and that can’t be said about everyone who come to New York.”

Granderson said he just wants to be “a piece of the puzzle,” but Derek Jeter(notes) said it can be important for newcomers to play well early in their careers with the Yankees.

“If someone scuffles a little bit, people start asking a lot of questions,” he said. “Us, as players, we realize you’re going to have ups and downs throughout the course of the year. So we really don’t pay much attention to it, but I’m sure if you’re answering questions about it all the time, it probably gets annoying.”

Granderson homered in the first game of the season but made the final out in Boston’s 9-7 win on Sunday night. He scored a run Tuesday night when New York won 6-4. He has two homers against Papelbon in his career, the only player with more than one.

“I felt really good tonight,” Papelbon said. “It’s a classic situation where you make one mistake and you pay for it. … It seems like I’ve mad a few mistakes to Granderson.”

Papelbon (0-1) struck out the next batter. But, after three walks, Mark Teixeira(notes) drove in the final run against Scott Atchison(notes) on a groundout as the Red Sox wasted an outstanding performance by John Lackey(notes) in his first appearance since signing an $82.5 million, five-year contract as a free agent in December.

He allowed three hits in six innings and left with a 1-0 lead.

“I was able to make a couple of big pitches in tough spots,” Lackey said. “I had a lot of things on my mind today. With added pressure and being here I wanted to make a good impression.”

Andy Pettitte(notes) allowed one run in six innings. Then Chan Ho Park(notes) (1-1) allowed one hit in three scoreless innings and Mariano Rivera(notes) pitched the 10th for his second save.

Pettitte was knocked down trying to tag Jacoby Ellsbury(notes) after taking a throw at first base on the first at bat of the game. Ellsbury was safe and Pettitte was groggy.

“I got a little whiplash or something in my neck,” he said. “I was in survival mode there for the first couple of innings, that’s for sure, but after that I felt like I settled in pretty good.”

The Yankees set a record for the modern era with their 17th straight win in regular-season games that were tied after seven innings. They equaled the 1906 New York Giants at 16 on Tuesday night.

David Ortiz(notes) had gone 0 for 7 in his first two games following the worst of his first seven seasons with Boston. And after Tuesday night’s game, he responded with an expletive-filled tirade when asked about his slow start.

On Wednesday, though, with the crowd chanting “Papi! Papi! Papi!” he gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead in the third with his first hit in nine at bats. His two-out single scored Dustin Pedroia(notes), who led off with a double. But in his other three at-bats, Ortiz ended innings with two strikeouts and a groundout.

The Yankees tied the game in the seventh after Scott Schoeneweis(notes) replaced Lackey. Jorge Posada(notes) doubled but Granderson struck out. Daniel Bard(notes) relieved and, on an 0-and-2 count, allowed Nick Swisher’s(notes) tying single.

Kevin Youkilis(notes) was beaned in the fifth by Pettitte and went to first base without incident. That moved Victor Martinez(notes), who had singled, to second with two outs. Then Ortiz struck out on a low pitch outside the strike zone.

Jeter led off the sixth and was hit by Lackey on a 2-2 pitch, prompting home plate umpire Paul Schrieber to issue warnings to both dugouts.

Notes: Cano has hit safely in 16 consecutive games against Boston. … Teixeira went 0 for 12 with three walks in the series. … Lackey began the last two seasons on the Los Angeles Angels disabled list. … Manager Don Zimmer, outfielders Jimmy Piersall and Tommy Harper and infielder John Valentin were named to the Red Sox Hall of Fame by a 14-member panel of team executives, media members, booster club representatives and historians.
