The myth of Pandora is very old, appears in several distinct versions, and has been interpreted in many ways. In all literary versions, however, the myth is a kind of theodicy, addressing the question of why there is evil in the world. Hesiod, both in his Theogony (briefly, without naming Pandora outright, line 570) and in Works and Days, ca. 700 BC, has a very early told and literary version of the Pandora story. In modern times, Pandora's Box has become a metaphor for the unanticipated consequences of technical and scientific development. The evidence of the vase-painters reveals another, earlier aspect of Pandora. 

Three goddesses, Athena, Hera and Aphrodite quarreled over a golden apple with a sign that it should belong to the most beautiful among them. No one wanted to take a task of choosing between three goddesses. Zeus therefore sent them off to Paris, son of Priam, king of Troy. Paris decided in favor of Aphrodite, who had promised him the most beautiful mortal woman, Helen, the wife of Menelaus. The Greek playwright Aeschylus called Helen 'destroyer of ships, destroyer of men, destroyer of cities'. The result of Paris' decision was the Trojan War. 

Priam was the king of Troy, famous because of the Trojan war. He was married twice. His second wife was Hecuba. He had many children, the most famous among them are: Paris, Hector, Cassandra, Ganymede. 

Hector the son of Priam and Hecuba. Although Priam was king of Troy, Hector held the real power. He was much loved by Trojans, who acknowledged him as the principal defender of the city. He was married to Andromache and had a little son by her. He was killed in the combat with Achilles.

트로이 왕 프리아모스와 그의 아내 헤카베 사이에서 태어난 아들이다. 그의 태몽은 불길한 전조로 해석되었기 때문에, 그는 갓난아기 때 집에서 벼려졌다. 가족은 그를 들판에 내버려 죽게 하려고 했지만, 곰이나 양치기들이 그를 거두어 키웠다. 그는 자라서 양치기가 되었지만, 부모는 그것을 알지 못했다. 젊은시절에 그는 트로이 축제의 권투 시합에 참가하여, 프리아모스의 다른 아들들을 무찔렀다. 그의 정체가 밝혀진 뒤, 프리아모스는 그를 다시 집으로 받아들였다. 

'파리스의 심판'은 예술에서 즐겨 다룬 인기있는 주제였고 지금도 마찬가지이다. 전설에 따르면, 제우스는 헤라·아테나·아프로디테 3명의 여신 가운데 누가 가장 아름다운가를 결정할 사람으로 파리스를 선택했다(→ 에리스). 헤라 여신은 그에게 왕의 권력을 주겠다고 제의했고 아테나 여신은 군사적인 능력을 주겠다고 제의했지만, 그는 이 두 여신의 제의를 거부하고 이 세상에 살아 있는 가장 아름다운 여인을 얻도록 도와주겠다는 아프로디테의 제의를 받아들여 아프로디테를 가장 아름다운 여신으로 선정했다. 그리하여 그가 헬레네(스파르타 왕 메넬라오스의 아내)를 유혹하여 가로채고 메넬라오스에게 돌려주기를 거부한 것은 트로이 전쟁의 원인이 되었다. 이 전쟁에서 파리스는 보조적인 역할밖에 맡지 않았던 것 같다. 그는 훌륭한 전사였지만, 형제인 헥토르나 그가 맞서 싸운 그리스 지도자들보다는 뛰어나지 못했다. 메넬라오스는 단 한번의 전투로 파리스를 물리칠 수 있었지만, 아프로디테가 파리스를 구해주었기 때문에 전쟁은 계속되었다. 전쟁이 끝날 무렵, 파리스가 쏜 화살이 아폴론 신의 도움으로 영웅 아킬레우스의 죽음을 초래했다. 파리스 자신도 그 직후에 명사수 필록테테스가 쏜 화살에 맞아 치명상을 입었다.
