‘한국형 핵잠수함’ 김병현이 8회 무사 만루 위기에서 팀을 건져낸 덕분에애리조나 다이아몬드백스가 창단 4년 만의 첫 월드시리즈 진출을 눈 앞에 뒀다. 

애리조나는 21일(한국시간) 터너필드에서 벌어진 애틀랜타 브레이브스와의내셔널리그 챔피언십시리즈(NLCS) 4차전에서 애틀랜타의 실책을 틈타 11-4로역전승,3승1패를 기록했다.애리조나는 22일 오전 9시 1차전 완봉 투수인 랜디 존슨을 내세워 5차전을 펼친다.여기서 이긴다면 아메리칸리그 우승팀과월드시리즈 패권을 놓고 7전4선승제의 경기를 펼친다.아메리칸리그는 뉴욕양키스가 시애틀 매리너스에 2승1패로 앞서 있다.애리조나가 월드시리즈에진출해 우승한다면 미국 프로스포츠 사상 신생팀으로는 최단 기간 우승 기록을 세우게 된다. 

김병현은 8회 무사 만루에서 미겔 바티스타를 구원해 마운드에 올랐다.7-3으로 앞선 8회 등판한 바티스타가 3연속 안타를 맞아 역전 위기에 놓이자 봅브렌리 감독은 김병현에게 긴급 구원을 요청했다. 

김병현은 2차전 결승홈런의 주인공인 하비 로페스에게 초구 145㎞짜리 직구를 힘차게 뿌렸다.로페스의 방망이가 돌았으나 2루수∼유격수∼1루수로 이어지는 병살타.3루 주자가 홈을 밟았지만 순식간에 투아웃이 됐고 김병현은 톱타자 마커스 자일스를 3루 직선타구로 잡아내 5개의 공으로 간단하게 팀을구했다. 

김병현은 11-4로 스코어가 벌어진 가운데 9회말 훌리오 프랑코를 1루 파울플라이,치퍼 존스를 1루땅볼,브라이언 조던을 중견수플라이로 잡고 간단하게경기를 끝냈다.2이닝 동안 5타자를 퍼펙트로 막아냈다.투구수 15개(스트라이크 10개). 

이로써 김병현은 세인트루이스와의 디비전시리즈 3차전에서 한국선수로는 처음 메이저리그 포스트시즌 세이브를 기록한데 이어 챔피언십시리즈에서도 세이브를 따내 동양인 최초의 월드시리즈 등판이 초읽기에 들어갔다.포스트시즌 3연속경기 무실점을 기록했다. 

애리조나 '1승 남았다'...시애틀 2패 뒤 첫승 

애리조나 다이아몬드백스가 적지에서 애틀랜타를 연거푸 격파해 월드시리즈진출을 눈앞에 두게됐다.애리조나는 21일(한국시간) 터너필드에서 벌어진 내셔널리그 챔피언십시리즈 4차전에서 타선의 고른 활약과 상대실책에 편승,11­-4로 대승했다.전날 커트 실링의 완투를 앞세워 5-1로 승리한 애리조나는 3승1패로 월드시리즈 진출에 1승만 남겨놓게 됐다. 

아메리칸리그 챔피언십시리즈 3차전에서는 시애틀이 홈런 3방등 장단 15안타를 몰아치며 뉴욕 양키스를 14-3으로 대파하고 적지서 1승을 거두며 1승2패로 기사회생했다. 

■애리조나-애틀랜타(21일·터너필드) 

애리조나는 2-0으로 뒤지던 3회 상대실책 3개와 집중 4안타를 묶어 4-2로 역전에 성공했다.1사 만루서 스티브 핀리의 투수강습 직선타구를 애틀랜타 투수 그레그 매덕스가 잡다가 놓친뒤 다시 잡아 홈으로 던졌으나 악송구가 됐다.이 사이 크레이그 카운셀과 루이스 곤살레스가 홈을 밟아 2-2동점을 만들었다.계속된 1사 2·3루서 매트 윌리엄스와 마크 그레이스의 연속안타로 2점을 더 뽑아 4-2로 앞서나갔다. 

기세가 산 애리조나는 4회에도 무사 2·3루서 크레이그 카운셀의 2타점 좌월2루타로 6-2로 점수차를 더 벌렸다. 

애틀랜타는 8회 무사 만루의 찬스를 만들며 추격의 의지를 불태웠으나 미겔바티스타를 구원해 마운드에 오른 김병현이 하비 로페스를 2루수 병살타로막고 다음타자 마커스 자일스도 3루수 직선타로 잡아내 불을 껐다. 

3차전에서는 애리조나 선발투수 커트 실링이 9이닝을 12탈삼진을 곁들이며 4안타 1실점으로 막는 괴력을 선보였다.올 포스트시즌에서만 3연속 완투승을기록한 그는 93년 월드시리즈 5차전 완봉승까지 포함하면 자신의 포스트시즌4연속경기 완투승.

■시애틀-뉴욕 양키스(21일·양키스타디움) 

홈에서 2연패를 당하며 무거운 발걸음으로 뉴욕으로 횡단한 시애틀은 4회까지 상대선발 오를란도 에르난데스에 1안타로 눌리며 2-0으로 뒤져 자칫 3연패로 몰릴 듯한 분위기였다. 

그러나 배수의 진을 친 시애틀의 방망이는 2-0으로 뒤진 5회부터 대폭발을일으켰다.5회초 브렛 분의 2타점 2루타로 동점을 만든 뒤 6회초 존 올러루드의 결승솔로포를 신호탄으로 5안타 2볼넷 상대실책 1개를 묶어 대거 7득점하며 승부를 갈랐다. 

6회초 선두타자 올러루드가 우측 관중석 상단을 때리는 대형홈런을 쏘아올린뒤 스탠 하비에르의 중전안타와 마이크 카메론의 볼넷으로 무사 1·2루의찬스를 잡으며 분위기를 이어갔다. 

양키스는 즉각 선발투수 에르난데스를 내리고 이번 포스트시즌 방어율 0.97의 불펜 에이스 마이크 스탠턴을 마운드에 올렸다.그러나 스탠턴이 실책을범하면서 양키스는 돌아올 수 없는 강을 건너고 말았다.대타 댄 윌슨의 번트타구를 스탠턴이 3루쪽을 겨냥하며 욕심을 부리다 악송구가 돼 2루주자가 득점하고 다시 무사 2·3루.1사후 스즈키 이치로의 고의4구로 만든 1사 만루에서 마크 매클모어가 3루타를 터뜨리며 3명의 주자를 모두 불러들였고,이어브렛 분이 바뀐투수 마크 월러스를 상대로 투런홈런을 날리면서 양키스의 기를 죽였다. 

7회초 2점,8회초 1점을 뽑은 시애틀은 9회초 제이 뷰너의 솔로홈런과 올러루드의 좌전적시타로 2점을 추가하며 방망이 잔치를 마무리했다. 

브렛 분은 아메리칸리그 챔피언십시리즈 한 경기 최다타점 타이인 5타점을기록하며 그동안의 부진에서 벗어났다.이치로는 고의4구 1개를 포함해 볼넷2개를 얻고 3타수 2안타 1도루 2득점을 기록해 포스트시즌 8연속경기 안타행진을 이어갔다. 

올 시즌 20승을 올린 시애틀 선발 제이미 모이어는 1회말 버니 윌리엄스에게투런홈런을 허용한 이후 무실점 역투를 펼쳤다.시속 140㎞도 안되는 볼이었지만 자로잰듯한 컨트롤과 타이밍을 뺏는 절묘한 체인지업으로 7이닝동안 4안타 1볼넷 5탈삼진 2실점으로 승리투수가 됐다.디비전시리즈에서 2승을 수확한 모이어는 포스트시즌에서만 3승을 챙겨 시애틀의 구세주로 떠올랐다.‘가을사나이’로 이름을 날리던 양키스 선발 오를란도 에르난데스는 5이닝 5실점(4자책점)으로 패전투수가 돼 포스트시즌 통산 9승2패를 마크했다. 

22일 펼쳐지는 4차전에는 로저 클레멘스(양키스)와 폴 애보트(시애틀)가 선발투수로 예고됐다.

김병현은 21일(이하 한국시간) 애틀랜타의 터너필드에서 열린 애틀랜타 브레이브스와의 미국프로야구 내셔널리그 챔피언십시리즈 4차전에서 7-3으로 앞서던 8회말 무사 만루의 위기에서 등판해 2이닝 동안 무안타, 무실점으로 팀 승리를 지켰다. 

8회말 김병현의 호투로 1점만 내준 애리조나는 9회초 4점을 보태 11-4의 대승을 거두며 7전4선승제의 승부에서 3승1패로 대망의 월드시리즈 진출에 1승을 남겼다. 

지난 13일 세인트루이스 카디널스와의 디비전시리즈에서 1세이브를 거둔 김병현도 자신의 포스트시즌 2번째 세이브로 `꿈의 무대'를 향해 한걸음 더 다가섰다. 

김병현은 이날 힘있는 안정된 투구로 `작인 거인'의 위력을 확실하게 보여줬다. 

8회말 등판한 미구엘 바티스타가 연속 3안타를 맞은 뒤 무사 만루에서 마운드를넘겨 받은 김병현은 첫 타자인 하비 로페스에게서 2루수-유격수-1루수로 이어지는병살타를 유도, 3루 주자에게만 홈을 내주고 아웃 카운트를 2개로 늘려 급한 불을껐다. 

김병현은 이어 마커스 자일스를 3루 직선 타구로 간단하게 처리, 8회말을 끝냈고 애리조나 타선은 9회초 2사 이후 루이스 곤잘레스의 3점 홈런 등으로 4점을 뽑아김병현의 어깨를 가볍게 했다. 

9회초 타석에 들어서 2루 땅볼로 물러난 김병현은 9회말 마운드에서 국내 프로야구 삼성에서 뛰었었던 훌리오 프랑코를 1루수 파울 플라이로, 치퍼 존스를 1루수땅볼로, 브라이언 조던을 중견수 플라이로 각각 처리하고 경기를 마무리했다. 

사이영상에 빛나는 애틀랜타의 선발 그레그 매덕스는 3이닝 동안 8안타, 6실점하며 패전투수가 돼 포스트시즌 부진을 거듭했다. 

아메리칸리그챔피언십시리즈에서는 2연패로 위기에 몰렸던 시애틀이 양키스타디움에서 벌어진 3차전에서 5타수 3안타, 5타점을 터뜨린 브렛 분의 맹타로 뉴욕 양키스에 14-3의 역전승을 거두고 반격에 나섰다. 

애리조나와 애틀랜타, 시애틀과 양키스는 22일 각각 5차전과 4차전을 치른다. 

◆내셔널리그 챔피언십시리즈(애리조나 11-4 애틀랜타) 

실책과 마무리에서 승부가 갈렸다. 

애리조나는 12안타로 11점을 뽑고 8회말 무사 만루의 위기에서 마무리 김병현의특급 구원과 실책 없는 수비로 원정 2연승을 거둘 수 있었다. 

하지만 애틀랜타는 13안타를 치고도 4점을 얻는데 그쳤고 4개의 실책으로 어이없이 무너졌을 뿐만 아니라 9회초 등판한 마무리 제이슨 마퀴스가 대량 실점, 추격의 여지까지 잃었다. 

애리조나는 0-2로 뒤지던 3회초 안타 4개와 상대 실책 3개로 4점을 얻어 승부를뒤집고 4회초 크레이그 카운셀의 2타점 2루타로 6-2의 리드를 잡아 승기를 잡았다. 

◆아메리칸리그 챔피언십시리즈(시애틀 14-3 양키스) 

동점포와 쐐기포를 터뜨린 분의 방망이가 빛났다. 

1회말 양키스의 버니 윌리엄스에게 2점 홈런을 내준 시애틀은 5회초 2사 만루에서 분의 2타점 적시타로 동점을 만고고 6회초 존 올로루드의 1점 역전 홈런으로 3-2의 리드를 잡았다. 

시애틀은 계속된 6회초 꾸준하게 점수차를 벌려 7-2로 앞서간 뒤 분의 2점 홈런으로 9-2까지 달아나 승부에 쐐기를 박았다. 

김병현, 동양인 첫 월드시리즈 선다 

애리조나 현재 3승1패…이치로와 '보이지 않는 경쟁' 
누가 먼저 밟을 것인가. 

‘한국산 핵잠수함’ 김병현(22ㆍ애리조나 다이아몬드백스)과 일본의 영웅 스즈키 이치로(28ㆍ시애틀 매리너스)가 아시아 선수 최초의 ‘꿈의 무대’ 월드시리즈 출장을 위해 보이지 않는 경쟁을 펼치고 있다. 

김병현의 애리조나는 20일(이하 한국시간)터너 필드에서 열린 애틀랜타 브레이브스와의 내셔널리그 챔피언십 시리즈 4차전에서 11-4로 승리, 종합전적 3승1패를 기록, 월드시리즈 진출에 유리한 고지를 점령했다. 

앞으로 애리조나는 남은 3경기에서 1승만 추가하면 팀 창단 후 처음으로 대망의 월드시리즈에 진출할 수 있게 된다. 

앞으로 메이저리그 최고의 ‘원투펀치’인 랜디 존슨과 커트 실링이 각각 한 번씩 등판할 예정이어서 월드시리즈에 올라갈 가능성이 높다. 

이치로의 시애틀도 2연패 끝에21일 원정경기에서 뉴욕 양키스에 14_3으로 대승, 종합전적 1승 2패를 기록하며 월드시리즈 진출 희망을 되살렸다. 

시애틀에는 일본인 마무리 투수 사사키(33)도 버티고 있어 김병현과 누가 먼저 월드시리즈 마운드를 정복하느냐도 관심거리다. 

따라서 두 팀 중 어느 팀이 월드시리즈에 올라가느냐에 따라 한국의 김병현, 일본의 이치로와 사사키 중에서 아시아 선수 최초의 월드시리즈 출장자가 나오게 된다. 

과연 누가 메이저리그 역사에 새로운 발자취를 남기는 아시아 선수가 될지 관심사다. 

김병현은 올 시즌 초 월드시리즈 마운드에한 번 서보고 싶다는 포부를 밝힌 바 있는데 꿈이 현실로 다가오고 있는 것이다. 

이제까지 월드시리즈에 출전한 동양선수는 없다. 현재로선 김병현이 첫 주인공으로 탄생할 가능성이 약간 높다. 김병현의 애리조나는 2승 1패로 앞서 있는데 반해 시애틀은 관록의 양키스에 밀리고 있는 형국이기 때문이다. 

김병현은 팀의 월드시리즈 진출에 대해서는“여기까지 왔는데 월드시리즈에 가야하지 않겠느냐”며 “양키스는 한 번도 붙어 보지 않았지만 신경 쓰지 않는다. 마운드에서의 감에 따라 양키스 타자들을 상대할 작정이다”고 밝혔다. 

한편 김병현이 월드시리즈에 올라가기만하면 최소 20만 달러에서 최대 30만 달러까지의 보너스를 받게 된다. 부와 명예가 김병현을 기다리고 있다. 
 

ATLANTA (TICKER) -- On three days' rest, Greg Maddux and the Atlanta Braves looked tired and sloppy. One more loss and they will have the whole offseason to rest. 

Maddux pitched poorly and got no help from his defense in his shortest postseason outing and Craig Counsell remained red-hot with three hits and four RBI as the Arizona Diamondbacks posted an 11-4 triumph over the Braves in Game Four of the National League Championship Series. 

The four-time Cy Young Award winner did nothing to remove his tag as a poor postseason performer. In three-plus innings, Maddux (0-2) was tagged for six runs -- four earned -- and eight hits.

Maddux surrendered a two-run lead, fell to 10-13 in postseason play and remained winless since August 21 -- a span of 10 starts. Over that span, his ERA is 4.11, but none of Maddux's previous outings were as crucial as Saturday's. 

After Curt Schilling stymied the Braves on Friday in Game Three, Maddux and Atlanta failed to draw even in a game in which Arizona started 19-game loser Albie Lopez. 

Lopez lasted just three innings, allowing single runs in the first and second. Brian Anderson (1-0) picked up the win, yielding a run and four hits in 3 1/3 innings before Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly began piecing together the final three innings. 

Mike Morgan and Greg Swindell each got an out, but Miguel Batista struggled in the eighth. Closer Byung-Hyun Kim came on to record the final six outs for his second postseason save. 

The Braves face a must-win situation Sunday against overpowering 21-game winner Randy Johnson, who struck out 11 in a three-hit shutout in Game One. 

Arizona has won five straight games at Turner Field, outscoring Atlanta, 35-7. 

"Our team is excited now," Diamondbacks left fielder Luis Gonzalez said. "We've got one of our two-headed horsemen going tomorrow. We are nine innings away. ... We are kind of a blue collar ballclub, we are not going to take them lightly. We know what their club is capable of doing." 

"It isn't going to be easy, that is for sure," Arizona first baseman Mark Grace added. "I don't think you are ever going to see Greg Maddux -- for lack of a better phrase -- bow out like that. To our credit, we took advantage of their miscues." 

If Atlanta is looking for some positives, it can take solace in the fact it has rallied from a 3-1 deficit before in the NLCS. In 1996, the Braves erased a similar deficit against the St. Louis Cardinals, but the final two games of that series were in Atlanta. 

"Don't give up on us," Braves third baseman Chipper Jones said. "Come out and support us tomorrow tonight. We beat Randy Johnson once this year. It can't get any worse than it did tonight." 

"We've been in this position against the Cards before and we have played good baseball," Maddux added. "We've got to win. We've been there before." 

Maddux ran into trouble immediately but stranded runners at second and third when Steve Finley lined out to shallow right. The Braves seemed poised to capitalize on the momentum swing as Jones launched an RBI double to the right-center field gap in the bottom of the first inning. 

Andruw Jones opened the bottom of the second with his second postseason homer. But things began to fell apart for Maddux and the Braves in the third. 

Tony Womack reach on an error by Chipper Jones but was caught stealing. Counsell reached on a throwing error by shortstop Rey Sanchez and took third on a single by Gonzalez. Reggie Sanders followed with a comebacker that was fielded by Maddux, an 11-time Gold Glove winner. Maddux appeared to have Counsell trapped off third base, but Chipper Jones was late getting to the bag and the bases were loaded. 

"My first instinct is to break to the ball," Chipper Jones explained. "So I broke left. Once I broke left, I can't get back in time. I would have liked to have seen Greg pump-fake to third and throw to first. It seemed like Counsell got off just far enough to get Greg to go after him." 

Finley took advantage of the mental lapse by lining a pitch back through the box that Maddux got a glove on. As he scrambled to recover, Maddux fired a bullet just wide of the plate and catcher Paul Bako failed to make a play, allowing Counsell and Gonzalez to score. Matt Williams and Grace followed with RBI singles for a 4-2 lead. 

"We're playing like the `Bad News Bears` out there," Braves right fielder Brian Jordan said. "We gave two games away, I feel. You give teams four or five outs an inning, you shouldn't expect to win. It was embarrassing today. It was really embarrassing to get this far and all of a sudden, you can't play defense and you are making mental lapses." 

"You screw up, you ain't got no excuses," Sanchez added. "That's the bottom line. I guess we're trying to do too much out there. They still gotta win one more. This team is capable of winning three in a row." 

Maddux tried to explain his thought process during the inning, first about the ball off his glove, then about the comebacker. 

"You don't expect to throw the ball away. When I threw the ball away, I was shocked," he said. "(On Sanders' comebacker), I didn't want to throw into third. I had to look Counsell back and I didn't feel like I had a play at home and it didn't work out. If I had to do it over again, I would try to sell the play at second." 

The Diamondbacks appeared stunned by the display of poor fielding and baseball sense. 

"I don't know if you will ever see Rey Sanchez make two errors in a game or Greg Maddux make poor decisions," Grace said. "But they did and we took advantage of it. That's to our credit. Sometimes the unexplainable happens and you have to kick the door in." 

"I've marveled at Greg Maddux as a player, as a coach, as a broadcaster and now as a manager -- his ability to help himself by fielding his position. It was just so out of character to see the plays that happened tonight that there's no way you could predict that," Brenly said. "There's no way you could expect that. I think the way this postseason has gone, we can expect the unexpected." 

Atlanta put two runners on in the bottom of the third, but Lopez retired Andruw Jones on a line drive to first. Maddux was responsible for his own mess in the fourth. 

Pinch hitter David Dellucci opened the inning with a single, Womack doubled to left and Counsell made it 6-2 with a double to left. That finished Maddux and Mike Remlinger prevented any further damage. 

Anderson took over for Lopez in the fourth and allowed a leadoff double to Sanchez before walking pinch hitter Bernard Gilkey. But Javy Lopez popped out and rookie Marcus Giles bounced into an inning-ending double play. 

Atlanta got within 6-3 in the seventh. Giles and Julio Franco strung together one-out singles and Morgan replaced Anderson. The veteran righthander caught Chipper Jones looking at a third strike but surrendered an RBI single to Jordan. With the tying run at the plate, Swindell got B.J. Surhoff -- who homered off the veteran lefthander in Game Two -- on a popout to second. 

"Last time didn't matter," Swindell said. "Today would have tied the game. I made a pitch and he popped it up." 

The Diamondbacks pushed across an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI double by Counsell, but Atlanta got within 7-4 in the bottom of the inning. 

Andruw Jones, Sanchez and pinch hitter Dave Martinez opened the eighth with singles and Brenly turned to Kim, who got Javy Lopez to bounce into a double play before getting Giles on a line drive to third. 

"I swung as hard as I could," Javy Lopez said. "It got in on me for a double play. Nobody wants to make mistakes, but we made four mistakes that cost us." 

"It was the most exciting moment of the game," Kim said. "I threw the ball where I wanted to. I got the double play ball. I threw the ball as hard as I could and got the results I wanted." 

Arizona ended any final comeback hopes Atlanta may have had with four runs in the ninth. Counsell had an RBI single and Gonzalez hit his second postseason homer for an 11-4 cushion.
