9회말 무사 1, 2루의 위기에도 애리조나 다이아몬드백스 불펜에는 아무도 없었다. 

밥 브렌리 감독은 김병현을 신뢰했고 김병현은 세이브로 보답했다. 

13일(한국시간) 세인트루이스 카디널스와의 디비전시리즈 3차전에 등판한 김병현이 메이저리그 진출후 처음으로 포스트시즌 세이브를 따냈다. 

한국선수로는 최초. 

김병현은 5-3으로 앞선 8회말 2사 주자 1, 2루의 위기에서 급하게 마운드에 올랐다. 

채 몸도 풀리지 않은 상태에서 등판한 탓인지 긴장한 표정이 역력했다. 

자칫하면 한 방으로 끝날 수도 있는 상황. 

첫 타자는 올시즌 센세이션의 앨버트 푸홀스였다. 

제구력이 잡히지 않아 고생하던 김병현은 푸홀스에게 5구만에 볼 넷을 내줬고 최대의 위기를 맞았다. 

2사 만루의 상황에서 만나 타자는 4회 투런홈런을 친 짐 에드몬즈. 

1구 볼을 던져 스트라익이 반드시 필요한 상황에서 던진공은 복판직구였다. 

에드몬즈는 놓치지 않고 배트를 휘둘렀으나 공의 위력에 밀려 중견수 플라이로 아웃. 

위기에서 탈출했다. 

그러나 위기는 9회말 다시 찾아왔다. 

김병현은 첫 타자 케리 로빈슨에 기습번트 안타를 맞았고 에드가 렌테리아에게 볼 넷을 내줬다. 

무사 1, 2루. 

그러나 마이크 매서니를 삼진으로 처리한 김병현은 자신감을 찾았고 대타로 나온 마크 맥과이어를 병살타로 처리해 팀의 귀중한 승리를 지켜냈다. 

5-3 승리. 

그간 경험부족으로 등판에 어려움을 겪었던 김병현은 세이브와 함께 팀의 승리를 지켜 남은 경기에 자신감을 얻을 것으로 보인다. 

김병현의 세이브에 힘입은 다이아몬드백스는 시리즈전적 2승 1패로 앞서게 됐고 챔피언십까지 1승만이 남아있다. 

김병현 빅맥잡고 PS 첫 세이브  

'한국형 핵잠수함' 김병현이 한국인 최초로 메이저리그 포스트시즌 마운드에 올라 내셔널리그에서 동양인으로선 처음으로 세이브를 올리는 영광을안았다. 

김병현은 13일(이하 한국시간) 세인트루이스 카디널스의 홈 구장 부시 스타디움에서 열린 세이트루이스와의 디비전시리즈 3차전에서 8회 등판 1⅓이닝 동안 1안타 2볼넷을 내주었지만 무실점으로 막아냈다. 

애리조나의 선발 바티스타는 6이닝 동안 3안타 2실점으로 임무를 다하고마운드를 내려왔다. 

이어 앤더슨과 모건이 이어던지고 8회 2사후 1, 2루의위기가 오자 애리조나 브렌리 감독은 주저없이 김병현을 마운드에 올렸다. 

김병현은 첫 타자에게 볼넷을 허용 2사 만루의 위기를 맞았으나 후속 짐에드몬스를 외야플라이로 잡아내며 이닝을 마무리했다. 

김병현은 마지막 이닝인 9회말 첫타자에게 기습번트 내야안타를 허용해 불안하게 출발했다. 

이에 다소 흔들린듯 제구력 난조를 보이며 후속타자를볼넷으로 내보내 무사 1, 2루의 위기를 자초했다. 

그러나 후속타자를 위력적인 투구로 삼진으로 잡아내고 대타로 나온 홈런타자 맥과이어를 맞았다. 

김병현은 침착하게 땅볼을 유도해 병살타로 경기를 마무리했다. 

애리조나 다이아몬드백스는 카운셀의 3점포를 앞세워 5-3으로 승리했다. 

1-2로 뒤지던 7회초 대거 4득점하며 역전에 성공했다. 

이로써 애리조나는2승1패로 우위를 점하며 내셔널리그 챔시언십시리즈 진출을 1승만을 남겨두게 되었다. 

애리조나와 세인트루이스의 디비전시리즈 4차전 경기는 14일 새벽 2시에열린다. 
 

ST. LOUIS (TICKER) -- Craig Counsell is comfortable in the spotlight. Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly had no doubt Miguel Batista would shine in it. 

After Batista gave the Diamondbacks six solid innings, light-hitting Craig Counsell hit a tie-breaking three-run homer off Mike Matthews in the seventh as Arizona edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-3 and took a two games to one lead in their National League Division Series. 

Brenly made a couple of moves prior to Friday's Game Three, including going with Batista over veterans Albie Lopez and Bobby Witt, and each move seemed to pay off. Batista (1-0), facing additional pressure after the failure of Cy Young Award favorite Randy Johnson in Game Two, allowed two runs and three hits in his first career postseason start. 

"I never feel fear," Batista admitted. "I've never been brave, because I never defeated anything, but there comes a point in time in your career when you don't feel the butterflies in your stomach." 

"Miguel, as he done pretty much all season long, he gave us what we needed tonight," Brenly said. "We don't expect him to go out there and throw nine innings. We don't expect him to shut the other team out completely, but we do expect him to keep us in the ballgame. ... He made some great pitches in tough situations. And I didn't see him rattled or lose his poise out there one time during that ballgame tonight." 

Batista left trailing 2-1 but Arizona got even on an RBI single by pinch hitter Greg Colbrunn and took the lead two batters later when Counsell -- no stranger to postseason heroics -- lofted a three-run homer over the right-field wall. 

"Well, it was a great feeling," Counsell said. "I don't know if -- it's not the World Series -- but you know it was a big hit for us. It was a huge hit for us, so it's right there. It was one of my top two thrills, I'll give you that." 

"He's been our unsung hero," said Diamondbacks left fielder Luis Gonzalez, himself a Most Valuable Player candidate. "He's been our Most Valuable Player. Everybody else, we all get the notoriety being the frontline guys. This guy goes out there and grinds for us every day. He does whatever he has to do. He's our little scrap iron guy. He goes out there and does the job for us." 

The Cardinals chipped away with a run in the bottom of seventh and had the bases loaded in the eighth when Diamondbacks closer Byung-Hyun Kim retired Jim Edmonds, who homered earlier, on a long drive to center field. 

"It was frustrating, bases loaded and two outs," Edmonds said. "It's probably the most frustrating at-bat of my career." 

St. Louis kept the pressure on in the ninth, putting two aboard with none out. But Mike Matheny failed to get down a bunt and pinch hitter Mark McGwire hit into a game-ending double play. 

The victory moves the Arizona Diamondbacks within one win of their first NL Championship Series. The club, in its fourth year of existence, can close out the series with a win in Game Four on Saturday. 

The Diamondbacks are slated to start Lopez -- a 19-game loser -- while St. Louis counters with 21-year-old rookie lefthander Bud Smith, who pitched a no-hitter just over a month ago. 

"We have to play better," Edmonds said. "We have to score runs when we get a chance. We need to take advantage and get some big hits. I think we are better than the way we are playing right now. We are swinging at a lot of bad pitches and doing a lot of things that are uncharacteristic." 

Brenly's decision to bat Counsell second was another move that proved masterful. St. Louis manager Tony La Russa had a couple of moves backfire on him. 

La Russa's decision-making process came into question when starter Darryl Kile issued a leadoff walk to Matt Williams in the seventh. The Cardinals manager pulled Kile and turned to Matthews, a lefthander who was making his postseason debut. 

Steve Finley bunted into a forceout but Damian Miller singled into left-center field to put runners at the corners. Colbrunn pinch-hit for Batista and La Russa left Matthews in. Colbrunn promptly singled into left-center to tie the game. 

Another righthanded batter, Tony Womack grounded to second and Miller was cut down at the plate. La Russa stayed with Matthews against Counsell, who batted .337 against lefthanders, and the Diamondbacks second baseman lofted a three-run homer over the right-field wall for a 5-2 lead. 

"I've faced those guys before. It was nothing new, I just fell behind a couple of guys," Matthews said. "I came back and made some decent pitches trying to salvage the inning. What happened to Counsell, that just wasn't in my plans. I made a bad pitch." 

La Russa explained his thought process. 

"That would have been a bad time to make a move," La Russa said of pulling Matthews against Colbrunn. "You bring in a righthander and you are going to face one of their lefthanders. And three lefthanders after that. 

"You have to get Counsell out to end the inning. Lefthanders hit .130 against him. He fell behind him and he threw him a strike. Give Counsell credit." 

Counsell had the game-tying sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and scored the winning run in the 11th for the Florida Marlins in Game Seven of the 1997 World Series. 

"The first postseason I was in I had some success," Counsell said. "I've had success in these situations before, and I think it just makes it easier when you get to the situation again because you've had success and you've been there and you've seen what it's like. 

"I think that if anything has been the reason -- you know it gives you confidence, any time you have success in a situation, you're going to have confidence the next time you do it." 

St. Louis got back a run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer by Edgar Renteria. Coincidentally, it was Renteria's base hit in that seventh game in 1997 that scored Counsell. 

Former Cardinal Mike Morgan relieved Brian Anderson to start the eighth and allowed a single to pinch hitter Miguel Cairo. Cairo stole second but Morgan retired the next two batters. J.D. Drew walked and Brenly turned to the erratic Kim, who promptly walked rookie slugger Albert Pujols. After falling behind Edmonds 1-0, Kim caught a break when the St. Louis center fielder lined to Danny Bautista in center field. 

After Steve Kline pitched out of a jam in the top of the ninth, the Cardinals seemed poised to tie the game when pinch hitter Kerry Robinson beat out a bunt and Renteria drew a walk. But Matheny bunted foul twice and took a called third strike. 

La Russa hoped to win the game with one swing of the bat and sent up McGwire -- the active leader in home runs -- to pinch-hit. But McGwire fell behind in the count and hit a grounder that Williams fielded, stepped on third and fired across the diamond to get the injured slugger easily. 

Kile opened the game in impressive fashion, striking out five straight batters after issuing a leadoff walk to Womack. Counsell stranded two batters in the third and saw a potential rally cut short in the fourth. 

Mark Grace and Williams drew two-out walks and Finley grounded a single up the middle. Grace attempted to score on the play but was thrown out easily by center fielder Edmonds. 

Edmonds made his presence felt in the bottom of the inning as well. Placido Polanco led off with a single and stole second. After a groundout by Pujols moved Polanco to third, Edmonds lined a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right-center field for a 2-0 lead. 

"The home run was not a bad pitch," Batista said. "I was just trying to stay up because he is a good low ball hitter. He just got the best part of it." 

Arizona finally broke through against Kile in the top of the sixth as Gonzalez launched a solo homer off the right-field foul pole for his first hit of the series.

2사 만루 무사 1·2루에 맥과이어까지. 고비에 고비를 넘고 세이브를 따낸 김병현은 목이 타는지 제대로 말을 잇지 못했다. 

26개를 던지고도 “한 40개 정도 던졌냐”고 물을 만큼 숨막히는 순간의 연속. 그래도 “세인트루이스 팬에게 미안하네요. 한참 재미있으려고 하는데 끝내서”라고 농담할 여유는 남아 있었다. 

―8회와 9회 연속 볼넷을 내줘 힘든 경기를 했다. 

▲ 기분도 좋았고 다 좋았는데 템포가 좀 빨랐다. 

한 템포 죽여서 맞혀잡아야 되는데 너무 자신이 있어 공격적으로 가다 보니 계속 같은 템포로만 던졌다. 

한국인 첫 포스트시즌 등판이라고 하는데 솔직히 아무런 느낌이 없었다. 

―8회 2사 만루에서 에드먼즈 타구는 꽤 잘 맞았다. 

▲ 초구 직구를 던졌다가 직구를 노릴 것 같아 2구째는 몸쪽으로 슬라이더를 던졌다. 

크게 날아갔지만 던진 다음에 바로 ‘잡았구나’ 느낌이 왔다. 

공격적으로 던지려고 했다. 

아무 생각없이 내가 던지고 싶은 데로 던지는 게 가장 좋지 ‘이거 던지면 맞을 텐데’ 생각하면 분명히 맞는다. 

―9회 무사 1·2루에서 번트를 안 대주고 삼진을 잡은 게 좋았다. 

▲ 번트를 대주려고 그랬다. 

맞더라도 한 점만 주고 두 점은 절대 안 주겠다고 생각했다. 

도루를 하든 폭투가 나든 신경 안쓰고 다음 타자랑 정면 승부해서 삼진을 잡거나 아니면 희생 플라이로 한 점 주더라도 투아웃에서 그 다음 타자 잡아서 끝낸다고 생각했다. 

―마크 맥과이어와의 대결은. 

▲ 맥과이어가 요즘 스윙이 안 좋고 배트 스피드가 좀 늦은 것 같아서 정면 승부로 빠르게 빠르게 갔다. 

마지막에는 가운데 직구를 던졌는데 공이 잘 채져 몸쪽으로 휘어져 들어갔다. 

―오늘 피칭을 스스로 총평하면. 

▲ 100점 주겠다. 

게임을 이겼으니까. 하지만 이제 시작이다. 

내일도 던질 거다. 

갈 때까지 가보는 거다. 
 

▲ 밥 브렌리(애리조나 감독)=(8회 좌타자 드루를 상대하기 위해 좌완 스윈델을 내지 않은 이유에 대해선) 모건이 드루를 볼넷으로 내보내더라도 푸홀스 타석에 김병현을 넣어 삼진을 잡으면 된다고 생각했다. 

동점 주자가 누상에 나갔지만 그 시점에선 그게 최선의 방책이라고 생각했다. 

업슛(솟아오르는 커브)이 말을 안들어 애를 먹은 것 같다. 

언더핸드 폼으로 솟아오르는 그 공을 던지면 많은 타자들이 헛스윙을 하는데 오늘은 스트라이크존에 넣지를 못했다. 

▲ 토니 라루사(세인트루이스 감독)=에드몬즈는 정말 잘 쳤는데 약간 공의 밑부분을 맞았다. 

매터니는 우리 팀에서 제일 번트를 잘 대는 타자인데 확실히 김병현은 번트 대기 힘든 투수다. 

김병현 승부처 132km 슬라이더 

카디널스를 상대로 김병현이 세이브를 올릴 수 있었던 것은 8회말 2사 만루에서짐 에드먼즈를 상대로 슬라이더를 구사, 중견수 플라이로 잡아낸 것이 결정적이었다. 
김병현은 등판하자 마자 알버트 푸홀스에게 볼넷을 내줘 2사 만루를 만들어 주었다. 

그리고 맞선 타자가 바로 에드먼즈. 

4회 2점 홈런을 터뜨린 바있는 에드먼즈와 맞붙은 김병현은 초구는 몸쪽 직구(146㎞)를 구사했다. 

2구는 132㎞짜리 슬라이더. 

이것이 승부의 갈림길이었다. 

몸쪽 슬라이더에 에드먼즈의 방망이는 돌아갔고 중견수 뜬공으로잡아냈다. 

이에대해 김병현은 “공에 힘이 있었기 때문에 에드먼즈가 직구를 노리고 있다고 생각, 슬라이더로 유인한 것이 주효했다. 

맞는 순간 잡혔구나라고 생각했다”라고 설명했다. 

만약 에드먼즈가 투스트라이크 이후까지 공을 기다렸다면 김병현은 상당히 힘든 상황을 맞을 수 있었다. 

앞 타자를 볼넷으로 내보내주었던 것에서볼수 있었듯이 이날 컨트롤에 애를 먹었기 때문이다. 

춤추는 공 빅맥도 병살타 

◆…9회말 1사 1,2루에서 맥과이어를 3루앞 병살타로 처리, 경기를 마무리 짓는 순간 김병현은 오른 주먹을 허공에 휘두르며 승리의 기쁨을 맛보았다. 

마크 그레이스등 동료들도 달려와 김병현의 머리와 엉덩이를 두드리며 무실점으로 승리를 지켜낸 것을 축하했다. 
 

◆…김병현이 마크 맥과이어를 상대로 아웃카운트를 기록한것은 메이저리그 데뷔 후 처음이다. 

그동안 김병현은 맥과이어를 두번 상대했지만 모두볼넷을 허용했다. 
 

◆…이날 경기에 등판함으로써 김병현은 아시아 선수로는 6번째로 메이저리그 포스트시즌에 출장한 선수가 됐다. 

그동안 노모 히데오(1995년 96년)-요시이 마사토(99년)-이라부히데키(99년)-사사키 가즈히로(2000년)-이치로 스즈키(2001년) 등이 포스트시즌 경기에 출장했다. 

1996년 박찬호(LA 다저스)는 엔트리에는 포함됐지만 경기에는 출장하지 못했다. 
 

◆…김병현은 경기 후 “긴장하지 않고 재미있는 경기”였다고 자평했지만 동료들은 애간장이 탔다고 토로했다. 

1루수 그레이스는 “내 자신이 먼저침착하려고 노력했다. 

마치 내 속은 애기가 태어날 때처럼 초긴장 상태였다”며“김병현에게 다가가 스트라이크만 던지면 타자들이 칠수 없다고격려해 주었다”고 밝혔다. 
 

◆…포스트시즌 첫 한국인 출전 및 세이브를 기록한 13일 경기 마지막에사용된 공은 일단 김병현이 가지고 있다. 

김병현은 “경기가 끝난 후 1루수 그레이스가 건네줬다. 

홈 구장이었으면 관중석에 던져주었겠지만 원정경기여서 줄 관중이 없어 그냥 가지고 있다. 

어떻게 할지는 나도 모르겠다”고 말했다. 

◆…디비전시리즈 3차전에 등판한 김병현의 투구를 본 애리조나 지역 신문의 한 기자는 우스갯 소리로 “머지 않아 놀이공원에 김병현의 이름을딴 롤러코스터가 생길 것이다”고 소개했다. 

들쭉날쭉한 김병현의 공을 빗댄 말이다 

◆…김병현이 9회말 선두타자인 대타 캐리 로빈슨에게 내준 번트 안타는부시 스타디움에서 허용한 첫 안타였다. 

그동안 김병현은 3차례 부시 스타디움 경기에 나서 2⅔이닝을 던졌지만 볼넷 2개만 허용했을 뿐이다. 
 

◆… ESPN>과이날 경기를 전국에 생중계한 FOX TV는 김병현이 8회말짐 에드먼즈를 중견수 플라이로 잡아내는 것과 맥과이어를 병살타로 처리하는 장면을 잇달아 보여주며 호투를 칭찬했다.
