불어권에 속하는 나라인 세네갈은 ‘위험한 사나이’ 엘 하지 디우프를 앞세우고 용감무쌍하게 싸웠고, 프랑스를 전혀 두려워 하지 않는다는 것을 모두에게 보여 주었다. 프랑스는 전력을 다해서 싸웠으나 철통 같은 세네갈의 수비를 뚫지는 못했다. 특히 프랑스의 골잡이들이 시도한 슛은 두 번이나 아슬아슬하게 골대에 맞고 튕겨 나가서 세네갈의 브루노 메추 감독의 간담을 서늘하게 했다. 프랑스측의 아까운 실수의 반복이 결국 세네갈 팀에게는 행운을 가져다 주었다고 할 수 있겠다. 지단이 빠진 프랑스 팀은 역시 기력을 제대로 발휘하지 못한 듯 하다.  

전반전 

경기 초반 세네갈은 지난 1998 FIFA 월드컵™ 우승국 프랑스에 전혀 겁먹지 않은 모습이었다. 세네갈은 엘 하지 디우프가 엔드라인에서 수비수를 제치고 첫번째 득점 찬스를 얻어 냈고, 공을 칼릴루 파디가에게 밀어 넣어주었으나 슛이 짧아 프랑스 골키퍼 파비앙 바르테즈에게 그대로 갖다 주는 골이 되고 말았다.  

한편 프랑스는 전반 20분께 하프 찬스를 맞았다. 골키퍼 바르테즈가 펀트로 차 준 공이 득점왕 다비드 트레제게에게로 간 것이다. 하지만 유벤투스의 골잡이 트레제게가 찬 공은 실망스럽게도 세네갈 골키퍼 토니 실바가 손쉽게 막아냈다.  

3분 후, 프랑스는 트레제게가 페널티 구역에서 다시 득점 찬스를 마련했으나 안타깝게도 오른쪽 골대를 맞고 튕겨져 나갔다.  

한편 세네갈은 전반 중반쯤 이번 대회 첫 골을 터뜨려 프랑스를 놀라게 했다. 세네갈의 디우프는 수비수들을 따돌리고 왼쪽에서 골을 날렸다. 하지만 이내 공은 튕겨져 나오고 프랑스의 에마누엘 프티와 골피커 바르테즈가 우왕좌왕 하는 동안 파파 보우바 디오프가 바닥에 거의 누운 채로 가볍게 넣어 선취골을 기록했다. (0-1, 전반 30분)  

선취골을 세네갈에 내준 프랑스는 여러 위험한 순간을 연출해 냈으나 세네갈의 골키퍼 실바 선수의 능력을 테스트 해 볼만한 골다운 골은 찾아보기 힘들었다.  

후반전 

후반이 시작되면서 프랑스는 좋은 기회를 맞았다. 릴리앙 튀랑이 오른쪽 진영에서 올린 센터링을 받은 트레제게가 살짝 방향을 바꾸는 헤딩슛을 날려보았지만, 왼쪽 골포스트를 살짝 비껴 나갔다(후반 10분).  

곧 이어 프랑스는 더 확실한 기회를 맞았으나 또 한번 이 기회를 살리는데 실패하였다. 실뱅 윌토르가 오른쪽 진영에서 센터링을 올렸고 앙리가 이를 헤딩으로 밀어넣어 보려 했지만 공이 위로 떠버렸다. 그 다음으로 유리 조르카에프에게도 기회가 왔다. 그는 25미터 거리에서 중거리슛을 날려보았으나, 세네갈의 골키퍼 실바는 이를 막아냈고 다시 튀어 온 공까지 골 라인 밖으로 쳐냈다. 결국 프랑스는 코너킥을 얻는 것으로 만족해야 했다.  

코너킥으로 차 올린 공은 비에이라에게 이어졌고, 비에이라는 강하게 헤딩을 하면서 골을 노려보았지만 골키퍼 실바가 역시 멋지게 오른쪽으로 다이빙하면서 막아냈다(후반 13분).  

세네갈의 후반 첫 기회는 파디가에게 찾아왔고 그는 대포알 같은 슛을 10미터 거리에서 날려보았다. 하지만 아쉽게도 크로스바를 맞고 튀어나가면서 골킥이 되어버렸다(후반 20분). 그리고 바로 뒤이어 프랑스의 앙리가 달려들어오면서 슛을 날려보았지만 득점에는 실패하였다(후반 21분).  

수많은 기회를 득점으로 연결시키지 못한 것에 좌절한 듯, 프랑스 팀은 앙리가 좋은 기회를 놓친 후부터는 힘이 빠진 듯 경기 막바지까지 그럴 듯한 플레이를 보이지 못했다. 경기 종료 직전에야 앙리와 르뵈프가 각각 페널티 지역 안쪽에서 슛을 날릴 기회를 잡았으나 이러한 두 번의 공격도 실바의 빼어난 수비로 끝내 득점으로 연결되지 못했다.

FIFA World Cup™ debutantes Senegal kicked off the 2002 edition of the world's greatest sporting event by shocking holders France 0 : 1 in Seoul, Korea through a first-half goal from Papa Bouba Diop.  
  
The French-speaking African side came out bravely, and behind the dangerous El Hadji Diouf, proved that they were not going to be intimidated. France increased their pressure but their finishing failed to break down a solid Senegalese defence. Considering that France hit the woodwork twice, Senegal coach Bruno Metsu could not be more pleased about the end result of the long-awaited match. Never has the loss of Zidane's magic wand been felt more cruelly by the French.  

Senegal did not seem intimidated at all by the FIFA World Cup holders in the early going, and El Hadji Diouf created the first chance for Senegal when he beat Marcel Desailly to the by-line and laid the ball back for Khalilou Fadiga, whose low shot rolled right to France goalkeeper Fabien Barthez.  

Shortly after France had a half-chance, when a Barthez punt was knocked on to a streaking David Trezeguet behind the Senegal defence. But the Juventus striker’s first touch let him down.  

Trezeguet’s touch failed him again minutes later as he struck the right post with a powerful, curling shot from the top of the penalty area (24’).  

Senegal shocked France with the tournament’s first goal at the half-hour mark, just when it seemed that the French offside trap had Diouf in fits. The Senegalese striker rounded Frank Leboeuf and laid a dangerous ball across the face of the goal. It took deflections from Emmanuel Petit and Barthez before sitting up wonderfully for Papa Bouba Diop, who easily knocked the ball into the open net from his backside (0:1, 30’).  

After giving up the goal, France finished out the half by creating a flurry of dangerous situations, but they never managed to truly test Sylva.  

France opened the second half with a string of chances. They went close when Lilian Thuram served a cross from the right side, and Trezeguet’s glancing header couldn’t stay inside the left post (55’).  

France missed an even better opportunity soon after. Sylvain Wiltord served a cross from the right side, and Henry couldn’t keep his header down, sailing it over an open goal. Then it was Youri Djorkaeff’s turn to have a go. His shot from 25 metres was stopped by Sylva, who had to scramble to punch the rebound over the by-line for a corner.  

Vieira then rose up to meet a corner from the right side and sent a powerful header on goal, forcing Sylva to make a nice diving save to his right (58’).  

Senegal had their first good chance of the half off the foot of Fadiga, whose rocket from 10 metres caromed off the top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick (65’). Then Henry came right back with a shot of his own off the woodwork, the spirited action flying from end to end (66’).  

France seemed to run out of steam after that, demoralized and frustrated by their inability to take advantage of so many chances, and they didn’t threaten again until stoppage time, when Henry and Leboeuf each blasted shots from inside the area, forcing two nice saves from Sylva.

처음부터 이 경기는 두 팀이 거의 대등한 실력을 보이며 공격을 주거니 받거니 했고, 토마손과 우루과이의 다리오 로드리게스가 하프 타임 전후로 한 골씩 득점을 한 것도 그다지 놀랄 일이 아니었다. 토마손은 후반전의 종료를 얼마 남겨 두지 않고 또 다시 두 번째 골을 성공시켰고, 덴마크를 세네갈과 함께 A조의 선두로 끌어 올렸다. 

전반전 

경기가 시작되자 마자 양팀은 첫 경기에 대한 긴장감을 이내 떨쳐버리고 활발한 움직임을 보여주었다. 경기 시작 5분만에 우루과이의 다리오 실바와 세바스티안 아브레우는 선취 득점을 올릴 수 있는 기회를 잡았지만 득점과 연결시키지 못하였다. 덴마크는 이내 반격에 나서 데니스 롬메달이 왼발 감아차기 슛으로 우루과이의 골문을 노렸지만 벗어나고 말았다. 

이후 양팀은 서로 득점 기회를 주고 받았다. 우루과이의 알바로 레코바의 위력적인 왼발 프리킥은 덴마크의 우측 골 포스트를 살짝 빗나 갔다(9’). 이어 덴마크의 에베 산트가 전반전을 통틀어 가장 결정적인 득점 기회를 맞이하였다. 에베 산트는 우루과이 수비수를 따돌리고 다이빙 헤딩 슛을 날렸지만 공은 땅을 크게 튀긴 후 크로스바 상단을 맞고 골문을 벗어났다(21’). 

에베 산트의 헤딩 슛 이후, 양팀은 공격적인 자세로 견지하면서 골을 노렸지만 이렇다 할 득점 기회는 만들어내지는 못했다. 우루과이는 미드필더 진영에서부터 빠른 돌파를 통한 공격을 구사하였다. 반면 덴마크는 좌우 윙 플레이어들을 활용한 측면 돌파와 날카로운 크로스를 통하여 우루과이의 수비진을 위협하였다. 

전반 막판에 이르기까지 경기는 다소 침체된 모습을 보였지만 경기 종료 직전부터 다시 활기를 되찾았다. 우루과이의 레코바와 실바가 협력 플레이를 발휘, 실바가 문전 앞에서 헤딩 슛을 날렸지만 수비수에 의해서 차단되었다(40’). 곧 이어 덴마크의 롬메달이 중거리 슛를 쏘았지만 역시 우루과이의 수비수에 의해서 막히고 말았다(41’). 롬메달의 슛 이후 덴마크의 공세가 두드러지는 양상으로 전개되었고, 결국 욘 달 토마손이 팀의 선제 득점을 성공시켰다. 예스퍼 그론키아에르의 좌측 측면 패스를 받아 토마손이 10미터 전방에서 곧바로 슈팅으로 연결하여 우루과이의 골 네트를 흔든 것이다(0:1, 45’). 

후반전 

후반전이 시작되자마자 우루과이는 거센 반격을 시작하였다. 우루과이의 다리오 로드리게스는 깜짝 놀랄만한 왼발 발리슛을 덴마크 골문 안쪽으로 꽂아넣었다(1-1, 47’). 레코바가 올린 코너킥을 제대로 걷어내지 못한 것이 결국 페냐롤 소속 수비수로 활약 중인 로드리게스에게 떨어지면서 그가 20미터 밖에서 득점으로 연결시킨 것이었다. 

비록 우루과이의 레코바, 아브레우, 그리고 실바가 이따금 덴마크 수비수들을 곤혹스럽게 만들기는 하였지만 대체로 양 팀 모두 측면에서는 대등한 모습을 보였다. 레코바가 30미터 거리에서 달려들어오면서 날려본 슛은 덴마크 골키퍼 토마스 소렌센의 다이빙 수비로 차단되었다(64’). 

덴마크의 그론키아에르와 교체투입된 마르틴 요르겐센은 양쪽 측면에서 상당히 인상적인 플레이를 펼쳤다. 80분대(후반 30분대)에 요르겐센은 우루과이 페널티 지역 안에서 두 명의 수비수를 제쳤으나 우루과이 수비를 이끄는 파올로 몬테로가 이를 막으면서 위기를 넘겼다. 

이와 같이 전개되던 공방전은 토마손이 날린 완벽한 헤딩슛이 크로스바 아래쪽을 맞으면서 우루과이 골네트 안으로 빨려들어갔고 경기는 덴마크 쪽으로 기울어지게 되었다(1-2, 83’). 요르겐센이 왼쪽 진영에서 날린 센터링이 노마크 상태이던 토마손에게 이어졌고 그의 완벽한 슛에 우루과이 골키퍼 파비안 카리니는 손을 쓸 수 없었다. 

덴마크는 남은 10분을 열심히 뛰면서 자신들의 본선 첫 경기를 멋지게 마무리 지었고, 최선의 결과를 얻으며 월드컵 본선 일정을 시작하였다. 

프랑스와 우루과이는 현재 A조에서 한 포인트도 얻지 못한 채 하순위에 머물러 있다. 
 
URUGUAY 1 : 2 DENMARK 1 June 2002, 18:08 Seoul - Tokyo

Scoring chances came in bundles Saturday evening in Ulsan, Korea as Uruguay and Denmark played in their opening match of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™. Jon Dahl Tomasson found the net late in each half to lead the Danes to an emotional victory. 
  
The game began with end-to-end action, and no one was surprised when Tomasson and Uruguay’s Dario Rodriguez scored on either side of half-time. Tomasson completed his double in the closing minutes, placing Denmark atop Group A along side Senegal. France and Uruguay are now facing long-odds as they share the bottom of the table with no points. 

Neither side seemed to be showing any nerves as they both got off to bright starts. Dario Silva and Sebastian Abreu had half chances within the first five minutes for Uruguay, and just after, Dennis Rommedahl’s left-footer gave Denmark hope on their end. 

Again good chances were exchanged when Alvaro Recoba curled a patented left-footed free kick just around the right post (9’), while Ebbe Sand had the best chance of the half at the other end. But, the unmarked Schalke man watched his diving header bounce on the pitch and up off the top of the crossbar (12’). 

After the early flurry, the match settled down, though both teams continued to be attack-minded and skilful when moving forward on the break. Generally, Uruguay preferred to work quickly through the middle, while Denmark exploited space on the wings to send in some dangerous crosses. 

The half continued slowly until near the whistle. Recoba looped a lovely ball to Silva whose header was cut out (40’), and Rommedahl’s shot was cleared as well (41’). Denmark followed up with more pressure and were rewarded when Jesper Gronkjaer set up Jon Dahl Tomasson, who made no mistake with his shot from 10 yards out (0:1, 45’). 

The second half started with an immediate response from the celestes, as Dario Rodriguez curled a stunning left-foot volley into the top corner of the Danish net (1:1, 47’). From a Recoba corner, the ball was only partially cleared and it eventually fell to the Penarol defender 20 metres out. 

The sides remained relatively even, though the quickness of Recoba, Abreu, and Silva caused occasional problems for the Danish defence. Recoba’s running blast from 30 metres was caught well by a diving Thomas Sorensen (64’). 

However, Gronkjaer and substitute Martin Jorgensen were doing well on each flank for Denmark. In the 80th minute, Jorgensen beat a couple of players in the Uruguayan box, but the Uruguayan defence, led captain Paolo Montero, scrapped their way through. 

That is until Tomasson’s perfectly placed header hit off the underside of the crossbar and into the Uruguayan net (1:2, ’83). Yet another cross from the left by Jorgensen set the unmarked player up, and Uruguayan goalkeeper Fabian Carini was left flat-footed by the superb placement of the ball. 

The Danes ran out the final ten minutes of the match knowing that they had launched their World Cup adventure in the best way possible.
