전반전에 데니스 룸메달 선수의 선취골과 이어서 후반전에는 욘 토마손에 의해 추가골이 터졌다. 덴마크는 5명의 미드필더로 전반전에 프랑스의 전형적인 패스 스타일을 교란시켰고 후반전에도 번번히 잘 막아냈다. 프랑스는 불행히도 두번에 걸친 골대에 맞고 나오는 슛과 많은 아까운 기회를 놓쳤다. 
 
전반전 

무승부만 해도 16강 진출이 가능한 덴마크는 미드필드에서 번번이 프랑스를 좌절시켰다. 그들은 미드필드에서 뛰어난 수비로 프랑스의 공격을 일찍감치 차단시켜 버리고 말았다. 

프랑스의 첫 득점 기회는 다비드 트레제게가 만들어냈다. 실방 윌토르가 페널티 에어리어 가장자리에서 패스를 해주자 트레제게는 좁은 각도에서 슛을 시도했으나 토마스 소렌슨의 선방으로 득점 기회는 무산되고 말았다. 

덴마크는 계속해서 프랑스를 절망적인 상황으로 몰아갔다. 데니스 룸메달이 마침내 포문을 연 것이다. 그는 오른쪽 측면에서 패스를 받아 한 번만에 완벽한 슈팅을 날렸고 공은 파비앙 바르테즈를 지나 네트 깊숙히 박히고 말았다(1-0, 22분). 

다시 트레제게가 득점 찬스를 잡아 프랑스에게 첫 골을 안겨 주는 듯했으나 역시 실패로 끝나고 말았다. 크리스토프 뒤가리가 왼쪽 측면에서 띄워준 완벽한 센터링을 트레제게가 받아 골문 왼쪽 하단 모서리로 낮은 헤딩슛을 시도해 보았으나 소렌슨 골키퍼가 멋지게 잡아냈다(30분). 

뒤이어 지네딘 지단도 슛을 시도했으나 역시 운이 따라 주지 않았다. 그는 소렌슨 골키퍼가 잠시 골문을 벗어난 사이 35미터 지점에서 직접 중거리슛을 날렸지만 공은 방향을 틀면서 오른쪽 골대를 넘어가 버렸다(38분). 

전반이 끝날 무렵 프랑스는 되살아 나면서 적극적인 공격을 펼쳤지만 덴마크도 빈틈을 보여 주지 않았다. 마지막 프랑스의 공격도 역시 소렌슨 골키퍼의 선방으로 득점으로 연결되지 못한 채 전반이 끝나고 말았다. 

후반전 

후반전이 시작되자마자 마르셀 드사이가 지단의 코너킥을 받아 강한 헤딩슛을 해 보았지만 공은 땅에서 튀어올라 크로스바를 벗어나고 말았다. (51분) 

프랑스 선수들은 이 경기에서 한 골 이상을 넣지않으면 안된다는 사실을 잘 알고 있었다. 무승부는 아무 의미가 없는 것이다. 공격시 프랑스 선수들의 움직임은 상당히 좋았지만 길목을 막고 있던 덴마크 수비수들이 프랑스의 슈팅을 번번이 차단했다. 

덴마크가 두번째 골을 넣으면서 프랑스의 마지막 희망은 물거품처럼 사라졌다. 토마스 그라베센이 왼쪽에서 낮게 센터링을 깔아주자 마크하던 프랑스의 수비수가 넘어지면서 완벽한 기회를 맞은 토마손이 골문을 불과 8미터 남겨두고 슛, 공은 바르테즈 골키퍼의 옆을 지나 골문안으로 빨려들어갔다. (2-0, 67분) 

FIFA 랭킹 1위이자 전 대회 우승국 프랑스는 그러나 두번째 골 이후에도 포기하지 않았다. 씨세와 윌토드가 슛을 날려보았으나 모두 소렌센 골키퍼의 정면이었다. 결국 트레제게가 슈팅한 공이 크로스바의 아랫부분을 맞고 골라인을 불과 몇 센티미터 남겨두고 땅에 떨어지자 운명의 여신은 완전히 프랑스에게 등을 돌렸다는 사실이 분명해졌다. (74분)

France become the first defending champions since Brazil in 1966 to fail to advance to the second round of the FIFA World Cup™ as they fell to a convincing Danish side 2-0 in Incheon, Korea. Having won Group A, Denmark will take on the runner-up from Group F, while Senegal end up second in the group and will face the winner of the "Group of Death." 
  
The Danes got an early goal from Dennis Rommedahl and added an insurance tally from Jon Dahl Tomasson in the second half. Playing five in midfield, Denmark stymied the typical French passing style in the first half and defended in numbers in the second. The French were unfortunate though as they hit the woodwork twice and went close many times. 

Only needing a draw to go through, Denmark came out looking to frustrate France in midfield, and they did good work toward that end early on with some fine marking in midfield. 

David Trezeguet had the first chance for the French. His marker fell after Sylvain Wiltord fed him a pass on the edge of the penalty area, but Trezeguet’s shot from an angle was saved by Thomas Sorensen. 

The Danes put the French in a desperate situation when Dennis Rommedahl opened the scoring. The PSV Eindhoven forward received a pass from the right and with his first touch put a perfect shot past Fabien Barthez and into the far-side netting (1:0, 22’). 

Trezeguet again had a chance to score France’s first goal of this final phase when Christophe Dugarry served a perfect cross from the left. The Juventus man struck a good downward header to the lower-left corner, but Sorensen made a fine save (30’). 

Then it was Zinedine Zidane’s turn to go close. From 35 metres, he tried to catch Sorensen off his line with a dipping, curling shot, but it went just high and wide to the right (38’). 

France attacked with enthusiasm until the end of the half, but the Danes never seemed to miss a tackle, and whenever a French attacker did manage to put a shot on goal, Sorensen was always on hand to make the save.  

Marcel Desailly nearly had a goal for France soon after the start of the second half when he struck a powerful header off a Zidane corner kick but was forced to watch it bounce off the crossbar (51’). 

France knew that they needed more than just one goal, as a draw would do them no good, and they threw more and more men forward. Several times they did good work in the build-up, only to see the Denmark defenders converge on the ball just before the French could shoot. 

France’s last hopes finally sunk when Denmark scored their second goal. Thomas Gravesen played a low cross from the left to Tomasson, whose eyes lit up when he saw his marker stumble and fall and the ball roll sweetly to him eight metres from goal, from where he had no trouble placing his shot past Barthez (2:0, 67’). It was Tomasson’s fourth goal of the tournament. 

France, to their credit, did not give up after the second goal. Djibril Cisse and Wiltord each fired shots right at Sorensen, and then destiny seemed to announced loudly that it was plainly against France when Trezeguet had his shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounce down centimetres in front of the goal line (74’).

세네갈의 칼릴루 파디가는 전반 20분에 엘 하지 디오프가 실패한 페널티 킥을 다시 슈팅하여 오늘 경기 첫 골을 얻어냈다. 이번이 FIFA 월드컵 처음 출전인 세네갈팀에서는 다시 파파 부바 디오프가 전반전에서 추가골 2골을 득점하였는데, 파파 부바 디오프는 이 것으로 이번 본선에서 모두 3골을 득점하게 되었다. 우루과이는 후반전에 들어 엄청난 기세로 반격을 가했고, 리차드 모랄레스, 디에고 포를란의 골과 알바로 레코바의 페널티킥 성공으로 동점을 얻어 세네갈을 바짝 추격했다. 그러나 우루과이의 반격도 이미 때는 늦은 것. 우루과이는 결국 총산 2포인트로 A조에서 3위에 머물렀고 16강 진출의 꿈이 좌절되고 말았다. 
 
전반전 

우루과이는 지체 없이 처음부터 공세로 나왔다. 마르셀로 로메로가 헤딩 패스해 준 공을 다리오 실바가 슛했지만 골문을 벗어나고 말았다(7분). 

파올로 몬테로가 파비안 카리니 골키퍼에게 살짝 패스한 공을 엘 하지 디우프가 빠르게 달려들며 가로챘고 카리니 골키퍼를 제치려 할 때 얀 베제레프 심판이 디우프를 넘어뜨렸다는 이유로 페널티 킥을 선언했다. 칼릴루 파디가가 천천히 다가가 카리니 골키퍼의 오른쪽으로 슛했고 골키퍼는 반대쪽으로 몸을 날렸다(1-0, 20분). 

우루과이는 곧바로 알바로 레코바가 25미터 지점에서 프리킥을 얻어 냈지만 토니 실바 골키퍼의 선방에 막혔다(22분). 잠시 후 다시 세네갈 문전에서 혼전을 벌였지만 결국 골로 연결시키지는 못했다. 

세네갈은 역습을 골로 연결시키며 우루과이를 벼랑 끝으로 몰았다. 미드필드에서 수비수를 따돌린 앙리 카마라가 왼쪽으로 치고 들어간 다음 페널티 지역 근처에서 잠시 주춤하다가 달려드는 파파 부바 디오프에게 밀어 주었고 디오프는 18미터짜리 오른발 슛으로 오른쪽 위 구석에 찔러 넣었다(2-0, 26분). 

공격에만 치중하던 우루과이는 다시 한 번 후방을 노출하며 세 번째 골을 내주고 말았다. 파디가가 수비진을 넘겨 공을 띄우자 디우프가 발리 킥으로 카리니 골키퍼를 넘겨 크로스바 아래를 맞고 들어가는 슛을 성공시키며 이 경기에서 자신의 두 번째 골을 기록했다(3-0, 38분). 

후반전 

16강 라운드에 진출하기 위해서는 4골이 필요했던 우루과이는 후반전 1분만에 첫 골을 뽑아내었다. 문전 앞에서 날린 실바의 슛은 골키퍼의 선방에 막혔지만, 후반전에 교체 투입된 리차드 모랄레스가 튕겨 나온 공을 잡아 상대 골문으로 쉽게 집어 넣었다 (3-1, 46분). 

우루과이는 계속해서 세네갈을 압박하였다. 그들은 코너 플랙 부근에서 프리킥을 얻어 세네갈의 문전을 위협하였다. 디에고 포를란이 상대 페널티 에어리어 지역에 자리잡고 있던 레코바에게 공을 연결해주었고, 레코바를 이를 받아 강하게 슛했지만 세네갈 수비수의 몸에 맞고 말았다. 이어 포를란 흘러 나온 공을 잡아 다시 슛을 날렸지만 골문을 벗어나 골킥이 선언되었다 (56분).

우루과이는 계속 세네갈을 몰아 부쳤고 레코바의 프리킥으로 동점 상황을 만들 수도 있었다. 레코바는 25미터 거리에서 강한 프리킥을 구사하였지만 공은 골 포스트 옆을 살짝 벗어났다 (71분). 

세네갈의 공격수인 디오프는 실바의 패스 미스를 틈타 우루과이의 골 네트를 흔들 수 있는 기회가 찾아왔지만, 실바의 필사적인 저항으로 인해 득점이 무산되었다 (76분). 얼마 지나지 않아 우루과이의 포를란이 골키퍼와 단독으로 맞서는 절호의 득점 기회를 맞이하였다. 그러나 실망스럽게도 그의 슛은 골문을 벗어나 버렸다. 

우루과이의 파상 공세는 계속되었다. 모랄레스는 실바와 함께 2대1 협력 플레이를 구사하면서 세네갈의 문전으로 쇄도하였고, 세네갈의 수비수를 그를 저지하다가 파울을 범하였다. 이에 페널티 킥이 선언, 레코바가 페널티 키커로 나서 골을 성공시켜 인저리 타임이 다가오는 시점에서 동점 상황을 만들어 냈다 (3-3, 88분). 

우루과이의 입장에서는 세네갈을 제치고 2라운드에 진출하려면 1골이 더 필요했다. 우루과이는 구스타보 바렐라의가 20미터 전방에서 강력한 중거리 슛을 날리면서 승리를 낚을 수 있는 마지막 기회를 잡는 듯 하였다. 그러나 바렐라의 중거리 슛은 세네갈의 라민 디아타의 필사적인 수비에 막혀 버렸고 그의 몸을 맞고 크게 튀어 오른 공을 모랄레스가 헤딩으로 재차 슛을 날렸지만 공은 골 포스트 옆으로 빗겨 나가고 말았다 (92분).

Needing to win, Uruguay pushed forward early and were made to pay the price by Senegal who scored three times in the first 38 minutes to reserve their place in the second round of the FIFA World Cup™ where they will face the winner of the Group F. Denmark finish first in Group A and will take on the runner-up from the “Group of Death.”  

The referee awarded El Hadji Diouf a penalty kick in the 20th minute, which was converted by Khalilou Fadiga. The FIFA World Cup debutantes added two further first-half goals by Papa Bouba Diop, who now has three in the tournament. Uruguay stormed back in the second half, getting goals from Richard Morales, Diego Forlan, and a penalty by Alvaro Recoba, but it was too late for the South Americans, who finish with two points in third place. 

Uruguay wasted little time generating the attack. Dario Silva had the first chance when he controlled a headed pass by Marcelo Romero at the back post, but his shot was well off target (7’). 

When Paolo Montero played a soft pass back to goalkeeper Fabian Carini, the speedy El Hadji Diouf slipped in to intercept and after rounding Carini, the referee, Mr. Jan Wegereef ruled the keeper pulled Diouf down and called a penalty kick. Khalilou Fadiga calmly stepped to the spot and placed his shot to the right of Carini, who guessed the opposite way (1:0, 20’). 

Uruguay came back right away with an Alvaro Recoba free kick, but his 25-metre effort was saved by a diving Tony Sylva (22’). Moments later, a wild scramble on the edge of the Senegal goal box looked dangerous but never resulted in a shot on goal. 

Senegal doubled the lead on a counter-attack putting Uruguay in serious peril. After beating his defender at midfield, Henri Camara raced down the left side. As he reached the penalty area, he slowed enough for Papa Bouba Diop to join the play and rip an 18-metre right-footer into the top-right corner (2:0, 26’). 

With no choice but to take chances, Uruguay were exposed in the back again and went down by three goals. Fadiga chipped a ball over the top of the back line and Diop did well to pop the ball over Carini on the volley and off the underside of the crossbar for his second goal of the match (3:0, 38’).  

Needing at least four goals to go through to the round of 16, Uruguay struck in the first minute of the second half. Silva’s close-range shot was saved, but the rebound fell directly into the path of half-time substitute Richard Morales and he had no trouble finishing (3:1, 46’). 

They threatened again with a free kick near the corner flag. Diego Forlan found Recoba at the top of the area, but his drive was blocked by a defender. The rebound was taken by Forlan and his shot went out for a goal kick (56’). 

Forlan brought Uruguay within one when he chested down a clearance by Diop 20 metres out and looped a volley into the far-side netting (3:2, 69’). 

Uruguay kept coming and nearly had the game level as Recoba’s 25-metre free kick just missed the far post (71’). 

A Sylva punt sent Diouf into the clear, but the Senegal forward could not beat a charging Carini (76’). Moments later, Forlan had his own breakaway, but was also disappointed when his shot rolled wide of the target (77’). 

Morales worked a clever one-two with Silva to break in on goal and was fouled in the area, setting up the equalising spot-kick from Recoba as stoppage time approached (3:3, 88’). 

Now needing just one goal to crush Senegal’s dream, Uruguay had a final chance when Gustavo Varela’s 20-metre effort was cleared off the line by Lamine Diatta and Morales rebound header was wide (92’).
