Colombia delighted their passionate, colourful and enthusiastic fans in Tilburg by deservedly beating Italy in the opening match of Group E at the FIFA World Youth Championship Netherlands 2005.

Colombian yellow, blue and red dominated the Willem II Stadium, both in the crowded grandstands and out on the pitch as Italy failed to contain their impressive opponents from South America.

A delighted Colombia coach Eduardo Lara said afterwards: "When the players came out for the warm-up and saw so many Colombians here, we realised it was going to be like a home game. I told my players then that we must win this match for them and they did."

Two second half goals by Wason Renteria and a majestic strike by subsstitute Fredy Guarin were enough to secure the points, though it had seemed for a time that Colombia's hard work may only be rewarded with a draw.

They held the upper hand in a tactically tight and tense first half, taking the game to the Italians without making a decisive breakthrough.

Roared on by their fabulous supporters, Colombia pressed the Italians back in their own half for sustained periods, although Italy goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano was rarely troubled in the opening 45 minutes.

Renteria, Hugo Rodallega and Harrison Otalvaro all speculatively tried their luck, but Viviano looked most anxious when Lino Marzoratti almost turned a tricky low cross into his own net - the ball brushing the side-netting as it went out for a corner.

At the other end, Italy struggled to make an impression, though Michele Troiano did extremely well to create space for himself inside the box, but when the moment came to steady himself and let fly, he sliced his right-footed effort harmlessly wide.

Colombia had Italy on the back foot again after the restart and neat interplay released Otalvaro once again, but he fired tamely into the grateful arms of Viviano.

Striker Moreno came off the bench after the break, with Colombia's highly-rated forward Rodallega struggling to make an impact. Moreno immediately had Italy rattled as his deflected cross landed on the roof of the net and even more so when he forced a reflex save from Viviano. It was from the resulting clever, quickly-taken corner that Renteria finally volleyed the ball past Viviano from Otalvaro's precise cross (1:0, 76').

Good work rewarded
Moreno almost doubled the lead - and probably should have done - after forcing his way through Italy back-line with great skill and trickery before dragging his attempt past Viviano's right-hand post.

Italy were almost totally reliant on rare counter attacks whenever they were able to get the ball out of their own half, but Graziano Pelle will have been embarrassed to have wasted one of the more promising openings by blasting his snatched shot a long way wide.

Pelle could have redeemed himself with the clock ticking down, but his volley brought even greater acrobatics out of Libis Arenas in the Colombian goal to deny Italy an equaliser.

Guarin put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time with a thundering right-footer into the top corner. Viviano did well to get his fingertips to it, but he had no hope of keeping it out (2:0, 93').

Italy coach Paolo Berrettini was understandably downcast afterwards: "We weren't so bad in the first half, but in the second Colombia were the only team out there. Colombia have had a year to prepare for this tournament, whereas we have only really had the last four days after the long season in Italy."
