World Champions Brazil were made to sweat by a talented Swiss side but emerged victorious 1-0 in Emmen on Wednesday and jump to the top of Group F at the FIFA World Youth Championship Netherlands 2005. A 14th-minute header from defender Gladstone was all that separated the sides in a match that began brilliantly but, as a spectacle, ended disappointingly as the South Americans preserved their advantage.

"We had some great opportunities in the first ten minutes and we need to improve our finishing," said Brazil coach Rene Weber after the match. "The rhythm decreased after the break as our lack of preparation told."

There was just one change to the teams from the opening matches with Swen Koenig coming in for Swiss number one Daniel Lopar. And he was almost called into action in the second minute when Diego Tardelli cracked an opportunist effort from distance just wide. Under the warm glow of the sunshine, the selecao had started brightly and four minutes later Tardelli picked out Ernane but, one-on-one with Koenig, the midfielder delayed his finish allowing Arnaud Buehler to make a last-ditch saving tackle.

It was an exhilarating opening and four minutes later, at the other end, Johan Djourou had a similar chance after Tranquillo Barnetta had burst through the Brazilian rearguard. Not quite believing the chance, the Arsenal midfielder took a heavy first touch on the penalty spot and his effort was blocked.

Switzerland were made to pay. Not by Tardelli, who headed Evandro's free kick against the corner of post and bar, but by Gladstone who rose majestically to head the resulting corner home for Brazil's opening goal of the finals (0:1, '14).

Pierre-Andre Schuermann had applauded his team's "fighting spirit" against Korea, and they threw everything forward. Johan Vonlanthen got blind side but was forced to hurry his shot and Renan saved. Two minutes later, 17, the Brazilian keeper spectacularly palmed over a Goran Antic half-volley but even he could do nothing but watch on 23 minutes when Reto Ziegler, finally receiving the ball on the left, smashed a dipping 25-yarder against the bar. From the follow-up corner, Djourou headed over.

Switzerland continued to press but Rene Weber's side had weathered the storm. On the break, Rafael Sosis had two decent efforts before half-time from the left and Evandro had the Brazilian fans temporarily dancing the samba after firing a free kick into the side-netting. Seconds before the interval, it was the vocal Swiss fans turn to jump to their feet but Renan tumbled brilliantly to his left to turn aside Fabio Santos' misplaced header.

After the free-flowing opening period, the second half, to Schuermann's annoyance, became a stop-start affair. Surprisingly isolated, Vonlanthen laboured against Gladstone and the impressive Roberto. Ernane substitute Renato went close on the break as the selecao defended in numbers.

In a frantic finish, Tardelli should have made it 2-0 but, one-on-one, Koenig saved. Then deep into injury time, Vonlanthen almost grabbed an equaliser but Renan punched over the Brescia striker's spectacular overhead kick.  Barnetta headed the resulting corner a yard wide.

"We were not aggressive enough early on and we were having problems at corners," Schuermann told reporters. "We changed things around and we played more tightly. We gave it all but it wasn't to be. I prefer to watch Brazilian sides create rather than waste time."

Goalkeeping hero Renan was all modesty at the end.

"I don't usually plan to appear during the match," he joked. "The less I'm seen the better."
