아르헨티나가 2005세계청소년축구대회 정상에  오르며 사상 첫 5회 우승의 금자탑을 세웠다. 

아르헨티나는 3일(한국시간) 네덜란드 위트레흐트의 갈겐바르트스타디움에서 열린 나이지리아와의 대회 결승에서 간판스타 리오넬 메시(바르셀로나)의 페널티킥  2방으로 2-1 승리를 거뒀다. 

이로써 아르헨티나는 자국에서 열렸던 2001년 대회 이후 4년만에 정상에 복귀했고 브라질(4회 우승)을 제치고 역대 최다 우승국의 타이틀도 가져갔다. 

'슈퍼이글스' 나이지리아도 최근 맨체스터 유나이티드에 스카우트된 공격형  미드필더 존 오비 미켈의 지휘로 대등한 경기를 펼쳐나갔지만 대회 최고의 별로  떠오른 '천재' 메시를 막지 못한 것이 뼈아팠다. 

양팀 모두 몇 차례 기회를 놓치며 '0'의 행진이 이어지던 전반 40분 메시는  하프라인에서부터 혼자 드리블하면서 수비수 1명을 제치고 페널티지역 안쪽까지  파고들었고, 델레 아델레예의 무리한 태클로 페널티킥을 유도해냈다. 

키커로 나선 메시는 상대 골키퍼 암브루제 반젠킨을 완전히 속이고 골문 왼쪽  구석을 향해 왼발로 가볍게 공을 굴려 선취골을 뽑았다. 

하지만 F조 조별리그 2차전에서 한국에 1-2로 역전패한 뒤 4연승으로  승승장구한 나이지리아의 반격도 만만치 않았다. 

나이지리아는 후반 8분 올루바요 아데페미가 오른쪽 구석에서 낮은 크로스를 올려주자 페널티지역 중앙에 자리잡고 있던 치네두 오그부케가 옆으로 몸을 틀며 그림같은 다이빙헤딩슛을 날려 순식간에 승부를 원점으로 돌렸다. 

기세가 오른 나이지리아는 공세의 주도권을 잡고 맹공을 퍼부었으나 데이비드  아브워와 프로미세 이삭 등의 슈팅이 골문을 외면해 역전까지는 이루지 못했다. 

반면 일방적으로 밀리던 아르헨티나는 단 한번의 역습기회를 살려 우승컵의  향방을 결정지었다. 

실점 직후 조커로 투입된 세르히오 아게로가 후반 30분 페널티지역 오른쪽에서 돌파를 시도하다 상대 수비수 먼데이 제임스의 반칙을 얻어낸 것. 

이번에도 페널티킥 키커로 나선 메시는 골문 오른쪽 구석을 향해 왼발 대각선 슛을 적중시켜 스코어를 2-1로 만들었다. 

이날 2골을 작렬한 메시는 대회 6호골로 페르난도 요렌테(스페인), 올렉산드르 알리에프(우크라이나.이상 5골)를 제치고 득점왕(골든볼)에 올랐다. 

메시는 또 대회 최우수선수에게 주어지는 아디다스 골든슈도 받아 팀의 우승컵 과 함께 '트리플크라운'을 달성했다. 

앞서 열린 3-4위전에서는 브라질이 모로코를 상대로 '3분의 기적'을  연출하며 2-1로 역전승, 3위에 올랐다. 

브라질은 후반 2분 수비수 에드카를로스의 자책골로 0-1로 뒤졌지만 후반 43분 파비우 산토스의 동점 헤딩골에 이어 인저리타임 1분 에드카를로스의 역전 결승골이 터져나와 역전 드라마를 마무리했다. 

한편 한국과 함께 F조에 속했던 나이지리아와 브라질이 각각 2,3위에 올라 역시 '죽음의 조'라는 표현을 실감케 했다.

역시 '제2의 마라도나'라는 별명이 부끄럽지 않았다.

아르헨티나의 '떠오르는 별' 리오넬 메시(18.FC 바르셀로나)가 3일(이하 한국시간) 펼쳐진 2005세계청소년(U-20)축구선수권대회 나이지리아와의 결승전에서 전후반에 각각 페널티킥으로 2골을 터트려 팀의 2-1 승리를 이끌어 냈다. 

이날 두 골을 터트린 메시는 이번 대회 6골을 기록해 득점왕(골든슈)와 함께 MVP(골든볼)까지 거머쥐면서 대회 우승과 함께 '트리플크라운'의 영광을 차지했다. 

특히 메시의 6골은 지난 79년 마라도나가 제2회 일본 세계청소년선수권에서  터트린 골과 똑같아 '제2의 마라도나'라는 찬사를 부끄럽지 않게 했다. 

아르헨티나에서 '트리플크라운'이 배출된 건 2001년 아르헨티나 대회에서  무려 11골을 터트려 우승을 이끌었던 하비에르 사비올라(24.AS모나코) 이후 4년만이다. 

더욱이 세계청소년대회가 시작된 지난 77년 이후 15번의 대회가 치러지면서 '트리플크라운'의 영광을 차지했던 선수는 브라질의 제오바니  실바(83년  대회.6골)를 포함해 사비올라(2001년)와 메시(2005년) 등 단 3명밖에 없다. 

마라도나도 79년 대회 당시 골게터(6골), 프리킥 스페셜리스트, 패스  능력  등 공격수가 가질 수 있는 모든 특기를 다 보여주면서 MVP로 선정됐지만 득점왕에는 오르지 못했었다. 
 

지난 2001년 대회에서 '트리플크라운'에 올랐던 사비올라는 우승  이후  스페인 프리메라리가 바르셀로나로 이적해 2001-2002시즌 데뷔 첫해에 17골을 터트리는  활약을 펼치며 전세계 축구팬들을 환호시켰다. 

메시 역시 지난 5월 바르셀로나 역사상 가장 어린 나이인 17세 10개월 7일에 스페인 프리메라리가 데뷔골을 기록했을 만큼 기량을 인정받고 있어 올시즌 '아르헨티나 골폭풍'이 프리메라리가에 다시 불어 닥칠 수 있을 지 기대가 되고 있다. 

특히 지난달 30일 막을 내린 컨페더레이션스컵 결승전에서 아르헨티나가 아쉽게 브라질에게 무릎을 꿇으면서 청소년대회 우승을 이끈 메시에 대한 아르헨티나  축구팬들의 기대는 더욱 커질 수 밖에 없다. 

최근 2010년까지 바르셀로나와 장기 재계약을 체결한 메시가  사비올라의  뒤를 이어서 '차세대 마라도나'의 명성을 제대로 이어갈 수 있을 지 기대된다.

With a pair of penalties in the final against Nigeria, Argentine starlet Lionel Messi sealed the adidas Golden Shoe award as finals top scorer. He was followed by Spain's Llorente and Ukrainian sensation Aliiev. Also receiving the adidas Golden Ball as top scorer with a superior goals tally of six, the Argentine teenager marked his arrival on the international scene with a bang. Behind him for finals second and third-best players are Nigerians teammates John Obi Mikel and Taye Taiwo.

No other player exerted as decisive an influence on his team as the Barcelona starlet. The lightning-quick 18-year-old, left to kick his heels on the bench for the first 45 minutes of the tournament, offered evidence of his prodigious talent the minute he was allowed into the action. He repaid coach Francisco Ferrara's faith with a goal in Argentina's 2-0 victory over Egypt, before orchestrating his side's 1-0 triumph against Germany in inimitable fashion with a highly unselfish assist. Unsurprisingly, Barcelona President Joan Laporta believes he has unearthed a real rough diamond. The players' unparalleled performance in the second round did nothing to hurt his reputation. 

Fernando Llorente (Spain) 5 goals, 2 assists 

At first glance, you might think this centre-forward's key asset was his height of 1,94m. But the Athletic Bilbao youngster is not just strong in the air; he also causes problems with the ball at his feet, notably in and around the penalty area. Well used to dealing with tough man-markers, Llorente holds the ball up and stretches defences to make space for colleagues. Moreover, his five goals at the finals show an ability to be in the right place at the right time, making him the reference point of the Spanish attack. "I am happy with my performances, but that's not important - what matters is to play for the team and contribute to us getting results," the 20-year-old says. 

Oleksandr Aliiev (Ukraine) 5 goals, 1 assists 

With five goals from the three group matches, 20-year-old Aliiev impressed mightily with his clinical finishing at Netherlands 2005. The diminutive number 8, with a sharp eye for goal, combined both scoring and midfield duties. He showed his versatility in all four of Ukraine's games, creating chances and scoring goals with aplomb.  Coach Alexei Mikhailichenko may have bemoaned his side's finishing, but he can have no complaints about Aliiev.

With bags of pace, skill to burn and a searing left-footed shot, the Barcelona youngster is poised for great things.  With all the pressure weighing him down in the final match against Nigeria, the youngster managed to keep his cool and put two penalties home to give Argentina their fourth World Youth Championship crown in six tries.

With so much pressure on his young shoulders, Nigeria's midfield maestro found the centre of the pitch the best place to relieve the tension. Described as having the composure of a 30-year-old, Mikel found the time and space to orchestrate his side's best attacks. Tall, elegant and powerful, the playmaker held his nerve to eventually convert the important penalty and hand his team the cushion of a 2-0 lead against Switzerland in the all-important third match. Great things are expected of this 18-year-old.  

Taye Taiwo (Nigeria) 48 points 

With two crucial goals in Nigeria's rip-roaring run to the final, the Marseilles left back became an unlikely spark in attack for the Flying Eagles.  Towering, powerful and with an attention to detail rarely seen at such a young age, the big number-three was one of Nigeria's most potent weapons on both sides of the pitch. With two successful penalties - including the winner - in the marathon quarter-final shootout with the hosts, it was evident that the big man's nerves were not easily jangled.   With a great future ahead, the ever-smiling Taiwo was a force to be reckoned with in the Lowlands.
