Matthew 01: The Generations Of The Messiah

"The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham"

The Holy Bible is rich in Messianic prophecy - including long before the creation of Israel (see The Origin Of Israel and When Will The Prophecy Of Israel Be Fulfilled?) and then Judah.

Abraham knew that the Messiah was coming, from one of the lines of his descendants - but Abraham did not know that the Messiah would be a Jew because Jews didn't yet exist in the lifetime of Abraham (Jews began with the descendants of Abraham's grandson Judah; see The First Jews). The LORD's promise to Abraham was simply that the Messiah would be of a righteous seed of Abraham.

"12:2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed." (Genesis 12:2-3 KJV)

"18:18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?" (Genesis 18:18 KJV)

"11:9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 11:10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God." (Hebrews 11:9-10 KJV)

It was later, when the line of Judah came into existence, that the Messianic promise could be stated more specifically. Jacob, who the LORD renamed as Israel (see A Biography Of Jacob: When Jacob Became Israel), stated exactly where the Messiah would be born.

"49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be." (Genesis 49:10 KJV)

King David had even more specific awareness. Those earlier knew that the Messiah would be the Savior, as did David, but David also knew that the Messiah would be a King. David is actually one of the Bible's greatest prophets in that regard (see the studies The Messiah's Rod Of Iron and The Patriotism Prophecy; also David's View From The Cross and King David's Zion Prophecy).

So it was then that the birth of the Messiah fulfilled prophecies that were known since the earliest time. Note carefully, again, that the Messianic line began with Abraham of Iraq (see A Biography Of Abraham: The Genealogy Of Abram and A Biography Of Abraham: From Ur To Canaan) simply because he was a righteous man. The specific line of the Messiah, from Abraham, was created by the LORD, later, beginning with the birth of Isaac (see A Biography Of Abraham: Isaac).

"1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

1:2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;
1:3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
1:4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;
1:5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
1:6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
1:7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
1:8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;
1:9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;
1:10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;
1:11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

1:12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;
1:13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
1:14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;
1:15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;
1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations." (Matthew 1:1-17 KJV)

The virgin birth of the Messiah was also prophesied long before. Joseph, as a righteous man (see Joseph Of Nazareth), would almost certainly have been aware of the Scriptural prophecies of it (see also What Did The Messiah Read From Isaiah That Day?). But as a humble, righteous man, he didn't leap to the conclusion, as so many would for their "ambitious" reasons, that he and Mary would be given the responsibility to be the parents of the Messiah. Both of them in fact responded in the same modest way (i.e. "1:38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her." Luke 1:38 KJV; see also What Does The Bible Really Say About Mary?). It was also the reason that, after the angel appeared to him, as Mary had done, that he then accepted and realized that he had been chosen. Joseph and Mary were not a couple of loudmouth egotists lusting to "lead" God's people.

"1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

1:24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS." (Matthew 1:18-25 KJV)

Fact Finder: As stated in verse 23 above, "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel." What does "Emmanuel" mean?
