전반전 

파라과이는 초반에 기선을 잡았고 얼마 지나지 않아 선취골을 뽑았다. 호세 루이스 칠라베르트가 길게 차 준 공을 스페인 수비수가 없는 지역에서 프란시스코 아르세가 잡았다. 팔메이라스 소속인 아르세는 반대편 골대 쪽으로 강하게 슛했고 이케르 까시야스 스페인 골키퍼가 멋지게 다이빙하며 막아냈지만 튕겨나간 공이 푸욜의 다리에 맞고 골대로 들어가는 자책골이 되고 말았다(9분, 1-0). 

라울은 12미터 전방에서 동점골을 넣을 수 있는 좋은 기회를 맞았지만, 그의 왼발 슛은 크로스 바를 넘어가고 말았다(22분). 스페인은 종종 위기를 맞기는 했어도 점유율은 더 높았다. 하지만 세사레 말디니 감독이 이끄는 파라과이가 수비에 치중한 채 역습을 노리는 전략으로 맞서는 바람에 이렇다 할 기회를 만들지 못했다. 

라울은 페널티킥 지점에서 골을 등진 채 공을 잡는 절호의 기회를 잡았지만, 공은 골문을 벗어나고 말았다(31분). 

이후에는 양팀 모두 기회다운 기회를 잡지 못했다. 파라과이는 카를로스 가마라와 셀소 아얄라가 후방을 굳게 지킨 채 포워드인 호세 카르도소와 로케 산타크루즈만이 공격에 나섰다. 그러나 경기 시작 후 30분이 지나면서는 아무런 기회를 만들지 못했다. 

후반전 

후반 들어 스페인에게 찾아온 첫번째 득점 기회는 파라과이 골키퍼 칠라베르트에게 간단히 차단당했다. 스페인의 데 페드로는 25미터 거리에서 직접 프리킥을 날려보았지만, 칠라베르트는 거의 움직이지도 않고 간단히 볼을 처리해 냈다(49분). 

하지만 스페인 공격의 고삐가 느슨해진 듯한 순간 동점골이 터졌다. 데 페드로가 왼쪽 진영에서 코너킥을 올렸는데, 페르난도 모리엔테스가 수비수를 뚫고 솟구쳐 올라 강한 헤딩슛을 날렸고, 칠라베르트는 자신의 오른쪽으로 지나가는 공을 지켜볼 수 밖에 없었다(1-1, 53분). 

후반 15분이 지나가면서 양팀에게 각각 기회가 찾아왔다. 먼저 파라과이의 호세 카르도소가 스페인 수비수를 왼쪽 터치라인 부근에서 제치고 옆에서 골문 쪽으로 파고 들었으나, 슛을 쏠 각이 없어 수비수 카시야스에게 쉽게 제지 당했다. 곧 이어 레알 마드리드 소속인 스페인의 모리엔테스가 파라과이 페널티 지역 안에서 마크를 따돌리고 슛을 쏘려 하자, 골키퍼 칠라베르트가 뛰쳐나와 이를 저지했고 모리엔테스가 날린 슛은 크로스바를 넘어가 버렸다(64분). 

하지만, 모리엔테스는 이렇게 놓친 기회를 두 번째 득점으로 만회하였다. 이번에도 데 페드로가 왼쪽에서 센터링을 올린 것이 득점으로 연결된 것이다. 칠라베르트가 공을 잡아내기 위해 나섰지만 모리엔테스는 별 무리 없이 빈 골문 안으로 공을 차 넣었다(2-1, 69분) 

파라과이의 ‘골 넣는 골키퍼’ 칠라베르트는 이번에도 30미터 거리 프리킥을 성공시킬 기회가 있었다. 거의 성공할 듯 했으나, 스페인 수비수 카시야스가 뛰어들어 힘없이 굴러들어오는 골을 걷어냈다(80분). 

파라과이의 추격의 불길도 문전에서 터닝슛을 쏘려던 라울이 상대팀의 파울로 페널티킥을 얻으면서 꺼져버렸다. 페르난도 이에로가 페널티킥을 차넣었고, 멋지게 칠라베르트를 속이면서 낮게 깔리는 슈팅은 골 왼쪽 코너 깊숙이 박혔다(3-1, 82분). 

이제 스페인은 1라운드에서 남아프리카공화국과의 경기를 남겨 두고 있다. 한편 파라과이는 다가오는 슬로베니아와의 경기에서 우승을 거둘 경우 16강에 진출할 수 있다.

A rampant Fernando Morientes scored two second-half goals to bring Spain back from one down to Paraguay and make them the first team to assure their spot in the second round of the competition.  
  
The half-time substitute was the hero in a hard-fought match that the Spanish nonetheless deserved to win. Paraguay's goal came when goalkeeper Iker Casillas saved the ball into the legs of Puyol, who could not prevent putting it into his own net. Captain Fernando Hierro added a late penalty to assure that Spain would win their first two matches in a FIFA World Cup since 1950. To close the group stage, Spain face South Africa, while Jose Luis Chilavert and his team still have a chance of qualifying when they take on Slovenia in their final match. 

Paraguay came out and controlled possession early, and it wasn’t long before they took the lead. Jose Luis Chilavert started the sequence with a long ball into the area that the Spain defence cleared straight to Francisco Arce. The Palmeiras man shot powerfully at the far post, and though Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas made a nice diving save, the rebound bounced off Puyol and into the net (0:1, 9’). 

Raul had a chance to equalise after a nice build up set him up with a shot from 12 metres, but he sailed his left-foot effort over the bar (22’). Although Spain held possession well and looked dangerous at times, they had trouble finding clear chances after that, as coach Cesare Maldini’s men packed themselves behind the ball and waited for the counter-attack. 

Raul had the next opportunity for Spain when he received the ball near the penalty spot with his back to goal, but he couldn’t steer his spinning half-volley on goal (31’).  

As the half winded down, even the half-chances started to dry up for both sides. Carlos Gamarra and Celso Ayala kept things tight in back for the Paraguayans, who created little for themselves after the half-hour mark, sending only forwards Jose Cardozo and Roque Santa Cruz forward with any regularity. 

Spain’s first chance of the second half turned out to be no problem for Chilavert. De Pedro took a free kick from 25 metres, but Chilavert hardly had to move before catching it cleanly (49’). 

But when it seemed that Spain were out of ideas, they scored their equaliser. De Pedro served a corner kick from the left side, and Fernando Morientes elevated above the defence and drove a powerful header that Chilavert could only watch as it flew past him to his right (1:1, 53’). 

The sides traded chances shortly after the hour mark. First Jose Cardozo beat a Spanish defender down the left touch line, but he left himself with too tight an angle as he came in on goal, allowing Casillas to shut him down. Shortly after, Morientes got loose in the penalty area but, with Chilavert rushing off his line, the Real Madrid forward sent his shot just over the bar (64’). 

Morientes made up for the miss with his second goal of the night. De Pedro again served a cross from the left. Chilavert came off his line but couldn’t intercept, and Morientes had little trouble tapping the ball into the empty net (2:1, 69’). 

The flamboyant Paraguayan keeper had his chance to make up for his gaffe on a free kick from 30 metres. He put his shot on goal, but Casillas was up to the test as he dove to his left to save the dipping shot (80’). 

Paraguay’s hopes of getting back into the game died an angry death when Raul was fouled as he tried a spinning shot from close range. Fernando Hierro stepped up to take the spot-kick, and he struck well into the lower-left corner as Chilavert guessed the wrong way (3:1, 82’).

남아공이 프리킥으로 포문을 열었다. 킨톤 포춘이 왼쪽에서 크로스로 올려준 공을 시야봉가 놈베테가 헤딩으로 넣어보려 했으나, 공은 머리가 아닌 오른쪽 허벅지에 맞고 그대로 골 네트를 흔들었다. (1대0, 전반4분). 

남아공은 선제골 득점 이후 전반 내내 슬로베니아를 몰아 부쳐 여러 차례 위협적인 상황을 연출했으나, 슬로베니아 골키퍼 마르코 시메우노비치의 실력을 시험해 볼 수 있는 결정적인 슈팅은 날리지 못했다. 슬로베니아도 전반 마지막 15분 동안 사력을 다해 공세를 펼친 결과, 밀렌코 아치모비치가 동점골 찬스를 맞아 문전 19미터 거리에서 슛을 날려봤으나 골문을 크게 벗어나고 말았다. (전반 33분). 

남아공은 추가 골 획득 기회를 맞았다. 시부시소 주마가 오른쪽에서 수비수를 제치고 골 라인 근처에 있던 베네딕트 맥카시로부터 컷 백을 받아 노마크 찬스를 얻었으나 우물쭈물하다 수비수가 달려들자 골로 연결시키지 못했다. (전반 41분) 

남아공과 슬로베니아 양 팀은 하프타임을 맞아 라커룸으로 향했다 남아공은 1-0리드에 만족해 했지만 슬로베니아는 전반전에 1점을 내주고도 동점골을 터뜨리지 못해, 전반전 45분을 허비했으면서도 전혀 위기감을 느끼지 못하고 있는 것 같았다. 

후반전 

남아공은 후반 초반부터 맥카시가 20미터 전방에서 강력한 슈팅을 날리며 슬로베니아 골문을 위협했다(50분). 

슬로베니아는 스레츠코 카타네치 감독이 퇴장 당하고 남은 경기를 관중석에서 지켜보게 되면서 더 어려운 상황을 맞게 되었다. 

남아공은 포춘이 왼쪽 측면에서 프리 킥을 얻어내며 공세를 계속했다. 맨체스터 유나이티드에서 활약하는 포춘은 맥카시에게 위력적인 센터링을 연결했으나 맥카시의 헤딩슛이 골포스트를 맞고 골 아웃이 되며 추가 골을 성공시킬 절호의 기회를 놓치고 말았다(65분). 맥카시는 얼마 후 페널티 킥 지점 근처에서 결정적인 기회를 잡았으나 골키퍼 시메우노비치의 정면에 슈팅을 날리며 훌륭한 기회를 다시 한 번 놓치고 말았다. 

슬로베니아는 오른쪽 측면에서 센터링 받은 볼을 나스탸 체가 헤딩으로 연결하며 골을 노렸지만 남아공의 골키퍼 안드레 아렌드세가 이 것을 막아냈고 코너 킥을 얻어내는 것에 그쳤다(71분). 슬로베니아는 클리어 된 볼을 남아공 선수들이 보고만 있는 틈을 타 아미르 카리치가 달려들며 위력적인 중거리 슈팅을 날려 보았지만 볼은 크로스바를 넘어가고 말았다(81분). 

시메우노비치는 델론 벅클리와 일대일의 상황에서 각도를 좁히며 나와 결정적인 슈팅을 막아내는 등 좋은 경기를 보여주었다.(86분). 하지만 시메우노비치의 고군분투에도 슬로베니아는 패했고 남아공은 승점 3점을 얻으며 사상 처음으로 FIFA 월드컵™에서의 승리의 기쁨을 누렸다.

South Africa bolstered their hopes of moving into the second round of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™ with a narrow victory over now eliminated Slovenia. 
  
Siyabonga Nomvethe scored the only goal of the match, though South Africa had the lion's share of the chances. Slovenia, without their star playmaker Zlatko Zahovic who was sent home this week, struggled to create much danger. Bafana Bafana now take on Spain hoping to take point and guarantee their place in the second round. Slovenia play Paraguay in a match that means nothing to them besides pride. 

South Africa opened the scoring quickly but in less-than-beautiful fashion when Quinton Fortune served a free kick from the left. The cross curled in for Siyabonga Nomvethe, who failed to make contact with his head, but the ball hit off his right thigh and deflected into the net (1:0, 4’). 

South Africa looked the more dangerous side through most of the first half-hour, though they did little to test Slovenia goalkeeper Marko Simeunovic. Slovenia, for their part, threatened more in the final quarter-hour of the half, nearly getting the equaliser on a 19-metre shot from Milenko Acimovic that went just wide of the far post (33’). 

South Africa nearly had their second goal when Sibusiso Zuma beat a defender on the right side and cut the ball back from the by-line to Benedict McCarthy, who had an open goal in front of him but could not get his shot off before the defence closed in on him (41’). 

The teams went into the interval with South Africa content with their one-goal lead. Slovenia, meanwhile, showed little sense of urgency despite the deficit and the possibility of elimination 45 minutes away. 

South Africa threatened early in the second half, with McCarthy firing a powerful shot on goal from 20 metres that Simeunovic pushed wide for a corner (50’). 

Things off the pitch were also not going in Slovenia’s favour, as coach Srecko Katanec was expelled from the touch line and spent the rest of the game in the stands. 

South Africa continued to look to Fortune to create from the left wing and on set pieces, and the Manchester United man almost set up a second goal when he served a wonderful cross to the near post for McCarthy, whose header hit the stanchion and went out for a goal kick (65’). McCarthy missed another golden chance seconds later when he received the ball near the penalty spot but struck his shot directly at Simeunovic (65’).  

Slovenia finally showed some life when Nastja Ceh headed a right-wing cross on goal, but South Africa goalkeeper Andre Arendse was able to slap it away for a corner (71’). Slovenia gave the Africans a scare when Amir Karic pounced on a bad give-away in the South African end and fired a powerful shot that went just over the bar (81’). 

Simeunovic did well to keep South Africa from sealing the win when he came off his line and saved a shot from Delron Buckley, who had gone free on goal (86’). But Simeunovic’s efforts alone would not be enough, and South Africa walked off the pitch with all three points and their first-ever victory in a FIFA World Cup finals.
