SOUTH AFRICA 2 : 3 SPAIN by FIFAworldcup.com

Spain had already reserved their spot in the second round, but they beat South Africa to finish top of Group B with a maximum nine points and earn a knockout round date with the Republic of Ireland. South Africa dramatically failed to qualify, as Paraguay will go through to face Germany.

South Africa fell behind three times in the match in Daejon, Korea. They equalized twice but were unable to get the all-important third, after Raul had scored his second goal. With news that Paraguay had come from behind to take a two-goal advantage (1:3) against Slovenia in the second half, South Africa tried to push for the equalizer, but it was not to be. And so, they are eliminated on goals scored and finish third in the group.

Match facts
Spain came out attacking and took an early lead through Raul, who may never score an easier FIFA World Cup goal. Gaizka Mendieta laid a through ball into the penalty area for Raul that was too strong, but when South Africa goalkeeper Andre Arendse slid out to scoop it up, he couldn¡¯t handle it cleanly. Raul managed to strip the ball from him, and he calmly dribbled inside the vacant goal box before finishing (0:1, 4¡¯).

South Africa tried to come back when MacBeth Sibaya fired a shot from 20 metres that Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas punched away (10¡¯).

Mendieta nearly scored himself when he received a pass from Joaquin at the penalty spot, but Mendieta¡¯s low shot was cleared off the line by Aaron Mokoena (13¡¯).

Fernando Morientes thought he had doubled Spain¡¯s lead when he knocked a header on goal from six metres, but Arendse dived to his right and reached behind him to bat the ball down and keep it from crossing the line (30¡¯).

A minute later, instead of being down two goals, South Africa were level. Siyabonga Nomvethe headed a cross from the right toward the near post where Benedict McCarthy left his feet to volley past Casillas (1:1, 31¡¯).

Just before the half-time interval, Mendieta was presented with a free kick just outside the area. From the left side, his swerving right-footer left Arendse stuck in his tracks, as the ball curled just inside the back post (1:2, 46¡¯+).

South Africa equalised again early in the second half when Lucas Radebe poked in a header at the back post after Spain¡¯s Romero sent an errant flick pass behind him from a corner kick (2:2, 53¡¯).

But within minutes, Raul had Spain back in the lead for a third time. Joaquin lofted a perfect cross into the area where Raul rose above his defender and nodded the ball to the right of Arendse (2:3, 56¡¯).

Ivan Helguera had a chance to give Spain some breathing room, but his header from six metres went wide (63¡¯). Then it was McCarthy trying to pull Bafana Bafana back again with a 20-metre shot that went past the far post (66¡¯).

Just after entering the match, Albert Luque came close to providing Spain¡¯s insurance. Raul fed Luque inside the area, and he took a touch before sending a right-foot shot that forced another diving save from Arendse (79¡¯).

Then Luis Enrique came close after his entrance when he ran onto a cross that slipped through from the left side, but he couldn¡¯t redirect the ball on net (83¡¯).

In the end, South Africa desperately pushed forward, but when they needed an equaliser the most, it never came and their FIFA World Cup was finished.

SLOVENIA 1 : 3 PARAGUAY by FIFAworldcup.com

Paraguay came from a goal behind with ten men to beat Slovenia in Seogwipo, Korea and earn a dramatic place in the second round. Needing to make up three points and three goals of difference, Paraguay got the goals they needed in tandem with South Africa's 2 : 3 loss to Spain. Paraguay go through to meet Germany in the knockout phase, while Spain face the Republic of Ireland.

Milenko Acimovic scored the 100th goal of the 2002 FIFA World Cup¢â in first half injury time to give Slovenia a lead, but Nelson Cuevas scored two and Jorge Campos added another second half goal to put the South Americans second in the group. Slovenia failed to earn a point in their FIFA World Cup debut, finishing last in the group.

Match facts

Paraguay carried the play in the early going. Their first chance came off the head of Jose Cardozo, who rose up to meet a free kick but sent his header just wide of the left post (9¡¯).

Things took a quick turn against the Paraguayans, however, as Carlos Paredes was cautioned for the second time after a rough tackle in midfield (22¡¯). Slovenia had their first chance shortly after, as Miran Pavlin fired a curling shot from inside the penalty arc that Paraguay goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert had no trouble with (26¡¯).

But even with 10 men, Paraguay were still the better attacking side. They had a pair of chances when Francisco Arce fired a long-range shot that Slovenia goalkeeper Mladen Dabanovic could only punch out and then Cardozo struck a downward header right at Dabanovic (30¡¯).

Slovenia nearly took the lead when Sebastjan Cimirotic dribbled into the area past a defender, but Chilavert made a fine one-handed reflex save (42¡¯). But the flamboyant keeper couldn¡¯t make an easy save when just before the interval Milenko Acimovic fired a shot from an extremely tight angle off Chilavert¡¯s foot and into the net (1:0, 46¡¯+).

Chilavert was back on form to make his first save of the second half, diving to his right to stop a shot from Milan Osterc after he had won the ball in the Paraguay penalty area (46¡¯). The keeper was fortunate minutes later when he seemed beaten by Acimovic¡¯s shot that bounced off the bar (52¡¯).

Nelson Cuevas brought Paraguay level with his first international goal shortly after coming on in place of Cardozo. The young River Plate forward used his dribble well to find space for himself in the area, and he fired a low shot to the left of Dabanovic and into the net (1:1, 66¡¯).

The Paraguayans seemed vitalised by the goal, and they soon had their second when Jorge Campos, another substitute, fired a low shot from 20 metres past Dabanovic and just barely inside the far post (1:2, 73¡¯).

Chilavert almost had a goal of his own when he fired a 35-metre free kick that Dabanovic could only push over for a corner kick (80¡¯). The next minute, the Slovenians were down to 10 men after Nastja Ceh was shown red for a rough tackle (81¡¯).

Then it was time for Cuevas to shine again. After receiving the ball a step outside the area, he beat two defenders on the dribble and fired a magnificent shot that hit off the underside of the crossbar and down into the goal (1:3, 84¡¯).
