한편 터키는 하칸 사스의 득점으로 전반전 말기에 가서 선제 득점을 차지했고, 하칸 사스는 경기 내내 공을 다루는 데 있어 뛰어난 기량을 보여 주었다. 그러나 기쁨은 잠깐에 그쳤다. 하프타임이 끝난 후 세계 최고의 축구 스타 중 하나로 꼽히는 호나우두가 동점골을 따낸 것이다. C조에 속한 브라질은 줄곧 득점 기회를 만들어 내며 상대편 진영을 위협했으나, 터키의 알파이 오잘란 선수가 루이장의 셔츠를 잡아당긴 반칙으로 브라질에게 페널티 킥의 기회가 주어질 때 까지 동점에 만족해야만 했다. 결국 히바우도는 페널티 킥을 성공시켜 다시 브라질 팀에 또 한 골의 득점을 선사했다. 잊지 못할 극적인 장면이 다수 연출되었던 오늘 경기에서는 터키 선수가 2명이나 퇴장 당하는 해프닝이 일어나기도 했다. 

전반전

경기가 시작되자 브라질은 강한 자신감과 정상급 기량으로 경기장을 종횡무진하면서 월드컵 4회 우승자에 대한 세계의 기대를 저버리지 않았다. 에메르손를 대신해 투입된 질베르루 실바는 몸싸움에 밀리지 않고 터키의 중앙 공격을 잘 차단해 주면서 에메르손의 공백으로 인한 미드필드 수비 불안을 말끔히 씻어 주었다. 

먼저 프리 킥을 얻은 브라질이 첫 골을 넣을 기회를 잡았다. 터키의 골키퍼 루스투 렉베르가 오른쪽 바이라인으로 나가는 모습을 보고 호나우딩요가 35미터 떨어진 빈 골문을 향해 날카로운 슛을 날렸으나 공은 높게 뜨면서 골문을 훌쩍 넘어가고 말았다(7분). 터키도 질세라 실바의 몸을 맞고 나온 공을 케르모글루가 그대로 슈팅으로 연결하였으나 역시 크로스바를 살짝 넘어가고 말았고 브라질 선수들은 가슴을 쓸어내려야 했다(20분). 

브라질은 멋진 세트 플레이로 또 한번의 절호의 득점 기회를 잡았으나 아쉽게 골로 연결시키지는 못했다. 오른쪽 측면에서 날라온 센터링을 히바우두가 잡아 호나우두에게 헤딩으로 넘겨 주었고 호나우두는 다시 주닝요 파울리스타에게 그리고 파울리스타는 20미터 지점에서 강슛을 날렸으나 그만 왼쪽 골대를 크게 벗어나고 말았다(29분). 

한편 루스투는 브라질의 강슛을 막아내며 멋진 선방을 펼쳤다. 왼쪽 측면에서 호나우두가 수비수를 제치고 히바우두에게 페널티 박스 안으로 공을 넘기며 완벽한 골 찬스를 만들어 주었으나 히바우두의 낮은 헤딩슛은 루스투의 오른손에 맞고 그만 멈추고 말았다(40분). 

마침내 터키는 선취골을 터뜨리며 멋지게 전반전을 마무리지었다. 종료 직전 인저리 타임에 일디라이 바스튀르크가 브라질 수비 뒤쪽에서 공을 잡아 하산 사스에게 패스해 주었고 하산은 골 에어리어 오른쪽 모서리에서 왼발 발리슛을 쏘아 브라질 골문 깊숙히 공을 내다 꽂았다( 0-1, 47분). 

후반전 

후반전이 시작되고 호나우두에게 또 한번의 결정적인 기회가 찾아왔지만 무산이 되면서 브라질에게 오늘 경기는 저주받은 것처럼 보였다. 그러나 올해의 FIFA 축구선수에 두번이나 선정된 바 있는 호나우두는 결국 히바우도가 오른쪽에서 길게 찔러준 센터링을 골문 6미터 앞에서 멋진 발리 슛으로 연결해 두번째 찾아온 기회를 놓치지 않았다. (1-1, 50분) 

브라질과 호나우두는 만회골이 터진 후 추가골을 넣는 것은 이제 문제도 아니라는 듯 한층 압박을 강화했다. 그러나 루스투 골키퍼는 대단했다. 55분 호나우두의 슛을 막아내더니 60분엔 문전으로 흘러오는 공을 루시우가 찔러넣은 것도 처리하고 62분엔 15미터 앞에서 주닝요 파울리스타가 때린 강슛마저 잡아냈다. 

루스투의 혼신을 다한 수비에 용기를 얻은 터키 선수들은 브라질의 압박을 제압하며 부지런히 그라운드를 뛰어다녔다. 그러나 터키가 브라질과 무승부를 기록할 수 있다는 희망이 가까워오는 순간 루스투 골키퍼가 결정적인 실수를 하고 말았다. 그가 클리어하려고 찬 공이 그만 호나우두와 교체되어 들어온 루이장의 발 끝에 걸리고 만 것이다. 브라질 클럽 그레미오에서 뛰고 있는 루이장은 곧장 터키 문전을 향해 쇄도해 들어갔고 뒤에서 따라오던 알파이 오잘란이 그를 뒤에서 잡아당겼다. 

경기 초반 한 차례 경고를 당한 바 있던 오잘란은 결국 퇴장을 당했다. 김영주 주심은 루이장이 페널티 에어리어 안 쪽에 넘어진 것을 확인하고 브라질의 페널티 킥을 선언했다. 결국 종료가 얼마남지 않은 87분 히바우도의 페널티 킥이 오른쪽 아래로 강하게 꽂히면서 스코어는 2-1로 뒤집어지고 말았다. (2-1, 87분) 

경기 내내 잘 싸웠던 터키 선수들은 두 명이 퇴장당하는 혈전을 치루고도 결국 승점을 기록하지 못한 채 경기장을 걸어나올 수 밖에 없었다.

Four-time champion Brazil were rescued by a late penalty as they pulled out a come-from-behind victory against Turkey in Ulsan, Korea. In one of the most thrilling and wild games of the tournament so far, the South Americans had to fight till the end to overcome a game Turkish side in breathtaking fashion. 
The Turks had taken a late first half lead through Hasan Sas, who was impressive on the ball throughout the match, but a world-class Ronaldo strike just after the break evened the score. Brazil dominated the Group C match in terms of dangerous chances, but it seemed they would have to settle for a point until Alpay Ozalan pulled Luizao down. Rivaldo converted the penalty kick, and two Turks were sent off in a dramatic finale to a memorable match. 

Brazil began the match looking every bit what the world has come to expect from the four-times world champions, moving the ball around the pitch with confidence and class. Worries about marking in midfield in the absence of Emerson eased somewhat with his replacement in the line-up, Gilberto Silva, breaking up Turkish counter-attacks with his physical marking.  

Brazil almost had the first goal shortly after kick-off when Turkey goalkeeper Recber Rustu left his area along the right-side by-line and sent a clearance right to Ronaldinho, who shot high and wide of the empty net from 35 metres (7’).  

The Brazilians had a scare when a hopeful shot by Tugay Kerimoglu took a sharp deflection off of Silva and skimmed just over the crossbar (20’). 

Juninho Paulista, who was Brazil’s best creator up the middle of the pitch in the first half, missed by only centimetres after some beautiful build up. It started with a cross from the right to Rivaldo, who headed down for Ronaldo, who in turn laid it back to Juninho Paulista for a 20-metre blast that went just wide of the left post (29’). 

Recber made a great reflex save to deny Brazil’s best chance of the half. Ronaldo beat a defender on the left side and served a perfect ball into the box for Rivaldo, but his downward header was stopped impressively with a stab of Rostu’s right hand (40’). 

Turkey took the lead against the run of play with the half about to expire when Yildiray Basturk picked out Hasan Sas behind the Brazilian defence, and the striker slammed the ball into the back of the net with a sweet left-foot volley from the right corner of the goal area (0:1, 47’+).  

As the second half got underway, it seemed for a moment that Brazil were a cursed team, as they could not score even with Ronaldo in free on goal (50’), but the twice FIFA World Footballer of the Year made up for it seconds later, when Rivaldo served a cross from the right side and Ronaldo scored from six metres with a beautiful lunging volley (1:1, 50’). Brazil and Ronaldo picked up the pressure even more after the goal, seemingly heartened by the knowledge that they could in fact put the ball into the net. But Rustu was magnificent, saving a shot from Ronaldo (55’), then stopping Lucio’s stab at a loose ball in front of goal (60’), and then denying Juninho Paulista’s rocket from 15 metres (62’).  

Led by Rustu’s heroics, Turkey absorbed the pressure, and the run of play began to even out. But when Turkey seemed to force the South Americans to settle for a draw, Rustu finally made a mistake. He struck a clearance right at Luizao, who had come on for Ronaldo. Luizao ran right at goal, and Alpay Ozalan pulled down the Gremio man from behind.  

Ozalan, who had already been booked earlier in the match, was sent off. The referee, Mr. Kim Young-Joo, judged that Luizao fell in the area and awarded Brazil a penalty kick, which Rivaldo buried into the lower-right corner (2:1, 87’). The Turks, who had battled hard throughout the match, were unlucky to walk away with just nine men and no point. 
 

중국은 전반전 26분에 중국 수비의 핵심인 순지하이가 부상으로 교체되면서 우승 기회에 많은 타격을 입었다. 한편 코스타리카는 오늘 우승으로써 C조에서 브라질과 함께 상위권으로 부상했고, 오는 6월 9일 있을 터키와의 경기에서도 선전하여 16강으로의 티켓을 확보하려 분투할 것이다. 중국의 보라 밀루티노비치 감독은 중국을 16강에 진출시키려면 8일 강호 브라질과의 경기에서 포인트를 만회해야만 하는 어려운 과제에 직면해 있다. 

전반전

중국은 경기가 시작되자 마자 코스타리카를 압박했으나 코스타리카는 침착하게 경기를 풀어 나갔고, 15분경에 이르러서부터 공격에 활기를 띠기 시작했다. 그들은 상대 진영을 향해 여러 차례 롱패스를 보내며 중국 선수들을 긴장시켰다. 

코스타리카가 먼저 마우리시오 솔리스의 재빠른 역습으로 절호의 득점 기회를 잡았으나, 중국의 골키퍼 장진은 까다로운 각도에서 날라오는 솔리스의 슛을 잘 잡아냈다(20분). 뒤이어 완초페가 아롤드 왈라세의 오른쪽 측면 센터링을 받아 다시 한번 득점 기회를 노렸으나 8미터 지점에서 그가 날린 헤딩슛은 중국 오른쪽 골대를 크게 벗어나고 말았다(28분). 

중국은 문전 처리에서 미숙한 면을 보였으나 미드필드에서 번번이 코스타리카를 좌절시켰고, 중간중간 순간적인 역습으로 코스타리카 진영을 위협했으나 발빠른 코스타리카 중앙 수비수들은 이들의 공격을 멋지게 차단하였다. 

비교적 느린 경기를 펼치며 의미없는 공방전을 펼치던 양팀은 득점 없이 전반전을 마쳤다. 

후반전 

후반 초반 15분간은 전반과 비슷한 양상으로 경기가 전개되었고, 양팀 모두 창의적으로 경기를 풀어나가지 못했다. 그러나 로날드 고메스가 완초페에게 발 뒤축으로 찔러준 볼을 완초페가 슈팅을 시도했으나 수비수에게 걸렸고, 이것이 완벽하게 고메스에게 다시 연결되었다. 이를 고메스가 골키퍼 왼쪽 위로 차 넣으면서 드디어 코스타리카가 경기의 균형을 깼다(0:1, 61분). 

첫 골을 넣기 위해 한 시간을 기다린 코스타리카는 4분 뒤 다시 두 번째 골을 성공시켰다. 골 포스트 왼쪽의 골 라인 근처에 서있던 고메스가 코너 킥을 이어받았고, 그는 등지고 있는 상태에서 돌아서서 골 포스트 근처에 공간을 확보하고 있던 마우리시오 라이트에게 센터링을 올려주었다. 그리고 라이트가 이것을 반대편 골 포스트를 향해 헤딩 슛을 성공시켰다(0:2, 65분). 

중국은 두 골을 허용한 후 더 많은 선수를 공격에 투입시키며 반격에 나섰지만 골을 얻지는 못했다. 중국의 코너 킥이 코스타 리카의 골문 앞에서 흘러나왔고 이를 수얀롱이 제대로 슈팅을 날릴 여유를 잃어버리면서 중국은 좋은 기회를 살리지 못했다(69분).

Despite being even at half-time, China kicked off their first-ever FIFA World Cup™ campaign with a loss to Costa Rica in Gwangju, Korea. The evenly played match was decided in a four-minute stretch in the second half by Ronald Gomez and Mauricio Wright goals. 

China's hopes were significantly damaged in just the 26th minute when their star defender Sun Jihai had to go off with an injury. Costa Rica join Brazil on top of Group C, and they will look to secure their place in the next round when they take on Turkey on 9 June. China and coach Bora Milutinovic face the unenviable task of turning around their FIFA World Cup against Brazil on the 8th.  

China pressured the Costa Rican end in the initial minutes of the first half, but the Central Americans settled down by the fifth minute and began to carry the attack with the occasional long-ball sprinkled into their short-passing game. 

Costa Rica had the first clear chance when a quick counter-attack sprung Mauricio Solis in alone on China goalkeeper Jiang Jin, who denied the Costa Rican midfielder’s shot from a tough angle (20’). Paulo Wanchope had the next opportunity for Costa Rica, but his header from eight metres after a right-wing cross from Harold Wallace went well wide of the right post (28’). 

Although China were denied any good looks at goal, they frustrated Costa Rica in midfield and broke loose on some dangerous counter-attacks, which the speedy Costa Rican central defenders did well to contain. 

The two sides went into the interval without a goal, a justified score due to the lack of imagination on the pitch. 

The opening quarter-hour of the second half continued with much the same pattern as the first, with neither side showing much creativity. But Costa Rica finally broke the game open when Ronald Gomez put a back-heel just inside the area to Wanchope, whose shot was blocked by a defender and sat up perfectly for Gomez, who fired high and left past Jiang Jin (0:1, 61’). 

After taking more than an hour to score the first goal, Costa Rica needed just four minutes to get their second. Gomez received a corner kick near the by-line on the left side. He spun and served a short cross to Mauricio Wright at the near post, and his downward header found the back of the net (0:2, 65’). 

The game opened up after the goals as China pushed more men forward, but could not get on the scoreboard. They failed to take advantage of a dangerous opportunity after a corner kick resulted in a loose ball in front of the Costa Rican goal, when Xu Yunlong could not get enough of his foot on the ball to steer it on goal (69’).
