COSTA RICA 2 : 5 BRAZIL by FIFAworldcup.com

Brazil finish top of Group C with a maximum nine points as they put paid to Costa Rica at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Korea. The Central Americans will not advance to the second round, as they end with the same number of points as Turkey, who downed China 3-0 to finish with a better goal difference.

Costa Rica became the first CONCACAF side to suffer defeat at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan¢â. Two early goals by Ronaldo put Costa Rica in the hole, and though they stayed in the match thanks to goals by Paulo Wanchope and Ronald Gomez, their need to attack left them vulnerable in back, and Brazil took advantage with goals from Edmilson, Rivaldo, and Junior.

Match facts

Costa Rica¡¯s Mauricio Wright had the first good chance of the match when he connected with Luis Marin¡¯s cross, but Wright sent his header from six metres well over the crossbar (9¡¯).

Costa Rica would rue that miss, as Brazil would take a two-goal lead before the quarter hour. The first one came when Edilson centred for Ronaldo, whose shot hit off Marin and went into the net (0:1, 10¡¯).

Ronaldo had another minutes later after he received a corner kick, fought his way around a defender and slotted a shot from six metres between Costa Rica goalkeeper Erick Lonnis and the near post (0:2, 13¡¯).

The Central Americans managed to maintain their composure after receiving the two quick goals. At one point, Ronald Gomez seemed to have Paulo Wanchope picked out in front of goal, but a defender cleared the cross away at the last instant. Minutes later, Wright had a great chance with a header, but he again put the ball over the bar (29¡¯).

With the half winding down, Brazil scored their third with a beautiful overhead kick by Edmilson at the edge of the goal area (0:3, 38¡¯), but Costa Rica came right back with one of their own. After some nice interplay at the top of the penalty area by Wanchope and Wright, ¡°El Chope¡± fired a shot past Brazil goalkeeper Marcos from eight metres (1:3, 39¡¯).

Brazil could have had their fourth on three separate occasions late in the half. First Rivaldo¡¯s sliding shot from in front of an open goal went over the bar (45¡¯). Then he hit the left post with a free-kick, and when the rebound bounced to Junior, he put his shot from the edge of the area wide of the right post (46¡¯+).

Ronaldo twice seemed set to add to his goal total early in the second half, but first Gilberto Martinez made a saving tackle, and then Ronaldo¡¯s shot from 15 metres sailed wildly over the bar (49¡¯).

Wanchope almost had his second goal when he ran past two defenders and Marcos only to see his shot from a tight angle cleared off the line by a defender (50¡¯). Soon after, Carlos Castro fired a powerful shot from just outside the area that Marcos pushed over the bar for a corner kick (53¡¯).

Costa Rica¡¯s aggressive attacking paid off when Walter Centeno drove a cross from the right side to Gomez at the far post, and his diving header from inside the goal area left Marcos with no chance (2:3, 56¡¯).

But before long, Brazil had extended the lead again. Junior sent a low cross from the right to Rivaldo, who sent his first-time shot from 10 metres past Lonnis (2:4, 62¡¯). Then Junior got into the scoring act when he got loose on goal and beat Lonnis at the near post (2:5, 64¡¯).

Ronaldo Fonseca had a gem of a chance to get a third goal for Costa Rica, but he shot wide of the far post from the edge of the goal area (77¡¯). That would be the story for the Costa Ricans as they watched time expire, along with their FIFA World Cup hopes.

TURKEY 3 : 0 CHINA by FIFAworldcup.com

Turkey advanced to the second round thanks to goals by Hasan Sas, Bulent Korkmaz and Umit Davala in their victory over China in Seoul, Korea. The Europeans finish second in Group C, after Brazil defeated Costa Rica. Turkey ended up on the same number of points as the Central Americans but go through on a superior goal-difference. China finish fourth in the group with three defeats and no goals scored.

Sas stole the ball from a pair of China defenders to open the scoring in the sixth minute, and Korkmaz doubled Turkey's lead up three minutes later. Davala¡¯s late goal clinched their place in the round of 16, where they will await the winner of Group H.

Match facts
The match began full of energy, with China seeking their first goal of the tournament and Turkey knowing their chances of going through to the second round could hinge on an abundance of goals scored.

Hasan Sas scored Turkey¡¯s first when he capitalised on a miscommunication between China¡¯s Li Weifeng and Wu Chengying. Sas stole the ball off the foot of Wu Chengying and then shot over the head of goalkeeper Jiang Jin (1:0, 6¡¯).

Sas¡¯ cross from the left side set up Turkey¡¯s second goal when Bulent Korkmaz out-leapt Li Xiaopeng at the back post and the ball popped over Jiang Jin¡¯s head into the net (2:0, 9¡¯).

China weren¡¯t going to roll over for Turkey though, and they soon had their best scoring chance of the tournament. Hao Haidong¡¯s driven cross found Yang Chen alone in front, but his first-timer slammed off the left post (28¡¯).

They threatened again when Du Wei was on the end of a deflected cross in the area, but his attempt never penetrated the Turkey defence.

By the end of the half, China appeared the more organised group, while Turkey were relaxed, content with the two-goal advantage they hoped would be enough to carry them through.

Sas brought Turkey back into the attack early in the second half when he had a clear look from 20 metres, but his shot was knocked down by Jiang Jin, diving to his left (50¡¯). Now established as the key to the Turkish attack, Sas sent a cross from the left side by-line through the goal box to Umit Davala, but his header was blocked by a defender.

China¡¯s hopes for a goal in their tournament finale took a blow when Shao Jiayi, who had just replaced Wu Chengying at half-time, was sent off for a tackle from behind on Emre Belozoglu (59¡¯).

Jiang Jin made his best save of the match when he dived to his right to bat away a header by Hakan Sukur from six metres at the back post (71¡¯).

China were able to create a nice build-up that resulted in Qu Bo finding space 25 metres out, but his hopeful shot was easily grabbed by Omer Catkic, who had replaced starting goalkeeper Recber Rustu prior to half-time (76¡¯).

Sas finally connected with a team-mate as he sent a cross from the left side to the back post for Davala, who ripped a well-placed shot off the back post and into the net (3:0, 85¡¯).

Turkey pressured China until the final whistle as Sas helped set up Ilhan Mansiz, who shot wide, and Sukur, who missed a gaping net from three metres.
