PORTUGAL 0 : 1 KOREA REPUBLIC by FIFAworldcup.com

Portugal were eliminated after suffering defeat to Korea Republic at Incheon Munhak Stadium in Korea. The USA, despite losing to Poland, will advance to the second round to play Mexico, while Korea will face Italy.

Portugal put themselves in a tough spot after Joao Pinto and Beto each were sent off. The only goal of the match came in the second half from Park Ji Sung. Portugal tried everything they could and pushed until the last minute, Korea never broke and came close to extending the lead late in the match, in a see of red that went wild when the final whistle blew.

Match facts

Korea began by putting pressure on the Portuguese, spurred on by their sea of supporters, and the Europeans seemed ill at ease with the speed of the co-hosts. But, as the pace of the match settled, Portugal began to assert themselves more, though it was still relatively even.

Despite the fact that there were no significant chances to speak of early on, there was drama when Joao Pinto was sent off for a nasty two-footed tackle on Ji Sung Park in the middle of the pitch (27¡¯).

The incident seemed to inspire both sides, and the Koreans had the ball in the net almost immediately. However, Jin Cheul Choi made contact with goalkeeper Vitor Baia just before the move, and the referee waived the score off (31¡¯).

Pauleta had the first chance for the Portuguese when the ball was sent into his path on the break. However, the hat-trick hero from the match before tried to lob the on-rushing goalkeeper but was unable to keep it on target (35¡¯).

Seol Ki Hyeon flashed into the Portuguese box to get the second half off to a livelier start, but his header from a free-kick flew just past the right post (47¡¯).

They got another header that seemed on target almost immediately, but Yoo Sang Chul had his ball deflected out for a corner, which came to nothing (50¡¯).

Kim Nam II had another chance, but his left-footer from 18 yards flashed across the face of goal and past the same right post (54¡¯).

Portugal got a tremendous effort from Pauleta when the striker dove away from goal and managed to get his head to a corner. It looked like it might sneak over Korea goalkeeper Lee Woon Jae, but he managed to bat it away (62¡¯).

The Portuguese suffered another blow when defender Beto received his second yellow for a mistimed tackle and was sent his marching orders by the referee (66¡¯).

Korea finally opened their account against nine-man Portugal when Park Ji Sung trapped the ball on his chest, beat Sergio Conceicao with a flick and then volleyed a left-foot shot through the legs of Baia (0 : 1, 70¡¯). It was a tremendous finish.

Facing elimination, Portugal tried to push forward for an equaliser, but down two players they were unable to put on much pressure. Luis Figo¡¯s free-kick curled agonizingly close to the post with the goalkeeper beaten (75¡¯).

Portugal however were shocked twice in the final minutes. First, Nuno Gomes was sprung free on the goalkeeper but failed to make contact with his shot from six metres out (85¡¯). Then Sergio Conceicao¡¯s shot was deflected off the inside of the Korean post with the goalkeeper beaten (89¡¯).

Conceicao¡¯s bullet from 10 metres out in the dying seconds was parried away by the goalkeeper, but Portugal could get nobody to the corner (93¡¯) as their hopes ended.

POLAND 3 : 1 USA by FIFAworldcup.com

The United States suffered defeat at the hands of Poland at Daejeon World Cup Stadium in Korea Friday but still advanced to the second round thanks to Korea Republic's victory over Portugal (0:1). USA will next face Mexico in the round of 16, while Korea will take on Italy.

Poland, who were eliminated before the match even started, jumped ahead early on goals by Emmanuel Olisadebe and Pawel Kryszalowicz, and Maciej Zurawski added his name to the score sheet in the second half. Landon Donovan scored the lone goal in the closing minutes for the USA.

Match facts

With nothing to play for, Poland stunned everyone with two goals in the opening five minutes. From a corner kick, Emmanuel Olisadebe had a header blocked by a United States defender, but the ball was never cleared by the defence and Olisadebe had another crack, this time striking it off the underside of the crossbar for the early goal (1:0, 3¡¯).

Just after the U.S. had a potential equaliser from Landon Donovan disallowed when the referee Mr. Lu Jun called him for pushing, Poland doubled their lead. Jacek Krzynowek crossed into the area from the left side, and Pawel Kryszalowicz met the ball at the goal box, sending a first-time shot past Friedel at the near post (2:0, 5¡¯).

Aside from the disallowed header from Donovan, the U.S. had their first good chance when Brian McBride had a 12-metre header saved by goalkeeper Radoslaw Majdan after Earnie Stewart¡¯s corner kick (10¡¯).

Poland were nearly ahead three goals, but were denied twice by Friedel, who had help from his right post. Krzynowek ran onto a deflected pass in the area, but the U.S. keeper saved his 10-metre drive. Friedel left a rebound for Maciej Zurawski, who sent a shot to the middle of the net only to have the sliding keeper get back in time to deflect the ball off his post and away (30¡¯).

A long-range shot from U.S. midfielder John O¡¯Brien tested Majdan after deflecting off two different defenders, but the keeper was able to get down and make the stop (40¡¯).

Poland attacked at the outset of the second half as they had in the first, but this time Friedel was up to the task, stopping the threat before a shot could be taken.

Soon, though, Poland were back on the defensive, content to wait for the counter. And it was a counter-attack that resulted in their third goal. A Kryszalowicz shot was deflected out for a corner kick and Marcin Zewlakow finished with a near-post header to increase Poland¡¯s margin to three (3:0, 66¡¯).

The U.S. came back with their best chance when Claudio Reyna chipped into the penalty area for Donovan, who dropped a pass back to Joe-Max Moore, whose 12-metre drive was stopped valiantly by Majdan. Clint Mathis chipped the rebound over the bar (67¡¯).

After U.S. defender Tony Sanneh took down Kryszalowicz, Poland were given an opportunity to put the game totally out of reach from the penalty spot. But Friedel, who had already denied a Korean penalty kick in their earlier meeting, dived left to stop Zurawski (76¡¯).

Mathis then came close when he got on the end of a Cobi Jones cross at the back post but banged his shot off the near post (82¡¯). Moments later, the U.S. had finally broken through. Mathis flicked a header to his left where Donovan placed a right-foot volley into the right-side netting (3:1, 83¡¯).
