일본 니이가타에서 열린 아일랜드와 카메룬의 경기는 상당히 힘든 조 중 하나라고 생각되는 E조의 첫 경기였다. 양팀 모두 득점으로 연결시킬 수 있는 공격 기회를 얻었지만, 결국 파트릭 음보아(카메룬)와 매트 홀랜드(아일랜드)만이 골을 성공시켰고 경기는 무승부로 끝나고 말았다. 

경기장은 온통 초록색 대표팀 티셔츠를 입은 아일랜드 팬들과 현란한 아프리카 의상 및 장신구로 치장한 카메룬 관중들의 열기로 가득했다. 오늘 경기에서는 전반전과 후반전이 정반대의 대비를 이루었다고 할 수 있다. 전반전에서는 '불굴의 사자' 카메룬의 활약이 두드러졌다. 그러나 후반전에서 맥카시 감독이 이끄는 아일랜드팀은 로이 킨 선수의 부재에도 불구하고 카메룬을 바짝 추적했고, 결국 동점골을 얻어 냈다. 

전반전

두 팀 모두 신중하게 탐색전을 펼치던 초반, 전반 7분 경 아일랜드의 매트 홀랜드가 공을 걷어내기 위한 태클을 시도하다가 공 대신에 카메룬의 미드필더인 마르크 비비앙 포에의 오른쪽 무릎을 걷어차고 말았다. 이에 분개한 카메룬 팀은 더욱 선전했고, 이 때부터 전반전을 주도하기 시작했다. 

19분 경, 첫번째 좋은 기회를 만들어낸 장본인은 사무엘 에투였다. 에투는 패트릭 음보마와 함께 2:1 패스를 성공적으로 이끌어 가며 달려드는 수비수들을 피해 진격했다. 이들은 페널티 지역으로 돌진해 들어가려고 했지만, 셰이 기븐 골키퍼가 달려 나와서 가까스로 공을 잡아 냈다. 

에투는 이후 또 좋은 기회를 만들어 냈다. 전반 32분, 에투는 골 에어리어의 모서리 부분에서 몸을 돌려 기븐 골키퍼의 머리 위로 공을 띄워 슈팅을 했지만, 골대를 벗어나고 말았다. 

계속해서 에투는 더욱 위협적인 플레이를 펼쳤으며, 곧 침체되어 있던 경기의 분위기는 활기를 띄기 시작했다. 에투는 오른쪽 측면에서 사이드 라인을 따라 수비를 돌파한 후 음보마에게 패스했고, 음보마는 그 공을 받아 골키퍼가 나와 비어있는 골문에 가볍게 밀어 넣어 선취골을 기록했다. (0-1, 전반 39분). 

하프 타임을 앞둔 전반 45분 경, 아일랜드의 이안 하트가 찬 프리킥은 리고베르트 송의 실책으로 어이 없이 카메룬의 골문으로 빨려 가는 듯 했다. 그러나 카메룬은 부카르 알리움 골키퍼의 선방으로 가까스로 자책골을 면할 수 있었다. 

이것이 전반전에서 카메룬이 아일랜드에게 허용한 유일한 기회였다. 

후반전 

아일랜드는 후반 경기가 시작되면서부터 경기를 동점으로 만들기 위해 부단히 노력했고, 후반 초반에 거의 득점에 성공할 뻔했다. 이안 하트가 올린 센터링을 받은 케빈 킬반이 번개 같은 헤딩슛을 날려보았으나 볼은 반대편 골포스트에서 크게 벗어났다.(후반 4분) 

카메룬의 제레미가 아일랜드 진영에서 뺏은 공을 득점으로 연결시키는데 실패하자마자 아일랜드의 매트 홀랜드는 드디어 동점골 기록에 성공했다. 왼쪽 진영에서 킬반이 날린 센터링을 카메룬이 제대로 걷어내지 못하자 홀랜드는 25미터 거리 밖에서 강한 오른발 슛을 날리면서 공을 왼쪽 구석으로 쏘아 넣었다(1-1, 후반 7분). 

동점골이 터지면서 아일랜드의 공격이 살아나기 시작했다. 아일랜드의 로비 킨의 슛은 거의 득점으로 기록될 뻔했지만, 리고베르트 송이 이를 차단하고 골키퍼 부카르 알리움이 선방하면서 카메룬은 겨우 동점을 유지할 수 있었다(후반 18분). 

후반에서는 그 어느 팀도 상대팀을 압도하지 못했다. 하지만 경기가 막바지로 접어들면서 아일랜드의 움직임이 주로 활기를 띠었다. 

로비 킨은 카메룬 수비의 실책을 틈타 몇 번 더 추가 득점을 시도했다. 페널티 지역 끝에서 킨은 수비수가 걷어낸 공을 원터치로 차분히 받아내면서 감각적인 오른발 슛을 날려보았지만, 그의 슈팅은 반대편 골포스트를 맞고 튀어 나갔다(후반 39분). 

경기 종료 직전 스티븐 리드가 강한 프리킥을 날리면서 아일랜드는 다시 한 번 승리할 기회를 맞았으나 카메룬 골키퍼 알리움의 선방으로 볼은 골포스트 위로 넘어가 버렸다(후반 45분). 

아일랜드는 이제 E조에서 가장 유력한 강팀인 독일과의 경기를 앞두고 있으며, 카메룬은 6월 6일 일본 사이타마에서 사우디 아라비아와 2차전을 가질 예정이다.

The 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™ kicked off in Japan with Cameroon and Ireland fighting to a tense Group E draw in Niigata. Both sides had their fair share of good chances, but Patrick Mboma and Matt Holland were the only names on the score sheet in the end. 

Watched by colourful fans on both sides, it was a match of contradictory halves, as the Indomitable Lions looked far and away the better side in the first. However, Mick McCarthy’s team, without sent home captain Roy Keane, recovered bravely after the break and drew level early in the second half. The Irish will now face group-favourites Germany, while Cameroon take on Saudi Arabia in Saitama on 6 June. 

A cautious start by both teams produced little in the opening minutes, until Ireland’s Matt Holland dived in hard at Marc-Vivien Foe, getting a piece of the ball but more of the Cameroon midfielder’s right knee (7’). The collision seemed to spark the Africans, as they began to gain an edge in possession. 

Samuel Etoo created the first real chance of the match when he worked a one-two with Patrick Mboma near midfield to get free. As he raced into the box, charging Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given came out hard to smother the attempt (19’). 

Etoo produced another strong chance after running onto a lob into the right side of the penalty area. At the corner of the goal box, he turned and lofted a shot over Given, but off target and out for a goal kick (32’). 

Etoo began to create more danger from that point on and was integral in breaking the deadlock when he beat a defender at the by-line on the right side, and his pass found the foot of Mboma, who easily slotted the ball into the empty net (0:1, 39’). 

Late in the half, Ireland’s Ian Harte whipped a free kick into the box from the right side that was nearly knocked into the Cameroon goal by defender Rigobert Song, but goalkeeper Boukar Alioum smothered the ball to prevent the own goal (45’). 

But that was the only real chance allowed by Cameroon in the first 45 minutes, as they did their part to earn the lead going into the dressing room. 

The hard-working Irish side started the second half in search of an early goal and almost had one when Kevin Kilbane’s glancing header from Ian Harte’s cross skidded wide of the back post (49’). 

Just after Geremi narrowly missed the far post after winning possession deep in the Irish half, Ireland found their equaliser through Matt Holland. Kilbane’s cross from the left side was only half cleared by Cameroon, and Holland drilled a solid right-footer from 25 metres into the left corner (1:1, 52’).  

The goal really sparked Ireland and they almost went ahead when a ball played into the goal mouth for Robbie Keane was blocked towards goal by Rigobert Song, and only a desperate dive from goalkeeper Boukar Alioum kept the game level (63’). 

Through most of the second half, neither side consistently had the better run of play, but Ireland seemed to sense victory as the match drew to a close and gained momentum. 

Robbie Keane looked to take advantage of some more poor work by the Cameroon defence. Standing at the edge of the penalty area, Keane coolly controlled a driven clearance with one touch, and his quick right-footed drive crashed off the far post (84’). 

As the clock neared full time, Ireland had another opportunity to go ahead but Steven Reid’s powerful free kick was tipped over the bar by Alioum (90’).

전반전

독일은 초반부터 공격적으로 경기를 풀어나갔고 사우디 아라비아는 독일의 맹공에 허둥댔다. 독일은 상대 수비를 무너뜨리기 위해 계속해서 공격을 시도했다. 

독일의 카르스텐 얀커는 경기가 시작된지 얼마 안되어 페널티 지역에서 패스를 받아 거의 골을 성공시킬 뻔했으나, 회전이 심하게 걸린 슛은 골 포스트 밖으로 빗겨 갔다(2분). 독일은 계속 공격을 시도했고 미하엘 발락이 치열한 경쟁 속에서 확보한 볼을 페널티 박스 정면에서 20미터 중거리 슛으로 연결했으나 골 포스트를 벗어나고 말았다(16분). 

그리고 발락이 왼쪽 측면에서 센터링해준 볼이 골문 앞에서 바운드가 되었고 미로슬라프 클로세가 이 볼을 사우디 아라비아의 골키퍼 모하메드 알다예야의 왼쪽으로 헤딩 슛을 성공시켰다(1:0 20분). 

독일은 두 번째 골을 위해 계속해서 몰아 부쳤다. 다시 발락이 왼쪽에서 센터링해준 볼을 역시 이번에도 클로세가 알다예야의 왼쪽으로 헤딩 슛을 성공시켰다(2:0 25분). 

세 번째 골 역시 비슷했으나 클로세가 아닌 다른 선수의 헤딩으로 나왔다. 이번에는 크리스티안 지게가 왼쪽에서 올려준 볼을 발락이 알다예야의 왼쪽으로 헤딩 슛을 성공시켰다(3:0 40분). 

독일은 네 번째 골을 위해 전술을 바꾸었다. 오른쪽에서 낮게 센터링한 볼을 클로제가 얀커에게 영리하게 어시스트를 해주었고 이 볼은 잔인하게도 알다예야의 다리 사이를 지나 골이 되고 말았다(4:0 46분). 

후반전 

전반전에서 경기를 완전히 장악한 독일은 경고와 부상을 경계하며 서서히 후반전에 돌입했고, 계속해서 사우디 진영의 페널티 에어리어로 진격하며 위험한 상황을 연출해냈다. 

후반 첫 골도 클로제에게서 나왔다. 그는 오른쪽 측면에서 날라오는 센터링을 헤딩슛으로 연결하며 이날 밤 자신의 세 번째 골이자 이번 대회 첫 번째 해트 트릭을 기록하는 영예를 차지했다. 이로써 그는 13회 국제 경기 출전에 11골을 올리며 독일 국가 대표로서 자신의 세 번째 해트 트릭을 기록하게 되었다(5:0, 후반24분). 

클로제가 축하를 다 받기도 전에 이를 시샘하듯 토마스 링케의 골이 터져 나왔다. 링케는 오른쪽 측면에서 날라오는 프리 킥을 뛰어오르면 헤딩슛을 날렸고 공은 그대로 사우디 골문을 흔들어 놓았다. 이날 밤 독일의 다섯 번째 헤딩골이 기록되는 순간이었다(6:0, 후반28분). 

후반 22분 얀커를 대신해 투입된 올리버 비어호프도 득점 기회를 놓칠 수 없었다. 그는 미드필드에서 수비수를 제치고 달려 나오며 공을 받아 25미터 떨어진 지점에서 낮은 슛으로 사우디아라비아 골문의 왼쪽 모서리로 공을 내다 꽂았다(7:0, 후반39분). 

경기 종료 직전 인저리 타임에는 베른트 슈나이더가 20미터 지점에서 꺽어지는 프리 킥을 날려 사우디 골문 상단 오른쪽 모서리로 기막히게 들어가는 골을 성공시키며 경기를 멋지게 마무리했다(8:0, 경기 시작91분). 

같은 날 오후 함께 E조에 속한 아일랜드와 카메룬의 경기가 1-1의 무승부로 끝난 직후 이와 같이 전례 없는 대승을 거둔 독일은 의심의 여지 없이 당당하게 E조의 선두로 나섰다.

Germany recorded their largest-ever margin of victory in a FIFA World Cup™ match against Saudi Arabia at the Sapporo Dome in Japan on Saturday. Miroslav Klose’s hat-trick led the way for Germany, who scored four goals in each half in their opening game of the tournament. 

The Germans displayed mechanical timing in the first half, producing three headed goals, all to the left of Saudi Arabian goalkeeper Mohammed Al Deayea from left-side crosses. One goal each from Michael Ballack, Carsten Jancker, Thomas Linke, Oliver Bierhoff and Bernd Schneider filled out the scoring. After Saturday afternoon’s 1-1 draw between Ireland and Cameroon, Germany move to the top of Group E.  

The Germans asserted themselves right from the start, and Saudi Arabia melted under the onslaught, as Germany cut through the opposing defence time after time. 

Jancker almost opened the scoring shortly after kick-off when he received a pass in the area with his back to the goal, but his spinning shot went wide of the far post (2’). Germany kept attacking, and Ballack thought he had a gift when a fight for the ball on the edge of the area resulted in the ball rolling out to him in space, but his effort from 20 metres sailed over the crossbar (16’). 

The inevitable German goal came when Ballack knocked in a cross from the left wing that bounced in the area up to the head of Klose, who directed it into the net to the left of Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Deayea (1:0, 20’). 

Germany wasted no time getting their second. Again it was Ballack who sent the cross from the left, and again it was Klose who headed it into the Saudi net, again to Al Deayea’s left (2:0, 25’). 

The third goal was more of the same but with different names. This time it was Christian Ziege serving from the left, with Ballack heading to the left side of Al Deayea (3:0, 40’). 

Germany changed up the formula for the fourth goal. The cross came from the right side, Klose flicked it on cleverly to Jancker, who ferociously finished passed Al Deayea (4:0, 46+). 

With the game already well in hand and with Germany starting to concern themselves more with not picking up bookings or injuries, the Germans still managed to create dangerous situations by repeatedly putting the ball into the Saudi penalty area. 

Klose benefited from one of those dangerous situations, heading in a cross from the right side for his third goal of the night, the first hat-trick of this year’s finals. He has now scored 11 goals in 13 full international matches. The hat-trick was his third for the German national team (5:0, 69’). 

Linke got into the scoring act almost before Klose had finished celebrating. Linke rose up to head a corner kick from the right side into the net, the fifth headed goal on the night for the Germans (6:0, 73’). 

Bierhoff, who had come on for Janker in the 67th minute, also had his chance to celebrate. He ran onto a ball from out of midfield and, as he fell down with a defender in his hip pocket, he fired a low shot into the left corner of the goal from 25 metres (7:0, 84’). 

Schneider capped off the scoring in injury time with a curling free-kick from 20 metres into the upper-right corner (8:0, 91+’).
