독일은 이번 카메룬과의 경기 후반전에서 두 골을 득점하며 승리를 거두어 E조의 선두로 16강에 진출하게 되었다. 또한 같은 조의 아일랜드도 같은 시간 열린 경기에서 사우디아라비아를 누르고 16강에 진출한다. 

독일이 얻은 득점은 교체로 들어온 마르코 보데와 이번 본선에서 총 5골의 득점을 모두 헤딩으로 기록한 미라슬로프 클로제 선수가 올린 것이었다. 오늘 경기는 반칙과 몸싸움으로 점철된 경기였고, 양팀은 각각 8번의 경고를 받고 선수 1명씩이 퇴장당하는 등 웃지 못할 광경이 벌어졌다. 

전반전 

양팀 모두 조심스럽게 시작했으나, 전반 10분, 독일은 미로슬라프 클로제로부터 받은 패스를 미카엘 발락이 슛을 했으나 골문에서 벗어났다. 

그러나, 카메룬은 물러서지 않고 살로몬 올렘베가 25미터 전방에서 매우 좋은 기회를 맞았다. 전반 13분, 올렘베는 올리버 칸이 막으려고 골문을 버리고 앞으로 나오자, 머뭇거리다가 올리버 칸의 정면으로 공을 차버리고 말았다. 마르세이유에서 활동하고 있는 올렘베는 칸에 맞고 다시 튀어나온 공을 잡아 크로싱을 날리려고 했으나 칸의 손에 맞고 골문쪽으로 꺾였으며, 칸은 그 공을 잡아서 위기를 막아냈다. 

전반 27분, 칸은 피에르 워메가 왼쪽에서 25미터 중거리 슛을 찼을 때 다시 한번 위기를 맞게 되었다. 그가 펀칭해서 걷어낸 공은 독일 수비수의 몸에 맞았고, 다시 튀어나와 아슬아슬하게 골문을 피해 코너 아웃되어 코너킥을 허용했다. 전반 28분, 계속 압박해 나가던 카메룬은 리고베르트 송이 아주 좋은 기회를 맞았으나, 가까운 거리에서 한 헤딩이 가까운 쪽 골대를 약간 벗어나고 말았다. 

전반 36분, 크리스티앙 지게가 찬 프리킥은 부카르 알리움 골키퍼의 선방이 없었다면 골로 연결되었을 것이다. 지게가 왼쪽 모서리 부분에서 찬 프리킥은 앞으로 나와있던 알리움 골키퍼가 뒷걸음질하며 뛰어올라 크로스바 밖으로 공을 걷어내 버렸다. 

독일은 무승부만 거두어도 16강에 진출할 수 있는 유리한 입장이었지만, 전반이 거의 끝나는 상황에서도 왠지 두려움을 느끼고 있는 것 같았다. 독일 선수들은 여러 번 평점심을 잃고 흥분했으며, 전반 40분 수비수 카스텐 라멜로프는 3분간 2번의 옐로우 카드를 받아 퇴장당했다. 이러한 그의 행동은 독일 팀에 큰 부담이 되었다. 

후반전 

후반전에 카르스텐 얀커 대신에 마르코 보데를 투입하기로 한 결정은 독일에게 있어 너무나 적절한 선택이었다. 클로제의 공간 패스를 받은 보데가 카메룬 수비를 뚫고 들어가 침착하게 슈팅을 성공시키자 10명이 뛰는 독일이 앞서나가기 시작했다. (1-0, 50분) 

후반전 들어 카메룬의 공세가 주춤했다. 불굴의 사자, 카메룬이 전반전에 보여줬던 공격의 집중도가 떨어지면서 칸 골키퍼를 위협할 만한 슈팅이 나오지 않았다. 

카메룬에게 기회가 찾아왔다. 제레미의 프리킥이 로랭의 머리로 향했고 골문을 12미터 앞둔 상태에서 그가 헤딩슛한 공이 골포스트 근처에서 바운드되고 말았다. 뒤이어 패트릭 음보마가 달려들면서 바운드된 공을 찼으나 넘어진 칸 골키퍼의 정면에 걸리고 말았다. (73분) 

후반전 들어 몸싸움이 거칠어지면서 경고가 난무해졌다. 패트릭 쉬포가 마침내 퇴장을 당하자 양 팀의 선수 수가 똑같아 졌다. 독일의 공격이 수위를 높이자 이번 대회에서 득점 선두에 올라있는 클로제가 그의 다섯번째 골을 기록했다. 미카엘 발락이 백포스트에서 띄워준 공을 마크없이 달려들던 클로제가 정확히 머리로 연결, 알리움 골키퍼의 옆을 갈랐고 2라운드 진출을 위한 카메룬의 희망이 물거품처럼 사라졌다. 

알리움 골키퍼는 그러나 끝까지 포기하지 않고 골문 앞 8미터에서 발락이 헤딩한 공을 왼쪽으로 몸을 날려 잡아내며 독일의 세번째 골을 저지했다. (88분). 인저리 타임에서도 알리움은 옌스 예레미스의 20미터 중거리슛을 쳐냈다. (91분) 

마침내 휘슬이 울리고 카메룬은 FIFA 월드컵 한국/일본™에서의 마지막 경기를 끝냈다.

Germany scored two second half goals against Cameroon to end up atop Group E and in the second round. The Republic of Ireland join them in the knockout phase thanks to their victory over Saudi Arabia.  

The goals came from substitute Marco Bode and Miroslav Klose, who tallied his fifth of the tournament so far, all from his head. It was a foul-tempered match with both teams being shown eight yellow cards and finishing the match a man short. 

With both teams starting cautiously, Germany proved a bit braver at the outset with Michael Ballack stepping up from midfield to receive a pass from Miroslav Klose before shooting wide (10’). 

Cameroon weren’t sitting back, however, and they very nearly went ahead when Salomon Olembe was put into the clear from 25 metres. Olembe hesitated as Oliver Kahn charged out of the net and his shot went straight into the keeper. The Marseille man recovered the rebound and his attempted cross was batted toward the goal, but Kahn recovered in time to smother the threat (13’). 

Kahn was put to the test again on a Pierre Wome free kick from 25 metres on the left side. The German keeper punched clear, but the ball caromed off his own man and out for a corner kick (27’). While still pressuring, Rigobert Song was given a clear opportunity, but his short-range header at the near post went inches wide (28’). 

Christian Ziege could have put Germany ahead with a free kick were it not for a brilliant save from goalkeeper Boukar Alioum. Ziege’s effort was headed for the top-left corner, but Alioum leapt backward and parried the ball over the crossbar (36’).  

Though still assured of a spot in the next round with a draw, Germany seemed to grow frustrated as the half drew to a close. Tempers flared on a few occasions and German defender Carsten Ramelow cost his team when he was sent off after collecting his second caution in the space of three minutes (40’).  

The half-time interval, as well as the insertion of Marco Bode for Carsten Jancker, seemed to come at a perfect time for Germany. Bode broke through the Cameroon defence onto Klose’s perfect pass and calmly placed his shot into the side-netting, giving 10-men Germany the lead (0:1, 50’). 

The break also seemed to dash all of Cameroon’s momentum, as the Indomitable Lions could not connect on offence and were not able to challenge Kahn as they had in the first half. 

Cameroon was finally able to generate a second-half chance when a Geremi free kick found the head of Lauren, but his 12-metre shot bounced off the near post. Patrick Mboma raced to the rebound and his sliding shot was straight at the fallen Kahn (73’). 

The cautions kept flying in the second half and manpower was equalised when Patrick Suffo was sent off (77’). At even strength, Germany quickly went forward and Klose, the tournament’s leading scorer, netted his fifth. Michael Ballack crossed to the back post, where a wide-open Klose knocked the ball past Alioum to all but end Cameroon’s fading hopes for the second round (0:2, 80’). 

Alioum had not given up though, as he robbed Ballack of a third for Germany when he dived left to save a header from eight metres (88’). Alioum also needed to parry a Jens Jeremies drive from 20 metres in stoppage time (91’). 

In the end, Cameroon were a defeated side and had played their last FIFA World Cup match in Korea/Japan.

아일랜드는 경기 초반에 리드를 잡는데 성공하였다. 매트 홀랜드가 좌측 측면에서 크로스한 공은 사우디 아라비아의 페널티 에어리어 안에 자리잡고 있던 로비 킨에게 흘러 들었다. 로비 킨은 상대 수비수의 아무런 제지를 받지 않고 홀랜드의 크로스를 받아 이를 발리 슛으로 연결하여 모하메드 알다예아 골키퍼가 지키고 있는 사우디 아라비아의 골문을 뒤흔들었다 (0-1, 7분). 

비가 내리는 관계로 선수들은 팀 전술을 적절히 구사하는데 어려움을 겪었지만, 아일랜드는 선제골 이후 사우디 아라비아를 계속 압박해 나갔다. 그러나 별다른 성과를 거두지 못하고 주도권은 사우디 아라비아에게 넘어 갔다. 사우디 아라비아는 알 하산 알야미를 앞세워 아일랜드를 압박하기 시작하였다. 알 하산 알야미는 아일랜드 선수들을 제치고 놀라운 문전 쇄도를 펼쳤으나 슈팅으로 연결시키지는 못했다. 

반면 아일랜드는 킨과 케빈 킬반에게 팀의 공격을 의지하였다. 그러나 1골의 리드를 지켜내기만 한다면 2라운드 진출을 이룰 수 있다는 생각때문이지, 공격에 가담하는 선수들의 숫자는 크게 제한된 모습이었다. 

사우디는 전반전 종반, 모하메드 알 자하니가 상대 골문으로 쇄도하면서 결정적인 득점 기회를 얻었지만, 그의 슛은 아일랜드의 셰이 기븐 골키퍼의 정면으로 향하고 말았다 (42분). 

후반전 

로비 킨이 12미터 거리에서 돌면서 슛하는 장면은 전반과 비슷했지만 이번엔 오른쪽으로 벗어나고 말았다(49분). 

한 골을 더 추가해야 2라운드 진출을 확정할 수 있었던 아일랜드는 공격의 고삐를 늦추지 않았고 결국 골을 성공시켰다. 개리 브린이 왼쪽에서 넘어온 공을 7미터 거리에서 발리 슛으로 차 넣은 것이다(0-2. 62분). 

후반 시작과 함께 교체 투입된 나이얼 퀸은 개리 켈리가 넘긴 공을 받아 페널티 지역 안으로 몰고 가며 세 번째 골을 노렸지만 실패했다(63분). 몇 분 뒤 다시 퀸이 발리 슛을 시도했지만 골문을 크게 벗어나고 말았다(71분). 

사우디아라비아는 곧바로 최고의 기회를 잡았다. 알야미가 헤딩슛을 아일랜드 골문의 위쪽 구석으로 날렸는데 기븐 골키퍼의 선방에 막혔다(75분). 

아일랜드는 경기 막판 한 골을 보태며 승리를 자축했다. 대미언 더프가 알 데예 골키퍼에게 바로 날아가는 슛을 했고 골키퍼가 이 공을 제대로 잡지 못하면서 공은 골문으로 미끄러져 들어가고 말았다(0-3, 87분).

Ireland got an early Robbie Keane strike and second half goals from Gary Breen and Damien Duff to hold off Saudi Arabia and finish second in Group E. The result, along with Germany's defeat of Cameroon, means that the Germans and the Irish are through to the second round. 

For the first time in their history, Ireland scored more than a single goal in a FIFA World Cup™ finals match. They will take on the Group B winner in Suwon, Korea feeling confident after drawing twice and winning their third match. The Saudis go home eliminated, having taken zero points and scoring no goals.  

Ireland wasted no time jumping into the lead. Matt Holland served a looping cross from the left to an unmarked Robbie Keane, who was standing near the penalty spot, and the Leeds United man struck his volley past Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Deayea (0:1, 7’). 

Although the wet conditions limited the teams’ technical play, Ireland maintained some pressure in the moments following the goal, but the run of play soon evened out. Saudi Arabia began to apply some pressure of their own, led by forward Al Hasan Al Yami’s enterprising runs, including one in which he worked his way through a crowd of defenders only to be dispossessed just before he could get a shot away. 

Ireland, meanwhile, continued to look to Keane and Kevin Kilbane in the attack, but the Saudi Arabian defence held firm, intent on not suffering a similar embarrassment to what they experienced in their 8-0 thrashing at the hands of Germany. 

Saudi Arabia’s best chance came when Mohammed Al Jahani was sprung loose on goal, but he sent his shot right at Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given (42’). 

Robbie Keane almost opened the second half as he did the first when he swivelled and shot from 12 metres, but this time his shot was wide to the right (49’) 

Ireland needed a second goal to be certain of qualification for the second round, and they got it from Gary Breen, who scored with a stabbing volley from seven metres after a cross from the left (0:2, 62’). Ireland now held a lead that, if it stood up, would guarantee them a berth in the round of 16.  

Ireland almost scored their third goal when half-time substitute Niall Quinn went close with his effort from a step inside the area after receiving a cross from Gary Kelly (63’). Minutes later, it was again Quinn who had a chance, this time sending his volley well wide of the mark (71’). 

Shortly after, Saudi Arabia had one of their best chances of the match. Al Yami sent a header toward the top corner of the Ireland goal, but Given did well to save it (75).  

Ireland put an exclamation point on the victory with a goal in the closing minutes. Damien Duff fired a shot right at Al Deayea, but the Saudi keeper couldn’t handle the wet ball, and it slipped through his gloves and into the net (0:3, 87’).
