오늘 일본 니이가타에서 열린 G조 첫 경기에서 크로아티아의 수비수 보리스 지브코비치가 멕시코의 콰우테모크 블랑코에게 가한 파울은 크로아티아에게는 치명적인 결과를 가져다 주었다. 이 파울로 인해 지브코비치는 이번 FIFA 월드컵™에서 첫 번째로 퇴장을 당하는 불명예를 입었고, 게다가 멕시코에게 페널티 킥까지 내주어 결국 0-1의 패배를 초래하는 불씨가 되었다. 

상황을 설명하자면 멕스코의 블랑코 선수는 하레드 보르게티가 발뒤꿈치로 차서 띄운 공을 받아 골문으로 진격하려는 찰나였다. 그러나 바로 이 때 지브코비치가 블랑코 선수 뒤에서 뛰어들어 블랑코 선수를 그라운드에 넘어뜨렸다(경기시작 후 60분). 98년 프랑스 FIFA 월드컵에서 많은 활약을 했던 블랑코 선수는 곧 다시 일어나 직접 페널티 킥을 했고, 블랑코의 슈팅은 크로아티아 골키퍼 스티페 플레티코사 옆을 지나 골문 안쪽에 깊히 박히는 득점골이 되었다. 

전반전

크로아티아는 전반전 초반 로베르트 야르니가 쏜 프리킥을 멕시코 페널티 박스 안쪽에서 다보르 수케르가 뛰어들면서 받아내 최고의 기회를 만들었다. 98 프랑스 월드컵의 ‘골든 슈(황금 신발상)’을 수상한 주인공 수케르는 헤딩 슛을 시도했지만 멕시코 골키퍼 오스카르 페레스가 펀칭으로 잘 막아냈다.(전반 5분) 

초반 30분간 크로아티아의 긴 패스와 헤딩 슛으로 멕시코는 곤욕을 치렀다. 크로아티아의 다음 기회는 질주해가는 니코 코바치에게 미드필드에서 공을 띄워주면서 생겼다. 그러나 또다시 골키퍼 페레스가 크게 슬라이딩하면서 가장자리에서 골을 막아냈다.(전반 25분) 

위기를 넘긴 멕시코는 그 이후 공을 잘 요리하기 시작했다. 콰우테모크 블랑코가 코너에서 날아 온 공을 헤딩한 것이 거의 득점으로 연결될 뻔했다. 그러나 골키퍼 스티페 플레티코사에게 너무 가까이 가는 바람에 골키퍼가 여유 있게 잡아냈다.(전반 31분) 

전반전 멕시코 최고의 기회는 포워드 하레드 보르게티가 만들어 냈다. 산토스 라구나 소속인 보르게티는 마크를 받지 않고 페널티 박스까지 들어갔지만, 꺾어 슛한 공은 골키퍼가 방향을 잘못 잡았음에도 불구하고 득점으로 연결되지는 못했다.(전반 33분) 

후반전 

전반 초반과 마찬가지로 크로아티아는 후반전에 다시 왼쪽에서 프리킥을 얻어 냈고 이번엔 즈보니미르 솔도가 강력한 헤딩 슛을 날렸지만, 페레즈 골키퍼가 다시 펀칭으로 막아 냈다(후반 2분). 

그 후에도 교체 선수로 들어온 밀란 라파이치가 27미터 거리에서 위협적인 프리킥을 날리는 등 크로아티아의 공세는 계속되었다(후반 10분). 

잠시 소강 상태였던 경기는 크로아티아 페널티 박스에서 계속 기회를 노리고 있던 블랑코에게 보르게티가 패스를 하면서 다시 달아올랐다. 바이엘 레버쿠젠의 수비수인 보리스 지브코비치가 반칙을 한 것이다. 주심은 페널티 킥을 선언하였고 동시에 지브코비치에게는 퇴장을 선언하였다. 

스페인의 바야돌리드에서 활약하고 있는 블랑코는 페널티 킥의 기회를 놓치지 않았고, 침착한 슈팅으로 골문 왼쪽 상단으로 찔러 넣었다(1-0, 후반 15분). 

10명이 된 크로아티아는 실점 이후 동점골을 넣기 위해 분발하였다. 솔도가 장거리 바운드 슛을 날렸고, 페레즈 골키퍼가 실수로 공을 놓치면서 공은 골대를 살짝 벗어났다. 그 결과로 코너킥을 얻었지만 무위로 끝나고 말았다(후반 21분). 

이후부터는 멕시코가 뛰어난 전술 구사 능력을 보이며 경기를 주도하였고, 종종 역습으로 추가 골을 노리곤 했지만 1-0의 승리로 만족해야 했다. 

비교적 강팀이 없는 G조에 속한 멕시코는 크로아티아처럼 FIFA 월드컵™에 처음 참가하는 나라인 에콰도르와 다음 경기를 치르게 된다. 한편 오늘 경기에서 패배의 불운을 겪은 크로아티아는 이번 FIFA 월드컵의 강력한 우승 후보로 꼽히는 이탈리아와 경기를 치를 예정이다.

Defender Boris Zivkovic’s hard foul on Cuauhtemoc Blanco proved too costly for Croatia in their Group G opener against Mexico at the Niigata Stadium Big Swan in Japan. It resulted in the tournament’s first expulsion and a converted penalty kick that the Europeans could never overcome. 

As Blanco received a nice heel pass into space from Jared Borgetti, Zivkovic stepped in from behind and chopped the Mexican striker to the turf in the 60th minute. The veteran of France 98 was back up for the penalty, though, and buried his shot past goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa. With the group advantage, Mexico now prepare for debutantes Ecuador, while Croatia face a crucial match against Italy, one of the tournament’s favourites. 

Croatia had their best chance of the first half early on when Robert Jarni’s free kick from the left found an on-rushing Davor Suker in the Mexican box. France 98’s Golden Shoe winner got good pace on his header, but Mexican goalkeeper Oscar Perez was up to the task and poked it away (5’) 

In the first half-hour Croatia’s long-balls and heading ability were causing Mexico problems. Their next good chance came when they lofted a ball from midfield to the streaking Niko Kovac. However, Perez again came up large, sliding in to snag the ball on the edge of his area (25’) 

Following that, Mexico’s impressive possession game started to work better. They almost opened the scoring when Cuauhtemoc Blanco headed the ball down well from a corner. But, it was too close to Stipe Pletikosa, and the Croatian goalkeeper scooped it up without much trouble (31’). 

The best chance of the half was Mexican poacher Jared Borgetti’s. The Santos Laguna player managed to sneak into the box unmarked, but he could not direct a deflected shot into the Croatian net despite being alone with the goalkeeper headed in the wrong direction (33’). 

Just as they started off the first half, Croatia won a free-kick on the left wing. And, just as they did in the first period, they put a strong header on goal, this time from Zvonimir Soldo, only for Perez to punch the ball away. (47’) 

Croatian substitute Milan Rapaic then hit a rasping free kick from 30 yards out to keep a bit of pressure on the CONCACAF team. (55’) 

The slow pace of the match was shattered on the hour mark when Borgetti sprung Blanco into the Croatian box. The referee not only pointed to the penalty spot, but he also pulled a red card from his pocket for the Bayer Leverkusen defender, Boris Zivkovic. 

The Valladolid player stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to the upper left of the goal (0:1, 60’) 

After the goal, the 10-men Croatians tried to push forward in search of an equalizer. Soldo’s long shot bounced in front of Perez, who bobbled the ball past his own post. The resulting corner came to nothing (66’). 

From there out, the Mexicans largely controlled the ball, showing their trademark tactical skill, occasionally springing forward on the counter to look for more goals. In the end though, they were happy to settle for the single goal victory. 
 

에콰도르와의 경기에서 우승을 거둔 이탈리아는 같은 날 오후 크로아티아에 승리를 거둔 멕시코와 함께 G조의 선두로 나섰다. 반면 에콰도르는 오늘 경기로 인해 G조에서 하위로 미끄러지고 말았다. 에콰도르는 오는 일요일 멕시코를 상대로, 이탈리아는 오는 토요일 크로아티아를 상대로 각각 경기를 갖게 된다. 

전반전

이탈리아는 심판의 경기 시작 휘슬이 울리자 마자 에콰도르를 거세게 몰아 부쳤다. 시작한 지 6분만에 크리스티안 비에리는 상대 문전을 향해 단독 돌파를 감행, 에콰도르의 호세 세바요스 골키퍼와 일대일 상황에서 슛을 날렸지만 세바요스의 선방에 의해 저지되고 말았다 (7분). 

그러나 아주리 군단의 공격은 이내 결실을 맺었다. 우측을 줄기차게 파고든 프란체스코 토티가 측면에서 비에리에게 공을 매끄럽게 연결해 주었고, 인터 밀란 소속의 비에리가 이 공을 받아 16미터 전방에서 강한 왼발 슛으로 에콰도르 골 네트를 뒤흔들었다. 비에리의 골은 세바요스 골키퍼가 전혀 손쓸 수 없는 오른쪽 상단에 꽂혔다 (1-0, 7분). 

선제 득점에 성공한 이후, 이탈리아는 공세에 치중하기보다는 수비에 주안점을 두면서 에콰도르의 작은 실수를 이용한 역습을 도모하려는 신중한 자세를 보이기 시작했다. 

이탈리아의 지안루카 잠브로타는 에콰도르 3백 라인의 패스 실책를 틈타 비에리에게 크로스를 날려 역습을 도모하였지만, 비에리가 미끄러지면서 슛한 공은 골문을 벗어났다 (24분). 

그리고 얼마 되지 않아 이탈리아의 기습 공격이 빛을 발하며 비에리는 두 번째 골을 성공시켰다. 수비 진영에서 길게 넘어온 볼을 비에리가 받아 상대 수비수를 떨구고 세바요스 골키퍼를 향해 강한 땅볼 슛을 날렸다. 비에리가 슛한 공은 세바요스 골키퍼의 다리를 맞고 텅 빈 골문을 향해 굴러갔다. 비에리는 끝까지 쇄도하면서 재차 공을 강하게 차 넣으며 이탈리아에게 두 번째 골을 선사하였다 (2-0, 27분). 

이후 만회골을 얻으려는 에콰도르가 공세에 나서 볼 점유율면에서는 이탈리아를 압도했지만, 이탈리아의 견고한 수비진에 말려 이렇다 할 득점 기회를 얻을 수가 없었다. 

후반전 

에콰도르는 후반 들어 계속 경기를 주도하며 몇 차례 기회를 만들기도 했지만 지안루이지 부폰 이탈리아 골키퍼에게는 그다지 위협적이지 못했다. 

에콰도르는 또 한번의 실수로 세 번째 골을 허용할 뻔했다. 다미아노 톰마시가 미드필드에서 잘못 패스된 공을 가로채 중앙으로 몰고 간 다음 25미터 중거리 슛을 날렸고, 공은 세바요스 골키퍼의 손을 맞고 크로스 바를 넘어갔다(57분). 계속된 코너 킥에서 크리스티아노 도니가 골로 달려들며 발리 슛을 했지만 크로스 바를 맞고 넘어가고 말았다(58분). 

두 골을 앞선 이탈리아는 침착한 수비로 골문을 지키며 에콰도르 선수들을 꽁꽁 묶었다. 

대다수의 관중이 이탈리아를 응원하는 가운데 74분 유벤투스의 플레이메이커 알레산드로 델 피에로가 토티와 교체해 들어오자 뜨거운 박수로 환영하였다. 

에콰도르는 마지막까지 최선을 다했고 종료 직전 이탈리아 부폰 골키퍼의 간담을 서늘케 하는 슛을 날리기도 했다. 에콰도르의 포워드인 아구스틴 델가도가 페널티 지역 근처에서 패스를 받아 슛을 날렸지만 부폰이 몸을 날려 밖으로 쳐내면서 에콰도르의 마지막 기회는 무산되고 말았다(90분).

Italy earned a comfortable victory over Ecuador at Sapporo Dome in Japan in Group G's second match. Striker Christian Vieri got his finals campaign off to a hot start, scoring two first-half goals to lead the Italians. 

The win lifts Italy to top of the group along side Mexico, who defeated Croatia earlier in the day. Ecuador now own a share of the bottom spot and will next face Mexico on Sunday. Italy will play next against Croatia on Saturday. 

Italy came out with all cylinders firing and after only six minutes, Christian Vieri was sent through into the penalty area. Just as he put his foot to the ball, Ecuador goalkeeper Jose Cevallos charged out to block his shot (7’). 

But, the Azzurri came straight back with Francesco Totti bursting down the right wing and laying a ball back from the by-line to Vieri 16 metres from goal. This time, the Inter Milan striker had more than an instant to find the upper-right corner with a booming left-foot shot, leaving Cevallos helpless (1:0, 7’). 

After scoring, Italy seemed content to allow some breathing room to the FIFA World Cup debutantes and wait to pounce on any small mistake. 

Gianluca Zambrotta intercepted a poor pass in Ecuador’s defensive third then crossed for Vieri, but his ambitious sliding volley sailed well off the mark (24’). 

Moments later Vieri did have his second when the Italians counter-attacked. The striker chested down a long ball out of the back, shook off his defender and sent a low shot toward Cevallos. The goalkeeper managed to get a piece of the shot with his leg, but was unlucky to have the ball carom directly at the empty goal. Vieri had an easy tap-in (2:0, 27’). 

The half closed with Ecuador enjoying most of the possession, but never threatening the Italy goal.  

Ecuador continued to control the pace in the second half, and they were able to manufacture a few opportunities, but Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had little difficulty with any of them. 

Another mistake by the South Americans almost cost them a third goal. Damiano Tommasi intercepted a poor pass at midfield, raced straight up the middle and ripped a 25-metre shot that Cevallos tipped over the crossbar (57’). On the ensuing corner kick, Cristiano Doni leaped into the goal box and volleyed the ball off the crossbar and out of play (58’). 

Ahead by a pair, Italy were composed, filling their box with defenders and making it nearly impossible for Ecuador to even sniff a goal. 

The large Italian contingent in attendance reserved most of its second-half cheering for the entrance of prized Juventus playmaker Alessandro Del Piero, who replaced Totti in the 74th minute. 

Some excitement remained, however, as Buffon made his best stop of the night to preserve his clean sheet as stoppage time approached. Ecuador forward Agustin Delgado received a pass at his feet at the top of the penalty area, turned in one motion and watched Buffon dive to deflect his last-chance effort out for a corner (90’).
