멕시코는 역사상 처음으로 이탈리아에게 승리를 거두는가 했지만 다급해진 이탈리아 팀은 계속해서 반전을 가했고, 후반전 종료를 얼마 남기지 않고 교체로 들어온 델 피에로가 소중한 한 골을 터뜨리면서 이탈리아는 안도의 한숨을 쉴 수 있었다. 

전반전

필리포 인자기에게 첫번째 기회가 찾아왔다. 그가 마음먹고 때린 25미터 발리슛은 그러나 멕시코의 오스카 페레스 골키퍼에게 걸리고 말았다. (8분). 인자기가 페널티 박스 끝에서 다시 한번 기회를 잡는가 싶었으나 오프사이드가 선언되고 말았다. (13분) 

멕시코는 초반 15분동안 공 점유율에 앞서 있었지만 신중한 공격이 아무런 성과를 내지 못했다. 헤라르도 토라도의 25미터 중거리슛이 터졌지만 크로스바를 넘어가 버렸다. (17분) 

이탈리아에게 다시 한번 불운이 찾아왔다. 프란체스코 토티가 골문 12미터 앞에서 페레스 골키퍼와 일대일 상황이 되었으나 골을 성공시키지 못했다. 인자기가 수비수들 사이를 헤집고 페널티 박스까지 공을 몰고 들어와서 왼쪽에 서있던 토티에게 연결했지만 AS 로마의 스트라이커 토티가 감아찬 공은 골포스트 밖으로 벗어나 버리고 말았다. (19분) 

본선 1라운드에서 이탈리아가 기록한 세 골을 모두 넣은 크리스티안 비에리가 18미터 발리슛을 쏘아 올렸으나 페레스 골키퍼의 선방에 막히고 말았다. (22분) 

견고한 수비와 약간의 운마저 함께한 멕시코는 이탈리아의 날카로운 예봉을 잘도 피해갔다. 멕시코의 콰우테모크 블랑코가 골문 근처에 서있던 하레드 보르헤티의 머리를 겨냥해 멋지게 띄워준 공을 보르헤티가 날렵하게 뛰어오르며 헤딩슛, 그저 멍하니 서있을 수 밖에 없었던 지안루이 부폰 골키퍼의 골문을 갈랐다. (1-0, 35분) 

이탈리아의 지안루카 잠브로타에게 좋은 기회가 왔다. 달려들어가며 비에리의 드롭 패스를 받은 잠브로타가 16미터 밖에서 슛을 날려보았지만 옆으로 벗어나고 말았다. (40분). 몇차례의 기회를 무산시킨 아주리군단은 리드를 허용한 채 전반전을 끝냈다. 

후반전 

후반전에 들어서도 이탈리아의 공세는 계속되었다. 인자기는 문전을 돌파하며 상대 골키퍼와 단독으로 맞서는 절호의 득점 기회를 잡았다. 그러나 문전으로 쇄도하는 인자기를 맞아 페레스 골키퍼가 적극적으로 앞으로 나서 공을 처내면서 실점 위기에서 팀을 구하였다 (51분). 

반격에 나선 멕시코는 헤수스 아레아노와 블랑코의 환상적인 2대1 협력에 이은 아레아노의 돌파와 슛으로 이탈리아 골문을 크게 위협하였다. 아레아노의 강슛을 부폰 골키퍼는 몸으로 막았고, 문전 앞으로 흘러 나온 공을 수비수가 간신히 걷어내었다 (54분). 

공격이 지지 부진한 모습을 보이고 계속 멕시코에게 끌려나가자 이탈리아는 크게 당황하는 모습을 보여주었다. 잠브로타와 몬텔라가 2분 사이에 연속으로 심판으로부터 경고 카드를 받은 것은 이탈리아 선수들의 혼란스러운 분위기를 잘 나타내주는 것이었다. 

멕시코는 계속해서 좋은 공격력을 선보였다. 라몬 모랄레스가 상대 좌측 문전에서 때린 강한 슛은 골문 위를 넘어갔고 (57분), 로드리게스의 슛은 골 포스트를 살짝 비껴나가며 이탈리아 선수들을 긴장시켰다 (61분). 

전반전에도 그러했듯이, 이탈리아는 몬텔라가 로빙 슛으로 페레스 골키퍼의 키를 넘기는 골을 성공시킨 듯 보였지만 부심은 다시 깃발을 들어올리며 오프사이드임을 선언하였다 (64분). 

페레스 골키퍼와 멕시코는 비에리의 강력한 슛에 큰 위기를 맞이하였다. 인테르 밀란의 간판 포워드인 비에리가 전방 25미터에서 볼을 잡자마자 강력한 중거리 슛을 날렸지만, 페레스는 몸을 날리면서 공을 바깥으로 쳐내 코너킥으로 만들었다 (72분). 

멕시코의 라파엘 가르시아가 잠브로타에게 페널티 에어리어 바로 바깥에서 파울을 가해 이탈리아에게 다시 좋은 프리킥 기회를 얻었다. 그러나 몬텔라의 프리킥은 멕시코의 수비벽을 뚫지 못했다 (83분). 

이탈리아가 상대 진영 우측에서 드로우인한 공이 마침내 동점골로 연결되었다. 드로우인을 받은 몬테라가 자신의 어깨너머로 날카로운 크로스로 날렸고, 이를 알렉산드로 델피에로가 헤딩 슛으로 연결하였다. 공은 그간 선방을 거듭하던 페레스 골키퍼를 지나 멕시코의 골 네트를 흔들었다 (1-1, 85분).

Mexico and Italy both confirmed their presence in the second round with a hard-fought draw in Oita, Japan, as a goal five minutes from time by Alessandro Del Piero dramatically equalised Jared Borgetti’s tremendous first half header.  

Mexico were minutes away from recording their first ever victory over the Italians, but the desperate Europeans poured on the pressure until the goal came their way thanks to Del Piero, who had come on the field only minutes before.  

Filippo Inzaghi had the first chance of the game, but his ambitious volley from 25 metres was taken in by Mexico goalkeeper Oscar Perez (8’). Inzaghi beat Perez on a second chance from the top of the penalty area, but was ruled offside (13’).  

Match facts 
Mexico enjoyed an edge in possession over the first quarter hour, but their patient attack did not produce any shots until Gerardo Torrado’s 25-metre chance sailed well over the crossbar (17’).  

Italy were unlucky again when Francesco Totti missed wide from 12 metres with only Perez in the way. Inzaghi dribbled through a crowd at the edge of the penalty area and fed Totti at the left side of the box. The AS Roma striker had time to settle the ball but curled his shot outside the far post (19’).  

Christian Vieri, who had scored each of Italy’s three finals goals entering the match, followed with a volley from 18 metres that was saved by Perez (22’).  

Some strong defence and a little luck were with Mexico and when their possession game had seemed to lull Italy to sleep, Cuauhtemoc Blanco laid a beautiful chip to the near post onto the head of Jared Borgetti, who spun in the air and flicked a header past Gianluigi Buffon, who never moved (1:0, 35’).  

Gianluca Zambrotta had another great chance for Italy as he ran onto a drop-pass from Vieri 16 metres out but fired well wide (40’). And when the half ended, the Azzurri only had a deficit and several near misses to their credit.  

Italy continued to come at Mexico as the second half began, and it was Inzaghi who nearly pulled his side level when he was sent in alone on goal. Perez was able to disrupt the run when he sprawled to get a hand on the ball as Inzaghi tried to dribble past him (51’). 

A clinical one-two by Jesus Arellano and Blanco nearly concluded with Arellano netting the second for the Tricolores, but Buffon got a hand on the shot and his defence cleared the rebound (54’). 

Italy’s growing frustration at not finding the net became evident when Zambrotta and Vincenzo Montella were each cautioned in the space of two minutes. 

Mexico followed with a shot from the left of the area by Ramon Morales that sailed high (57’) and a chance from Joahan Rodriguez that drifted just wide (61’). 

As they had in the first half, Italy found the back of the net again when Montella lobbed over a charging Perez, but for a second time, the assistant referee’s flag had been raised, signalling offside (64’). 

Perez and his outstretched frame were vital again for Mexico when Vieri was sent in from 25 metres. The Inter Milan forward tried to settle the ball and direct a shot toward goal, but Perez slid in and parried the ball out for a corner kick (72’). 

When Rafael Garcia fouled Zambrotta just outside the area, Italy were presented with another opportunity, but Montella’s free kick did not clear the wall (83’). 

A throw-in on the right side turned into the equaliser for Italy when Montella played a sharp cross over his shoulder into the area and late substitute Alessandro Del Piero raced in unmarked to head past Perez (1:1, 85’).  
 

크로아티아는 동점을 하려고 안간힘을 썼지만 에콰도르는 좀처럼 내주지를 않았다. 

전반전 

에콰도르는 일찍부터 미드필드를 장악하기 시작했다. 에콰도르는 전방의 포워드인 아구스틴 델가도와 까를로스 테노리오에게 센터링을 집중시키는데 총력을 다했다. 반면 크로아티아는 이탈리아를 상대로 2점이나 성공시킨 팀답지 않았다. 크로아티아는 미드필드 진영이 큰 힘을 발휘하지 못해 가끔씩의 역습에 만족해야 했다. 

비록 에콰도르의 센터링이 목표였던 페널티 지역 안으로 전달은 됐지만 득점으로까지 연결되지는 못했고, 점차 중거리 슛으로 공격을 전환하기 시작했다. 또, 에콰도르가 경기를 장악해 나가는 것처럼 보였지만 크로아티아의 알렌 복시치가 오히려 페널티 지역 안에서 터닝슛을 쏘아 왼쪽 골포스트를 맞추면서 득점에 근접했다(35분). 

몇분 후, 복시치는 또 한 번 위협적인 슈팅으로 득점을 시도하였는데 에콰도르의 이반 우르타도가 마지막 순간에 겨우 걷어냈다. 전반 종료 직전, 복시치가 다시 한 번 득점에 성공할 뻔 했다. 이번에는 칩슛으로 에콰도르 골키퍼 호세 세바요스를 넘겼으나 다른 수비수가 걷어냈다(46분). 

후반전 

전반 위험스런 상황을 만들어내지 못했던 에콰도르가 후반 들어 선취골을 뽑아내는 데 성공했다. 델가도가 에디손 멘데스에게 공을 넘겨 주자 멘데스는 8미터 지점에서 기막힌 하프 발리슛을 날렸으며 공은 크로아티아 골키퍼 스티페 플레티코사를 지나 골망에 꽂히고 말았다(1-0, 48분). 

이렇게 선취골이 터졌음에도 불구하고 경기의 템포는 별다른 변화가 없었으며 경기가 막바지에 치닫을 때까지 양팀은 결정적인 득점 기회를 잡지 못하고 수비에만 급급했다. 그러나 경기 종료 10분을 남겨 놓고 다급해진 크로아티아는 공세를 퍼부었고 에콰도르 수비는 빈틈을 보이기 시작했다. 

크로아티아는 복시치가 왼쪽에서 넘겨준 센터링을 다보르 부그리네치가 받아 발리슛을 시도하며 절호의 득점 찬스를 맞았으나 공은 골문을 넘어가 버리고 말았다(83분). 뒤이어 마리오 스타니치가 코너 킥을 연결하여 역시 헤딩슛을 날렸으나 에콰도르 수비수가 그만 걷어내고 말았다(87분). 

결국 크로아티아는 한 골도 올리지 못하고 2라운드 진출의 꿈을 접을 수 밖에 없었다. 한편 FIFA 월드컵 본선에 처음 진출한 에콰도르는 본선 무대에서 첫 승을 올렸으나 역시 탈락의 고배를 마시고 말았다.

With Italy's draw to Mexico, Croatia needed to beat Ecuador to advance to the second round. However, the South Americans got a goal from Edison Mendez early in the second half to claim their first FIFA World Cup™ victory in their debut tournament. 

There was little to separate the teams, but when Croatia was searching for an equalizer, Ecuador defended resolutely to preserve their lead. 

Match facts 

Ecuador took control of midfield early. They focused their attacking efforts on serving crosses into the area for forwards Agustin Delgado and Carlos Tenorio. Croatia, meanwhile, did not resemble the team that scored two goals against Italy. The Croats were not able to build much from midfield and had to settle for counter-attacks. 

Although Ecuador were getting their crosses into the area, none of them reached their targets, and they began to settle for some hopeful shots from long range. And although Ecuador seemed to be carrying the play, it was Croatia’s Alen Boksic who went close first, when he swivelled and shot off the left post from just inside the area (35’). 

Minutes later, Boksic seemed likely to get another dangerous shot off when he got loose on goal, but Ivan Hurtado came in with a saving tackle at the last instant. With the half about to expire, it was Boksic again who was the danger man. This time he chipped the ball over Ecuador goalkeeper Jose Cevallos only to see it cleared away by a defender (46’+). 

After Ecuador created virtually no dangerous situations at all in the first half, they scored a goal in the opening moments of the second half. Delgado played a ball back to Edison Mendez, who fired a wonderful half-volley from eight metres past Croatia goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa (1:0, 48’). 

The goal did little to change the tempo of the game. Chances continued to be hard to come by for either side as the clocked ticked past the hour mark. But in the final 10 minutes, Croatia began to attack with more urgency, and weaknesses in the Ecuador defence started to show. 

Croatia missed a great look at goal when Boksic served a cross from the left to Davor Vugrinec, whose volley went well high and wide (83’). Then Mario Stanic headed a corner kick on goal but had it cleared off the line by a defender (87’). 

But no goal would come for Croatia, and time ran out on their hopes of reaching the second round. Ecuador had their first-ever win in a FIFA World Cup finals, and both teams had played their last match in Korea/Japan.
