일본 이바라키에서 열린 오늘 경기에서 종료 20여분 전까지만 해도 크로아티아는 이탈리아에게 0-1로 뒤지고 있었고, 2002 FIFA 월드컵 한국/일본™ 1라운드에서 탈락될 위기에 놓여있었다. 그러나 4년전 프랑스 FIFA 월드컵에서 3위의 성적을 거둔 크로아티아는 철통같은 이탈리아의 수비벽을 뚫고 단 3분 만에 두 골을 득점시켰고, 이제까지의 부진했던 1라운드 성적을 뒤로 하고 다시 16강 진출의 희망을 재차 얻게 되었다. 

이탈리아의 크리스티안 비에리가 이번 본선에서 3번째 골을 성공시킨 후 뒤쳐저 있던 크로아티아는 교체로 들어온 올리치 선수가 멋진 헤딩으로 한 골을 올리고 밀란 라파이치가 다시 추가골을 넣으면서 놀라운 우승의 가도를 달리게 되었다. 오늘 경기에서 패배한 이탈리아는 FIFA 월드컵 경기에서 12번 연속 무패의 기록을 계속 갱신해 갈 수 없게 되었을 뿐 아니라, G조의 상위에 속하는 크로아티아 및 멕시코와 함께 모두 3포인트로 대등한 입장에 놓이게 되었다. 이탈리아는 곧 멕시코와, 그리고 크로아티아는 에콰도르와 경기를 가지게 된다. 

전반전 

ITA : CRO 08/6 Ibaraki, Japan

에콰도르와의 첫 경기에서 기분 좋은 승리를 거두며 상쾌한 출발을 보였던 이탈리아는 경기가 시작되자마자 프란체스코 토티가 스테판 토마스로부터 페널티 에어리어 바로 바깥에서 파울을 얻어내 프리킥 기회를 잡으며, 크로아티아와의 경기 또한 순조롭게 풀어 나가는 듯이 보였다. 그러나 토티의 프리킥은 크로아티아의 견고한 수비벽에 막히고 말았다 (3분). 

토티의 프리킥에 이어 이탈리아의 크리스티아노 도니는 크로아티아의 수비수 로베르트 코바치를 제치고 골키퍼와 단독으로 맞서는 절호의 기회를 맞이하였다. 도니는 코바치를 몸싸움으로 밀치고 문전으로 파고 들어 강슛을 날렸지만 크로아티아의 스티페 플레티코사 골키퍼의 몸을 날리는 선방에 가로 막히고 말았다 (15분). 

크로아티아는 다보르 부그리네치의 중거리 슛을 시작으로 반격을 개시, 이후 지안루이지 부폰 골키퍼의 손길을 바쁘게 만들었다. 부그리네치는 25미터 거리에서 중거리 슛을 날렸지만 위치 선정이 탁월한 부폰 골키퍼는 이를 안정적으로 막아내었다. 

이후 부그리네치는 더욱 좋은 득점 기회를 만들어 냈다. 밀란 라파이치와 함께 2대1 협력 플레이를 구사하며 문전을 파고든 부그리네치는 오른쪽 측면에서 골문을 향해 슛을 날렸지만 부폰 골키퍼와 마테라치에 의해 득점이 저지되고 말았다. 그가 슛한 공은 부폰 골키퍼의 몸을 맞고 골문 앞으로 흘렀고, 이를 경기 중에 부상을 당한 알레산드로 네스타를 대신하여 교체로 투입된 마르코 마테라치가 능숙한 커버 플레이로 걷어 내었다. 

크로아티아는 다시 날카로운 역습을 감행하며 부폰 골키퍼를 바쁘게 만들었다. 라파이치의 12미터 중거리 슛은 유벤투스의 주전 수문장 부폰의 선방으로 인해 골로 연결되지 않았다 (45분). 

전반전 내내 양팀은 거친 태클을 구사하는 격렬한 경기를 펼치면서 득점 기회를 주고 받았다. 골은 금방이라도 터질 듯 한 분위기였지만 결국 무득점으로 전반전을 끝마쳤다. 

후반전 

후반 초반 인터 밀란의 포워드 크리스티안 비에리가 골문앞에서 헤딩한 공이 네트를 가르자 이번 대회 그의 세번째 골이 터진 줄 알았으나 결국 오프사이드로 판명이 났다. (50분) 

몇 분 후 비에리는 도니가 센터링한 공을 크로아티아의 수비수 조십 시뮤니치보다 높이 뛰어올라 플레티코사 골커퍼를 넘기는 헤딩 슛으로 연결, 끝내 그의 세번째 골을 집어넣었다. (1-0, 55분) 

한 골을 내준 크로아티아는 미드필더 유리카 브라네스와 포워드 이비카 올리치를 투입, 반격의 불을 당겼다. 로버트 야르니의 날카로운 센터링이 이탈리아 문전으로 향하자 올리치가 달려들면서 오른발로 가볍게 찬 공이 부폰 골키퍼를 지나 그물에 꽂히면서 승부는 원점으로 돌아갔다. (1-1, 73분) 

크로아티아는 계속해서 공격의 고삐를 늦추지 않았고 불과 3분만에 역전골을 성공시키며 앞서 나가기 시작했다. 라파이치가 센터링을 받아 찬 공이 빗나갔으나 니코 코바치의 헤딩으로 페널티 박스 안쪽에 서있던 그에게 다시 공이 연결됐다. 라파이치가 가슴으로 공을 떨어뜨리고 넘어지면서 왼 발로 슈팅한 공이 이탈리아 수비수의 다리를 맞고 부폰 골키퍼가 손 쓸 틈도 없이 그의 키를 넘겨 골문안으로 빨려들어갔다. (1-2, 76분) 

토티의 기가막힌 프리킥이 이탈리아를 회생시키는 듯 했으나 25미터 앞에서 슈팅한 공이 골포스트를 맞히고 꼼짝 못하고 서있던 플레티코사 골키퍼의 뒤를 돌아 반대편 골 포스트 쪽으로 튕겨 나가면서 크로아티아가 간신히 위기를 넘겼다. (87분) 

종료 시간을 얼마 남겨두지 않고 플레티코사 골키퍼가 다시 한번 오른쪽으로 높이 몸을 날려 지안루카 잠브로타의 슛을 막아내면서 동점골을 허용하지 않았다. (89분) 

후반 초반과 비슷한 상황이 벌어졌다. 필리포 인자기가 페널티 박스로 들어온 긴 패스를 받아 수비를 뚫고 들어가는 사이 문전 앞에서 혼전이 벌어졌고 플레티코사 골키퍼의 시야를 벗어난 공이 빈 골문 안으로 굴러들어갔다. 그러나 또한번의 이탈리아의 승리환호는 부심이 흔드는 깃발에 의해 멈춰지고 말았다. (92분)

With under twenty minutes left, Croatia were down 1-0 in Ibaraki, Japan and facing elimination from the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™. But, against the vaunted Italian defence, the third place finishers four years ago rallied for two goals in three minutes and held on against late pressure to rescue their hopes of advancing to the next round.  

Substitute Ivica Olic equalized Christian Vieri’s third goal of the tournament - a splendid second-half header - before Milan Rapaic gave the Eastern Europeans a stunning victory. The loss not only breaks a 12 match unbeaten run in the FIFA World Cup for Italy but leaves them now even with three points on top of Group G with both Croatia and Mexico. The Italians face Mexico next, while Croatia take on Ecuador.  

Italy jumped out to an early lead in their first match against Ecuador and looked to do so again when Stjepan Tomas fouled Francesco Totti just outside the penalty area. But Totti’s free kick was blocked by the Croatian wall (3’). 

Cristiano Doni created an excellent chance out of nothing with Croatia’s Robert Kovac all over his backside. Doni out-muscled Kovac to gain possession inside the penalty area and only a fantastic diving save by goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa kept Italy scoreless (15’). 

Croatia put their first test on Gianluigi Buffon when Davor Vugrinec launched a 25-metre half-volley, but the Italian keeper was properly positioned and made the easy save (22’). 

Vugrinec had an even better opportunity after working a quick one-two with Milan Rapaic at the top of the area. Stepping in on the right side, Vugrinec sent a bouncing shot on Buffon that the keeper batted off Marco Materazzi, but the defender, who had just replaced Alessandro Nesta, was able to recover before the ball rolled over the line (26’). 

Croatia forced another save from Buffon, this time on the counter-attack. Rapaic’s low 12-metre effort from the left side was snared by the Juventus keeper (45’). 

Hard tackles from both teams were plentiful in the opening half and there were more than a few scoring chances. It seemed a goal was to come, but the question was whether one would be enough. 

Christian Vieri thought he had netted his third goal of the tournament early in the second half, but after his close-range diving header found the net, the Inter Milan forward was judged to have been offside (50’).  

Minutes later he did have a third as he out-leapt Josip Simunic at the back post to reach Doni’s cross and loft a header over Pletikosa (1:0, 55’).  

Following the goal, Croatia brought on midfielder Jurica Vranjes and forward Ivica Olic to spark the attack. And it would be Olic who would eventually get them level. Robert Jarni served a dangerous cross in front of the Italian goal that Olic gently knocked past Buffon with his right foot (1:1, 73’). 

Croatia continued in the attack and just three minutes later they were ahead. Rapaic had a cross knocked away, but the ball was returned to him just inside the penalty area from the head of Niko Kovac. Rapaic brought the ball down with his chest and while falling lifted a partially deflected left-foot shot over a helpless Buffon (1:2, 76’). 

A well-struck free kick by Totti almost brought Italy back, but his 25-metre drive caromed off the near post, behind a stationary Pletikosa and through the other side of the goal box out of danger (87’). 

With stoppage time approaching, Pletikosa was called upon again when he dived high to his right to spoil Gianluca Zambrotta’s attempt to equalise (89’).  

Just as they had early in the half, Italy thought they had another goal denied by the assistant referee’s flag. Filippo Inzaghi chased down a long pass inside the area, causing enough confusion for Pletikosa to have it skip by him into the empty net. But once again the Italian celebrations were ceased by the assistant referee's waving flag (92’). 

일본 미야기에서 열린 이번 경기에서는 에콰도르의 아구스틴 델가도가 전반전 초에 헤딩으로 선제골을 성공시켰지만, 곧 멕시코는 대단한 기세로 역습을 가하여 결국 에콰도르를 누르고 2-1의 승리를 거두었다. 하레드 보르게티와 헤라르도 토라도가 얻은 두 골은 멕시코에게 에콰도르전 승리와 함께 G조에서 16강에 진출할 수 있는 가능성을 더더욱 확고히 했다. 

멕시코의 두 골은 모두 상당한 고난이도의 멋진 득점이었고, 이 두 골을 득점시킨 보르게티와 토라도(오늘의 버드와이저 선수)는 경기 내내 분투하며 크나 큰 활약을 했다. 오늘 멕시코가 보여준 기량은 다음 경기에서 멕시코와 싸우게 될 이탈리아 팀을 분명 불안에 떨게 할 것이다. 한편 이번이 FIFA 월드컵™ 처음 출전인 에콰도르는 이제까지 있었던 경기 두 번에서 모두 패배하여 16강 진출의 꿈이 사실상 좌절되었다고 할 수 있지만, 곧 있을 크로아티아와의 경기에서 우승하고 이탈리아가 다음 경기에서 패배할 경우 16강에 진출할 수도 있다. 

전반전

에콰도르는 아구스틴 델가도의 정확한 헤딩슛이 멕시코 골키퍼 오스카르 페레스의 손에 닿지 않고 크로스바 아래 부분에 맞고 들어가면서 일찌감치 앞서 나가기 시작했다. 울리세스 데라크루스가 오른쪽 진영에서 올린 센터링이 멋지게 골로 이어진 것이었다(0-1, 5분). 

멕시코는 에콰도르의 에드빈 테노리오가 후안 로드리게스에게 페널티 지역 바로 앞에서 한 반칙으로 첫 번째 세트 플레이를 선보일 기회를 맞았다. 하지만, 골키퍼 호세 세바요스는 멕시코의 라몬 모랄레스가 왼발로 감아 찬 프리킥을 간단히 처리했다(18분). 

전반전이 반쯤 흐를 때까지 멕시코는 볼 점유율에서는 압도적인 경기를 펼치면서도 위협적인 공격을 선보이지 못해 에콰도르는 경기를 비교적 쉽게 풀어나갔다. 

그러다가 마크를 따돌린 모랄레스가 왼쪽 진영에서 센터링을 올렸고 이를 받은 산토스 소속 포워드 하레드 보르게티는 왼발 발리슛으로 쉽게 에콰도르 골문을 열었다(1-1, 28분). 

경기가 원점으로 돌아가자 에콰도르는 다시금 공격에 나서기 시작했다. 알폰소 오브레곤이 25미터 거리에서 강력한 슛을 날려보았지만 왼쪽 골포스트를 크게 벗어났다(33분). 

대체로 멕시코가 경기의 흐름을 주도해 나갔고 전반 종료 전까지 세 번이나 득점 기회를 만들어냈다. 멕시코에게 제일 아쉬웠던 기회는 콰우테모크 블랑코가 페널티 지역 안에서 패스를 받았을 때였는데, 블랑코가 오른 발로 날린 슛은 힘이 부족해 에콰도르 골키퍼 세바요스가 쉽게 받아냈다(41분). 

후반전 

후반 5분 ,라울 게론은 몬터레이에서 공격수로 활약하고 있는 헤수스 아레야노가 오른쪽 측면에서 돌파를 시도하자, 잡아 끌어 경고를 받았으나, 그것은 영리한 행동이었다. 그가 한 파울로 브라울리오 루나가 프리킥을 찼으나 그 공은 허공을 가를뿐이었다. 

멕시코는 계속 후반 내내 압박했으며, 그러한 그들의 공격은 실효를 거두었다. 후반 12분, 토라도는 페널티 에어리어 바깥쪽에서 공간을 얻어냈으며, 그가 왼발로 찬 공은 골 네트의 오른쪽을 가르고야 말았다(2:1). 

교체되어 들어온 까를로스 테노리오는 폭발적인 속도로 2명의 멕시코 수비수를 제치고 코너킥을 얻어냄으로써 잠시 멕시코의 맹공격을 끊어놓았다. 후반 21분, 에콰도르는 마침내 프리킥을 얻어냈으며, 게론의 30미터 중거리 슛은 날카로웠으나 페레스 골키퍼 바로 앞으로 향하고 말았다. 

바로 멕시코의 공격이 시작되었는데, 후반 23분에는 로드리게스가 골문 10미터 앞에서의 좋은 찬스를 놓쳤고, 후반 25분에는 골 에어리어 안쪽에서 보르게티가 찬 슛이 바깥쪽 골 포스트를 스치듯이 지나갔다. 

후반 36분, 패스를 받은 테노리오의 스피드는 멕시코의 수비진을 뚫었으며,페레스와 맞서 빠른 슛을 날렸으나 골키퍼의 다리에 걸려 굴절되고 말았다. 

후반 38분, 에디손 멘데스는 또 한번 중거리 발리 슛을 시도했지만, 페레스 골키퍼의 선방에 걸리고 말았다. 후반 42분, 에콰도르의 마를론 아요비는 더 좋은 찬스를 맞이했지만, 그가 찬 20미터 중거리 오른발 슛은 오른쪽 골대 밖으로 약간 벗어나고 말았다.

After an early Agustin Delgado header gave Ecuador the lead, Mexico stormed back confidently to win 2-1 in Miyagi, Japan. Jared Borgetti and Gerardo Torrado claimed the goals that clinched the match, leaving Mexico in an excellent spot to advance from Group G.  

Both goals were top class, and the two goal scorers were impressive figures throughout the match. The authority with which Mexico controlled the South Americans will have their next opponents, Italy, nervous about their chances. For Ecuador it looks the end of the road on their debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup™. Only a victory over Croatia along with a Mexican win against Italy could keep them in the tournament.  

Ecuador went ahead early when Agustin Delgado’s pinpoint flick header was just out of the reach of goalkeeper Oscar Perez and banged down inside the goal off the underside of the crossbar. Ulises De La Cruz set up the first chance of the game with his cross from the right side (0:1, 5’). 

Ecuador’s Edwin Tenorio fouled Joahan Rodriguez outside the corner of the penalty area, setting up Mexico’s first dangerous set piece. But, goalkeeper Jose Cevallos easily handled Ramon Morales’ swerving left-footer (18’). 

Midway through the first half, Mexico enjoyed an overwhelming advantage in possession time, but the Tricolores never seemed dangerous and Ecuador soaked up the pressure with relative ease. 

But when Morales broke free on the left side and crossed for Jared Borgetti, the Santos forward made his left-foot volley look easy as it escaped a diving Cevallos and found the back of the net (1:1, 28’). 

Back to level terms, Ecuador returned to the attack. Alfonso Obregon struck a powerful shot from 25 metres that veered wide of the left post (33’). 

For the most part, Mexico continued to dictate the flow of the match, creating three more good chances before the half-time whistle. Cuauhtemoc Blanco had the best opportunity, receiving a pass just inside the penalty area, but he could only manage a soft right-footer on Cevallos (41’).  

Raul Guerron earned a caution when he was forced to drag down Jesus Arellano after the Monterrey forward beat him cleanly on the right side. The foul proved wise when Braulio Luna’s free kick was high and wide of the back post (50’). 

Mexico continued to press forward in the second half and they were eventually rewarded. Torrado was given space outside the penalty area and he ripped a left-footer into the right-side netting (2:1, 57’). 

Substitute forward Carlos Tenorio provided a brief respite from the Mexican onslaught when his sudden burst of speed past two Mexican defenders created a corner kick. Ecuador eventually earned a free kick, and Guerron’s 30-metre shot had pace but was directed right at Perez (66’). 

Before long, Mexico were back on the attack with Rodriguez wasting a good chance high over the net from 10 metres (68’), and Borgetti skimming the far post with a shot from just inside the area (70’). 

Tenorio’s speed caused more problems for Mexico when he raced around a defender to receive a pass and fire a quick shot that Perez was just able to deflect with his foot (81’). 

Edison Mendez then tested Perez from long-range with a hard-struck volley that the goalkeeper had little trouble containing (83’). Marlon Ayovi came even closer for Ecuador when his right-footer from 20 metres skipped inches outside the right post (87’).
