일본은 경기 내내 주도권을 잡았지만 후반전 시작전까지는 아직까지 우위를 점칠 수가 없었다. 모리시마 히로아키는 교체선수로 나오자 마자 얼마 안되어 골을 넣었고, 나카타 히데토시의 헤딩슛으로 승리를 굳혔다. 튀니지는 승점 1점으로 16강에 탈락되었다.

승점 3점이 필요한 벨기에는 초반부터 적극적으로 나왔다. 20미터 지점에서 얻은 프리킥을 요한 발렘이 멋지게 감아 찼고 공은 러시아 수비 벽을 넘어 오른쪽 위 구석으로 들어갔다(1-0, 7분). 

음보 음펜자가 18미터 거리에서 돌면서 발리 킥한 슛이 벨기에의 두 번째 득점이 될 뻔했지만 루슬란 니그마툴린 러시아 골키퍼가 몸을 날리며 막아냈다(9분). 

패하면 바로 짐을 싸야 한다는 사실을 잘 알고 있는 러시아에게는 동점골이 절실했다. 알렉세이 스메르틴의 첫 번째 슛은 높이 뜨고 말았다(19분). 그리고 안드레이 솔로마틴의 슛은 수비 몸을 맞고 코너킥이 되었다(20분).

후반전 

느슨한 수비를 펼치던 튀니지는 결국 후반이 시작되자마자 일본에게 선취골을 허용하고 말았다. 수비수의 어이없는 태클로 페널티 에어리어에 있던 모리시마 히로아키에게 공이 흘러들어 왔고 그는 이 기회를 놓치지 않고 15미터 지점에서 강슛을 날려 알리 붐니젤 골키퍼를 지나 왼쪽 네트에 꽂히는 첫 골을 뽑아냈다(0-1, 48분). 

선취골을 뽑고 사기가 오른 모리시마는 다시 한번 추가골의 기회를 노렸으나 실패로 돌아가고 말았다. 이치가와 다이스케가 오른쪽 측면에서 띄어준 센터링을 모리시마가 헤딩슛으로 연결하였으나 공은 왼쪽 골대를 맞고 튕겨 나왔다(53분). 뒤이어 이치가와는 다시 공간을 발견하고 페널티 에어리어 가장자리에서 직접 슈팅을 시도하였으나 역시 공은 왼쪽 골대를 크게 벗어나고 말았다(61분). 

그 이후에도 일본은 거침없이 공세를 퍼부었으며 오노 신지가 시도한 낮은 헤딩슛은 붐니젤 골키퍼가 잘 잡아냈다(65분). 하지만 잠시 후 나카타 히데토시에게서 승부에 쐐기를 박는 추가골이 터져 나왔다. 그는 이치가와의 센터링을 받아 강렬하고 낮은 헤딩슛을 날렸고 공은 붐니젤 골키퍼의 발에 맞고 그만 골문 안으로 들어가 버리고 말았다(0-2, 75분). 

튀니지도 알리 지투니가 두 번의 득점 찬스를 맞이하며 반격에 나섰으나 모두 실패로 돌아가고 말았다. 첫 번째 지투니의 오버헤드 킥은 왼쪽 골대를 크게 벗어났으며(79분) 뒤이어 페널티 에어리어 가장자리에서 시도한 슈팅도 크로스바를 맞고 튕겨 나가고 말았다(82분). 결국 튀니지의 포문은 열리지 않았고 일본은 조 선두로 사상 처음 16강 진출의 꿈을 달성하였다.

Co-hosts Japan won their second successive match, deservedly beating a determined Tunisian side and confirming their advancement to the second round. They win Group H and will face Turkey next, while Belgium end up second and will take on Brazil. 

Japan had the majority of chances in the match but had to wait until just after half-time to confirm their superiority. Hiroaki Morishima scored minutes after coming on as a substitute, while Hidetoshi Nakata assured victory with a header a quarter of an hour from time. Tunisia are eliminated with just one point. 

Match facts 

Neither team managed the game particularly well in the early minutes. Japan moved the ball forward but could not find a last through ball or an accurate cross to the strikers. Tunisia were content to sit back and wait for counter-attacks, though they lacked the precision they displayed in their 1-1 draw with Belgium. 

After the first quarter hour, Japan started to play more like a team needing only a draw, as they also began to sit back and wait for the counter-attack. With both sides packing men behind the ball, each team resorted to hopeful, ineffective long balls. 

Atsushi Yanagisawa was responsible for one of the few dangerous moments. He fired a shot from the penalty arc toward the lower-right corner, but Tunisia goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel made a nice diving save (34’). Ziad Jaziri had a look at goal from a similar spot for Tunisia, but his shot flew wide of the right post (38’). 

That would be all either team could muster in the first half, and they went into half-time having shown little imagination in the attack. 

Some sloppy defending by Tunisia finally set up a goal for Japan shortly after the interval. A defender’s ill-advised tackle pushed the ball to Hiroaki Morishima inside the area, and he fired a shot from 15 metres past Boumnijel and into the left-side netting (0:1, 48’). 

The goal opened things up, and Morishima almost had another goal minutes later, when Daisuke Ichikawa served a cross from the right wing and Morishima’s header hit off the left post (53’). Then Ichikawa found space to take a shot of his own from the edge of the area, but he sent it well wide of the left post (61’). 

Then it was Shinji Ono who went close. He struck a downward header that Boumnijel did well to slap away for a corner (65’). Ten minutes later, Hidetoshi Nakata scored his first goal of the finals after receiving a cross from Ichikawa and striking a powerful downward header between Boumnijel’s legs and into the net (0:2, 75’). 

Tunisia still had fight left in them, and Ali Zitouni nearly scored twice, first when his overhead kick went just wide of the left post (79’) and then when he hit the bar from the edge of the area (82’). But the goal would not come, and Japan had done enough to secure their victory and wrap up the top spot in the group.

천천히 팀을 가다듬은 러시아는 드미트리 알레니체프가 왼쪽 진영에서 오버랩하는 에고르 티토프에게 패스를 연결시키면서 황금 같은 기회를 만들어냈다. 티토프는 오른발로 골문을 향해 패스를 했으나 발레리 카르핀의 발끝에 걸리지를 않아 득점으로 연결되지 못했다(74분). 

동점으로 러시아가 16강에 진출하는 듯 하였으나, 벨기에는 70분에 음펜자와 교체되어 들어온 웨슬리 송크를 앞세우면서 러시아를 몰아붙였다. 송크는 발렘이 올린 코너킥을, 러시아 골키퍼 니그마툴린이 막아서고 있던 골문 8미터 거리에서 헤딩으로 골로 연결시켰다(2-1, 78분). 

그리고 빌모츠가 18미터 거리에서 득점에 성공하면서 벨기에는 2라운드 진출을 확정지었다. 바트 고어의 패스를 페널티 지역 끝에서 이어받은 빌모츠는 강한 왼발 슛을 날렸는데 이것이 러시아 수비수를 맞고 굴절되는 바람에 골키퍼 니그마툴린가 방향을 놓쳤고 공은 오른편 네트로 들어가 버렸다(3-1, 82분). 

시초프가 페널티 킥을 쏘는 곳 부근에서 앞으로 나오는 드 플리거를 돌려세우며 득점에 성공하면서 러시아는 1점차로 따라 붙었다(3-2, 89분). 하지만, 경기가 종반에 가까워지면서 벨기에는 러시아의 마지막 공격을 막아내는데 주력하였고 결국 16강에 한 자리를 차지할 수 있었다.

Belgium got late goals from Wesley Sonck and Marc Wilmots to beat Russia and qualify for the second round from Group H. Japan, who beat Tunisia, win the group and will play Turkey, while Belgium will face Brazil. 

The Belgians initially took the lead in the early going through a perfect Johan Walem free-kick. But, when Vladimir Beschastnykh scored in the second half, the draw meant Russia were through on points. Sonck’s header gave Belgium the lead and Wilmots scored his third goal of the tournament to confirm the victory even though Dmitri Sychev got a last-minute goal to send Belgian pulses racing. 

Match facts  

Needing three points, Belgium were off to the best possible start. Johan Walem scored a beautiful free kick from 20 metres when he curled his shot around the Russian wall and into the top-right corner (1:0, 7’). 

Mbo Mpenza looked to put Belgium ahead by two goals when his turning volley from 18 metres was directed toward the far post, but Russia goalkeeper Ruslan Nigmatullin dived right to make the save (9’). 

Knowing a loss would send them packing, the Russians had to find an equaliser. They began their hunt with a shot from Alexei Smertin that drifted wide (19’) and a shot from Andrei Solomatin that was deflected over the by-line for a corner kick (20’). 

Belgium looked for more when Marc Wilmots had a shot blocked, and after Mpenza tracked the ball down in the area, his shot was deflected out for a corner (27’). 

The pace was end-to-end as the half drew to a close, with substitute Dmitri Sychev forcing a diving save from Belgium goalkeeper Geert De Vlieger (39’) and Yves Vanderhaeghe unleashing an 18-metre drive straight at Nigmatullin (40’). 

Following a Belgium corner kick, Gert Verheyen brought down a cross at the back post but sent his eight-metre shot well off the mark (44’). 

Dmitry Khokhlov had a final chance for Russia as stoppage time approached, but his hopeful shot from the top of the penalty arc rolled wide (45’). 

As quickly as Belgium had drawn first blood to begin the match, Russia were level in the second half. Khokhlov finished a fine run with a pass to Sychev, who broke into the penalty area only to have his shot saved by De Vlieger. Vladimir Beschastnykh followed the play and volleyed the rebound just beyond the desperate reach of a Belgium defender and into the unoccupied net (1:1, 52’). 

A slow build up by Russia turned into a great chance to take the lead when Dmitry Alenichev fed Egor Titov, who had overlapped on the left side of the area. Titov laid a right-footed pass across the face of the goal, but Valery Karpin could not get a foot on the ball (74’). 

When it looked as though Russia were about to secure their spot in the round of 16, Belgium took the lead through Wesley Sonck, who had replaced Mpenza in the 70th minute. Sonck headed past Nigmatullin from eight metres after Walem’s corner kick (2:1, 78’). 

Then Belgium placed a firm grasp on a spot in the second stage when Wilmots finished from 18 metres. Bart Goor fed Wilmots at the top of the area and his left-footed strike took a deflection from a Russia defender, leaving Nigmatullin wrong-footed and finding the right-side netting (3:1, 82’). 

Sychev brought Russia back within a goal, however, when he beat a charging De Vlieger from near the penalty spot (3:2, 89’). But Belgium tightened the screws in the final minutes to limit the Russian attack and secure their place among the last 16.
