호주는 전반 2분만에 크로아티의 다리요 스르나에게 호주 골문  왼쪽  구석으로 빨려 들어가는 그림같은 프리킥 골을 먼저 내줬다. 

선취점을 빼앗겼지만 흔들리지 않은 호주는 공격의 주도권을 쥐면서 크로아티아의 골문을 위협했다. 

호주는 전반 30분 팀 케이힐이 크로아티아 오른쪽 진영에서 올라온 크로스를 헤딩슛으로 연결했지만 골키퍼 정면으로 갔고 핸리 큐얼과 제이슨 컬리나가 잇따라 슛을 날렸지만 골문은 쉽게 열리지 않았다. 

파상공세를 멈추지 않던 호주는 전반 38분 크로아티아 페널티지역에서 상대  수비수 스체판 토마스의 핸들링 반칙으로 귀중한 페널티킥을 얻었고 크레이그 무어가 침착하게 공을 골문에 차넣어 동점을 만들었다. 

후반 들어 공격을 강화한 크로아티아는 11분 니코 코바치가 호주  페널티  지역 오른쪽 밖에서 반대 방향으로 중거리 슛을 날렸고 호주의 젤코 칼라치 골키퍼가  쓰러지면서 막았지만 그대로 골문 안으로 들어갔다. 

다급해진 호주는 후반 18분 존 알로이지를 투입해 공격을 강화했지만 후반 26분 골문 앞에서 해리 큐얼이 때린 강슛이 골키퍼 품에 그대로 안기는 등 골운이 따르지 않았다. 

하지만 히딩크 감독의 마법은 크로아티전에도 힘을 발휘했다. 

호주는 후반 30분 포워드 조슈아 케네디를 투입해 승부수를 띄웠고  후반  34분 해리 큐얼이 상대 페널티지역 오른쪽에서 강슛으로 극적인 골을 성공시켜 2-2  균형을 맞췄다. 

크로아티아는 후반 38분 포워드 이반 클라스니치를 투입해 득점을 노렸지만 2분 뒤 수비수 다리오 시미치가 경고 누적으로 퇴장당하는 불운을 겪으며 끝내 호주  골문을 열지 못했다. (연합뉴스) 
 
'히딩크 매직', 또 '이탈리아 심장' 겨눈다

얄궂은 운명의 장난일까. '4강 청부사' 거스 히딩크 호주 국가대표팀 감독이 월드컵 16강 문턱에서 '아주리 군단' 이탈리아와 만난다.

호주와 이탈리아는 서로 그리 잘 아는 상대는 아니다. 그러나 히딩크 감독과 이탈리아는 낯설지 않다.

4년전 2002 한일월드컵 당시 히딩크 감독은 한국 대표팀과 함께 16강전에서 '아주리의 푸른 물결'을 넘었던 기억을 지니고 있다. 히딩크 감독으로서는 '어게인(AGAIN) 2002'를 외칠 만하고 이탈리아로서는 '타도! 히딩크'를 목놓아 부를 만 하다.

히딩크 감독이 이끄는 호주 축구대표팀은 23일 오전(한국시간) 독일 고트리브다임러 슈타디온에서 벌어진 크로아티아와의 2006년 독일월드컵 F조 최종전에서 전반 2분 상대 미드필더 스르나에게 프리킥골을 내주는 등 고전을 펼치다 후반 34분 터진 해리 큐얼의 천금같은 동점골에 힘입어 2-2 무승부를 거뒀다.
 
이로써 호주는 1승1무1패(승점 4)를 기록하며 크로아티아(2무1패)를 밀어내고 3전 전승의 브라질에 이어 조 2위를 차지했다.

32년만에 진출한 2번째 월드컵에서 16강 진출의 감격을 누린 호주. 16강 상대는 같은날 체코를 누르고 E조 1위를 움켜쥔 이탈리아다. 양팀은 26일 밤 12시 카이저슬라우테른에서 운명의 맞대결을 치른다.

히딩크 감독은 이미 4년전 한국대표팀 감독 시절 이탈리아를 충격과 슬픔에 빠뜨린 바 있다.

당시 포르투갈, 폴란드, 미국을 제치고 당당하게 D조 1위에 올랐던 한국은 16강전서 G조 2위 이탈리아와 만났다. 이탈리아의 공격수 토티는 "한국 정도는 한 골만 넣으면 이길 수 있다"고 큰소리쳤고, 이 경기에서 한국은 전반 18분 비에리에게 선취골을 허용하며 고전을 면치 못했다.

하지만 후반 들어 수비의 핵이었던 홍명보, 김태영, 김남일 대신 이천수, 황선홍, 차두리를 기용하는 초강공 작전을 꺼낸 히딩크 감독의 전략이 주효했고, 한국은 경기 종료 2분전 설기현의 짜릿한 동점골로 승부를 원점으로 돌리는 저력을 발휘했다.

결국 이날 한국은 연장전서 경기 종료 3분전 안정환의 골든골로 이탈리아를 쓰러뜨리고 당당히 8강행을 확정지었다.

이 경기는 히딩크 감독의 용병술과 전략이 최고의 성과를 낸 경기이자 한국 축구 역사상 잊을 수 없는 명승부중 한 장면으로 기억되고 있다.

이번 월드컵에서 호주 대표팀을 이끌고 16강 문턱서 이탈리아를 만난 히딩크 감독. 그가 4년전 영광을 재현하며 또 한번 이탈리아 전역을 비탄에 잠기게 할 수 있을 지 주목된다. (조이뉴스24)

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) - It took the Socceroos 32 years to get back to the World Cup. No wonder they wanted to prolong their stay. 
 

Harry Kewell scored from close range to give Australia a 2-2 draw with Croatia and send the Aussies into the second round alongside defending champion Brazil from Group F. 

Croatia took the lead in the second minute on a dipping free kick by Dario Srna. Craig Moore equalized for Australia with a penalty kick in the 39th minute after Stjepan Tomas handled the ball in the box. 

Croatia went up again in the 79th minute on a goalkeeping blunder by Zeljko Kalac, who started for regular goalie Mark Schwarzer. Croatia captain Niko Kovac shot from about 20 yards and the ball rolled over Kalac's hands. 

But Kewell put home a short shot off a scramble in the area, and Australia was headed for a matchup with Italy in Kaiserslautern on Monday. 

Instead of galvanizing the Croatians, Srna's goal awoke the Australians and prompted a series of attacks. The pressure was rewarded with the penalty kick, and Moore sent the goalkeeper one way, the ball the other. 

The match was billed as a clash of loyalties. Seven players of Croatian descent play for Australia, while three of Croatia's grew up Down Under. The ancestral ties took a back seat on the field as the players often slammed into bone-crunching tackles. 

For the entire match it seemed as if the Australians were chasing a win, battering at the Croatian defense, which looked closer and closer to buckling but kept holding up. 

Kewell and Tim Cahill tried with long shots, while captain Mark Viduka was trying short combination passes, hoping to get into closer range. 

Goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa saved a forceful shot from Kewell from point-blank range after a clever flick from Viduka late in the match, and it appeared that Croatia would hang on to the win. But Kewell took a back header from substitute John Aloisi and slammed it into the net to send the green-and-gold fans into delirium. 

Dario Simic got sent off for Croatia and Australia's Brett Emerton also received a red card in the second half. Josip Simunic was red-carded after the final whistle. 

우승후보 0순위 브라질이 일본을 대파하고 3연승으로 가볍게 16강에 올랐다. 

통산 6회 우승을 노리는 브라질은 23일 독일 도르트문트 월드컵경기장에서 열린 독일 월드컵 조별리그 최종전에서 호나우두의 2골 등을 앞세워 일본을 4-1로 제압했다. 

이날 승리로 월드컵 본선에서 10연승의 금자탑을 세운 브라질은 오는 28일 0시 도르트문트 월드컵경기장에서 '검은 돌풍' 가나와 8강 진출을 다툰다. 

거스 히딩크 감독이 이끄는 호주도 같은 시간 슈투트가르트에서 열린  크로아티아와 경기에서 후반 34분 터진 전방 공격수 해리 큐얼의 극적인 동점골에 힘입어 2-2로 비겼다. 

32년만에 월드컵 본선 무대를 밟은 호주는 조별리그 성적 1승1무1패로 승점 4점을 확보, 브라질에 이어 조 2위로 사상 처음으로 16강에 진출했다. 

호주는 오는 27일 0시 카이저슬라우테른에서 E조 1위인 이탈리아와 8강 티켓을 놓고 격돌한다. 

반면 독일월드컵의 다크호스로 평가받아온 발칸 반도의 강호 크로아티아는 히딩크의 마법을 넘지 못하고 2무1패의 초라한 성적표를 안고 고개를 떨궜다. 

또 아시아의 강호 일본도 세계 축구의 높은 벽을 실감하며 1무2패로 1승도 올리지 못한채 본선 16강 진출을 다음 기회로 미뤘다. 

◇ 브라질-일본 
 
브라질이 예상치 못한 선제골을 내줬지만 우승 후보다운 막강한 화력을 뽐내며 일본에 쓰디쓴 패배를 안긴 한판이었다. 

이미 16강 진출을 확정짓고 가벼운 마음으로 경기에 나선 브라질은 카푸와 카를루스 등을 벤치에 앉혔지만 일본은 상대가 되지 않았다. 

경기 초반 잠깐 공세를 취하던 일본은 공격수까지 모두 후방으로 불러들여 브라질의 공세를 막아내기에 바빴지만 첫 골은 일본이 따냈다. 

일방적으로 몰리다 브라질에서 귀화한 알렉스가 전광석화처럼 볼을 몰고 들어가 브라질 골지역 왼쪽으로 쇄도하던 다마다 게이지에게  건넸고 다마다는  전반  34분 벼락 슈팅으로 골문을 갈랐다. 

그러나 일본의 우세는 오래 가지 못했다. 전반 인저리 타임 때 호나우지뉴가 오른쪽 측면을 침투한 시시뉴에게  패스를 배달하자 시시뉴는 문전에서 자리를 잡고  있던 호나우두 머리에 정확하게 맞혀줘 동점골을 뽑아냈다. 

브라질은 후반 8분 주니뉴가 30ｍ짜리 중거리슛을 골문 오른쪽 모서리에 꽂아넣어 승기를 잡았다. 

일본 수비수들이 잔뜩 움츠러들어 골 지역 주변에 몰려 있는 것을 본 주니뉴의 재치넘치는 골이었다. 

빈틈을 본 브라질은 6분 뒤 지우베르투가 골 지역 왼쪽에서 강력한 오른발 슈팅으로 추가골을 빼내 일본을 그로기 상태로 몰아넣었다. 

호나우두는 후반 36분 호나우두가 주앙과 삼각패스를 주고 받은 끝에  1골을 보태며 게르트 뮐러(독일)가 갖고 있는 월드컵 본선 최다골 기록과 어깨를 나란히 했다. (연합뉴스)

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) - Ronaldo found his goal-scoring touch to finally give Brazil the kind of convincing victory many expected to be routine in this World Cup. 

Ronaldo scored twice to tie the all-time record with 14 career World Cup goals and Brazil clinched Group F with a 4-1 victory that eliminated Japan from the tournament Thursday night. 

With its second-round berth already secured, Brazil fielded five reserve players and got goals from two of them, Juninho and Gilberto. But it was Ronaldo who was the star in Brazil's record 10th straight World Cup win. 

Criticized for his weight and sluggish performances in early games, Ronaldo appeared close to top form. 

"I'm very happy with my performance, with the two goals and with Brazil's victory," Ronaldo said. "Now it's time to rest and think about the round of 16." 

He tied the game at 1 with a header a minute into first-half injury time. He was set up by Real Madrid teammate Cicinho, who sent him the ball with a header across the area. Ronaldo scored his second goal in the 81st, with a right-footer from 20 yards after a set up by defender Juan. 

The first goal moved him past Pele as Brazil's all-time scoring leader in the competition and the second tied the record held by Gerd Mueller of Germany. 

Brazil will play Ghana in the second round on Tuesday back in Dortmund. 

Japan is headed back home after finishing last in the group with one point, failing to repeat its second-round appearance from when it co-hosted the 2002 tournament. The Japanese, coached by former Brazilian all-star Zico, needed to defeat the five-time champions to have any chance to advance. 

Zico changed both his starting strikers to try to boost the attack, and it seemed to work when the Japanese surprisingly took the lead despite being outplayed by Brazil. 

Keiji Tamada, one of the new forwards, put Japan ahead in the 34th minute with a powerful left-footer from inside the area, completing a through pass by Alessandro Santos. Tamada received the ball unmarked, then quickly fired into the left-upper corner of the net. 

After Ronaldo tied it at the end of the half, Brazil took the game over in the second half. Juninho, replacing regular starter Ze Roberto, scored in the 53rd minute with a shot from about 25 yards that appeared to change directions at the last minute and fool Japan goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi. 

Gilberto, replacing Roberto Carlos, got Brazil's third goal in the 59th after a neat through pass from Ronaldinho. Gilberto entered the area unmarked and sent a low left-footer past Kawaguchi. 

The goal by Japan ended Brazil's string of four straight World Cup shutouts since beating England 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2002 tournament. Brazil could have equaled Italy's record of five straight shutouts in the 1990 World Cup. 

Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira's changes to the lineup - leaving out veteran wingers Cafu and Roberto Carlos, midfielders Emerson and Ze Roberto and striker Adriano - worked from the beginning. 

Cicinho, Gilberto, Gilberto Silva, Juninho and Robinho all played well and contributed to Brazil's victory. 

"You don't win a World Cup with 11 players," Parreira said. "It's important you have a group prepared to play whenever necessary." 

Robinho, who had substituted for Ronaldo in the first two matches, added speed to Brazil's attack from the start, creating several scoring opportunities and setting up his teammates in several occasions. 

Despite the goal allowed, Brazil controlled possession and dominated most of the match, only failing to get more goals because of saves by Kawaguchi. 

Brazil had struggled in its first victories over Croatia and Australia. The defending champions, who entered the tournament heavily favored to win a record sixth title, performed well below expectations, being heavily challenged and failing to impress.
