Portugal tops Turkey
Figo leads 'Brazilians of Europe' into semifinals

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- Entertaining and effective, Portugal is in the semifinals of the European Championship for the second time in its history.

°í¸ÞÁî-ÇDZ¸ÄÞºñPortugal's Nuno Gomes (left) and Luis Figo celebrate after Gomes scored his second goal to lift Portugal past Turkey. AP

With dazzling passing and a free-flowing game that mesmerized understrength Turkey and spectators under the closed roof of Amsterdam's ArenA, Portugal got two goals from Nuno Gomes off two splendid touches by Luis Figo to win 2-0 on Saturday.

Turkey played two-thirds of the match a man down and never mounted a serious challenge to Portugal's "golden boys," the closest a European team has come to resemble Brazil at Euro 2000.

"We're a very ambitious group," Costinha said.

Turkey also missed a penalty in the closing seconds of the first half-time when the game was still tight and Portugal danced away with the match.

Portugal will play the winner of Sunday's quarterfinal between Spain and world champion France in Brussels on Wednesday.

"It's not bad to be confident," Figo said, looking supremely confident himself after the match. "We have our quality, we have our chance."

"We try to enjoy the game. It's only a game but it's important to win. If you can play well and win, that's more important."

One minute from half-time, Portuguese creativity finally broke down Turkey's defensive wall when Figo, yet again the star of the match, sent a low bouncing cross into the area and striker Nuno Gomes dived low to deflect it past Rustu Recber.

In the 56th minute, Figo faked his way past Hakan Unsal, put a precision pass on the foot of the unmarked Nuno Gomes, who only had to tap it into the empty net and put the game beyond the reach of the undermanned underdog.

Turkey had been down a man since the 29th minute when Alpay Ozalan was sent off for hitting Fernando Couto when both were down after a duel for the ball in the air.

"When you play against a team like Portugal with 10 men it's always going to be difficult," said Turkey's Muzzy Izzet.

"The sending off was a turning point," he said.

For the first time in the history of the European Championships, a match was played effectively indoors because the roof at the 50,000-capacity ArenA stadium was closed to keep the rain out.

After some early forays by Turkey, Portugal quickly took control of the game while the Turks crowded their defense to try to stifle the flashy Portuguese side.

The Turks tried hard to overcome their one-man deficit and could even have come back into the match in stoppage time at the end of the first half-time.

Turkey earned the penalty after a bad clearance by Jorge Costa forced Couto to bring down Arif Erdem.

The midfielder took the penalty himself and shot straight at Vitor Baia. The deflected shot reached Hakan Sukur but Baia smothered it to protect the well-deserved Portuguese lead.

Portugal, which had won all three of its group games and eliminated defending champion Germany with its reserves, began the second half-time with midfielder Paulo Sousa replacing Costinha.

In the 56th, Figo, the Barcelona midfielder, again showed his class. He slipped the ball past Hakan Unsal, sprinted past the Turkish defender and guided a perfect pass to Nuno Gomes at the far post. Unmarked, the striker only had to put out his foot to tap the ball in.

Nuno Gomes scored his first career goal for Portugal when he notched the winner in the opening come-from-behind 3-2 victory over England.

The Portuguese were so dominant by the middle of the second half that they were creating chances every minute. Only the agility of Rustu and some careless finishing prevented Portugal from romping to a huge lead.

The Turks stuck to their defensive game plan, not showing much desire to at least try to create a comeback.

Nuno Gomes was prevented from perhaps achieving a hat-trick when he was replaced by Sa Pinto. But he had also blown two earlier chances.

"I am disappointed I missed the hat-trick, but I am happy that we won," Nuno Gomes. "I hope to continue scoring and that we reach the final."

Portugal had lost to eventual champion France in extra time in 1984 in its first trip to the last four.

Apart from its flashy offensive moves, Portugal has not conceded a goal in its last three matches.

Over the whole match, referee Jol showed 8 yellow cards in addition to the red.

It was the first time Turkey had reached the quarterfinals of a major soccer tournament, having lost all of its three matches in Euro 96, without scoring a goal.

Portugal also reached the quarterfinals of the European championship in England four years ago, but surprisingly lost to the Czech Republic.

Turkish coach Mustafa Denizli rued his team's missed first half penalty.

"If we hadn't missed the penalty, the situation could have been quite different," he said of Arif Erdem's spot kick.

Denizli made no comment about the sending off of Turkish defender Alpay Ozalan after 29 minutes but said he thought Portugal's Fernando Couto, who gave away the penalty, should also have seen a red card.

"I believe that Couto should have been sent off but I think the referee didn't see the incident properly.

"Once we had a player sent off, it became very difficult for us," he added. "Alpay had not received any card in his last 15 games.

"The Portuguese team is one of the best in the world and after Alpay was dismissed we were at a serious disadvantage.

"But, after struggling in this tournament, qualifying for the quarterfinals was a good achievement for us. But we saw we still have a lot of things to learn."

Lineups:

Portugal : Vitor Baia, Jorge Costa, Costinha (46, Paulo Sousa), Fernando Couto, Dimas; Paulo Bento, Rui Costa (87, Capucho), Figo, Sergio Conceicao, Joao Pinto, Nuno Gomes (74, Sa Pinto).

Turkey : Rustu Recber; Alpay Ozalan, Ogun Temizkanoglu (84, Sergen Yalcin), Akyel Fatih; Tayfun Korkut,Okan Buruk (62, Oktay Drelioglu), Tayfur Havutcu, Ergun Penbe, Hakan Unsal; Hakan Sukur, Arif Erdem (62, Suat Kaya).
Portugal and Turkey under closed roof
It was a first at a European championship: Portugal and Turkey on Saturday played under a closed roof.

After heavy rain all day, officials at the Amsterdam ArenA decided enough was enough and opted to use the modern stadium's innovative retractable roof. Shortly after it closed, the rain stopped falling.

"It didn't really make any difference," said Portuguese defender Jorge Costa, after his team beat Turkey 2-0. "I didn't really notice."

At the 1994 World Cup in the United States, players were protected for the first time at a major soccer tournament by a closing roof at the Silverdome in Detroit.

Despite its stunning stadium, which seats 51,200 people, Amsterdam has been overlooked as the venue for the Euro 2000 final, which will be played in nearby Rotterdam instead.

As a consolation, it was awarded one of the semifinals.

The ArenA, home to FC Ajax, was built over three years between 1993 and 1996. Made of two giant 105m x 36m panels, the roof can be opened and closed in 20 minutes.

The only snag has been the pitch, which has repeatedly been re-laid because the grass has withered due to the stadium's tight confines.
Fans gather peacefully
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- One week after Euro 2000 was turned into a stage for hooligans, it was fun and games as fans from Turkey and Portugal mingled in a colorful blend ahead of their quarterfinal clash Saturday.

Only a near incessant downpour dampened the spirits of the fans, but Portuguese soccer authorities did their best to brighten things up. They provided an open-top bus in the green-red national colors that carried the nation's soccer legend Eusebio and a jazz band through the streets of downtown Amsterdam.

Ahead of the 6 p.m. (1600GMT) kickoff, there was a party atmosphere as fans from Turkey and Portugal mingled with shoppers and tourists in front of the royal palace on the central Dam square. A juggler wearing a floppy top hat in the Portuguese colors entertained fans in the red-and-white colors of Turkey while a Dixieland band in the orange colors of the co-host competed with Portuguese musicians.

Turkish and Portuguese fans stood in line to have their faces painted by makeup artists who set up stall in the square.

In the early afternoon, there were about equal numbers of Portuguese and Turkish fans. They posed together for television cameras as a spirit of soccer camaraderie spread across the city.

A small number of Dutch riot police kept a discreet presence.

In Charleroi, Belgium, hundreds of fans were detained last week before and after the clash between England and Germany. On the eve of the match, hooligan riots involving English fans destroyed part of the center of Brussels.
