Minnesota 11,
Texas 4
ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Jacque Jones hit the Minnesota Twins' first grand slam of the season and tied a career high with five RBI as they handed the Texas Rangers their 10th loss in 11 games, 11-4. With one out in the top of the second, Corey Koskie was hit by Chan Ho Park (1-2). Following Bobby Kielty's flyout, A.J. Pierzynski doubled to advance Koskie to third base. After Denny Hocking walked to load the bases, Jones clubbed Park's 2-2 offering just inside the right field foul pole to stake the Twins to a 4-0 lead. "It was a fastball that I hit," Jones said. "I just go out there and hit and that's what I did on the home run. If you start thinking, you're going to (hurt) yourself. I don't care who's on the other side. I don't read names and I don't care who's on the mound." It was Jones' second career grand slam. His first came off Jimmy Haynes on July 12, 2001 at Milwaukee. "I take the good with the bad with Jacque," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I enjoy watching him play. He's very entertaining, and that's what this game is about: entertainment." After Kielty led off the top of the fourth with a walk, Pierzynski plated him with a triple. One out later, Jones doubled in Pierzynski to make it 6-0. The Rangers got three back in the bottom of the frame. Alex Rodriguez led off the inning with his American League-leading 15th home run off Twins starter Tony Fiore (3-1). Carl Everett added a sacrifice fly and Bill Haselman an RBI single to make it 6-3. But Texas got no closer. Rodriguez and Rangers manager Jerry Narron were ejected in the middle of the fifth inning by umpire Greg Gibson for arguing a successful stolen base by Koskie in the top of the frame. Rodriguez complained -- to no avail -- that he had tagged out Koskie. "I asked (Gibson) what Alex said," Narron said. "He said that (Alex) didn't say anything, it was the way he ran off the field, as if trying to intimidate him. Word-for-word (Gibson) said that (Alex) didn't say a word. I've never heard of anything like that before." "I have no comment," crew chief Gerry Davis said. "We're going to file a report with Major League Baseball. You can contact them." Fiore, who was making his second career start, allowed three runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings en route to earning the Twins' third straight victory. "I'd like to be the guy that comes out and fills in here and there," Fiore said. "I think I battle pretty well, but without a slider I'm still a bullpen kind of guy right now." "We were not trying to kill him," Gardenhire said. "He's a bullpen guy and we didn't want to see him get beat around because he did pretty doggone good for us. The bullpen was rested so we were ready to pull him when we needed to. We wanted to give him a chance to win, but we weren't going to lose a ballgame for it." Park lasted just 3 1/3 innings -- his shortest outing of the season -- and was roughed up for six runs and four hits. He walked four batters and struck out two. "Overall our guys are battling and playing the game hard," Narron said.
"There's no lack of effort. Alex plays with as much passion as anyone in
the game. There was nothing wrong with our effort. It all comes back to
pitching. You give up a grand slam early and it just puts you in too big
a hole. But our guys won't give up ... that's one thing I can guarantee
you."
