후반10분 이탈리아는 아크 우중간서 토티의 백패스를 받은 페소도의 자로잰듯한 센터링를 문전서 기다리고 있던 델베키오가 왼발로 선취득점하며 팽팽한 균형을 허물었다. 
 
다급해진 프랑스는 앙리와 윌토르가 이탈리아 골문을 위협했으나 번번히 수비수와 ‘신의 손’톨도 골키퍼에 막혀 득점에 실패했다. 
 
반면 이탈리아는 수비에서 기습적인 역습으로 교체멤버 델 피에로가 2차례 결정적 찬스를 맞으나 바르테즈 골키퍼 선방에 막혀 추가골을 못잡으며 정규시간 후반전도 끝냈다. 
 
대기심이 로즈타임 4분을 알렸다. 이탈리아 우승이 거의 확정 돼어가던 로즈타임 3분 교체멤버 프랑스 윌토르가 아크 왼쪽서 천금같은 오른발 강슛이 톨도 골키퍼 손에 스치며 골네트로 빨려 들어간 것. 스코어는 1-1 동점. 프랑스는 간신히 승부를 연장전으로 넘기며 역전드라마의 불을 지폈다. 
 
2∼3차례의 결정적 찬스를 놓친 프랑스는 연장전반13분 피레가 왼쪽을 돌파하며 낮은 센터링을 올리자 교체멤버 트레제게가 왼발 터닝슛으로 천금같은 골든골을 터트렸다. 믿기지 않은 승리를 거둔 프랑스는 5천여 관중을 비롯 열광의 도가니로 몰아 넣었다. 
 
한편 이번 대회 개인득점 1위는 5골을 잡은 네덜란드 클루이베르트(24·바르셀로나)와 유고 밀로세비치(26·사라고사)가 공동으로 차지했다.

골든골 주인공 트레제게는 누구?

연장 골든골로 프랑스를 16년만에 유럽축구선수권대회(유로 2000) 정상에 올려놓은 다비드 트레제게(22)는 프랑스축구의 미래를 이끌 기대주. 
 
AS 모나코가 '99-2000시즌 국내 리그에서 우승하는 데 큰 몫을 한 트레제게는 주전 공격수 실뱅 윌토르와 크리스토프 뒤가리, 니콜라 아넬카에게 밀려 대표팀에서 그다지 주목을 받지 못했다. 
 
그러나 트레제게는 예선 D조 네덜란드와의 경기에서의 대회 첫 골을 넣었고 포르투갈과의 준결승에서는 결승 페널티킥을 유도해 내 프랑스를 결승까지 올린 숨은 공로자였다. 
 
지단과 앙리가 전 세계 매스컴의 화려한 조명을 받았으나 그는 여전히 그림자일수 밖에 없었다. 
 
187㎝, 75㎏의 날렵한 몸매를 갖춘 트레제게는 빠른 스피드와 강력한 슈팅, 문전에서의 활발한 움직임으로 수비를 따돌리는 기술을 고루 겸비, 이번 대회에서 맨체스터 유나이티드 등 유럽 명문클럽들의 스카우트 표적이 됐다. 
 
로제 레메르 감독은 그런 그를 놓치지 않고 후반에 교체 투입했고 보란 듯 골든골을 터뜨렸다. 
 
이번 대회를 포함한 16차례의 대표팀간 경기(A매치)에서 9골을 기록한 트레제게는 유로 2000을 통해 스타덤에 올라 2000-2001 시즌에는 이탈리아 프로축구 유벤투스로 이적, 새 출발한다.

Marco Delvecchio volleyed home a right wing cross from Gianluca Pessotto to fire the Italians ahead in the 57th minute and their supporters were celebrating victory a little too early when substitute Wiltord slid a shot past overworked Italian goalkeeper Francesco Toldo with seconds of regulation time to go. 

After both teams went close to scoring a sudden-death golden goal, it was France who completed an amazing come from behind triumph. Robert Pires danced around the Italian defenders on the left and pulled the ball back into the center, where Trezeguet was waiting to power it past Toldo into the net. 

The French fans behind that goal erupted while the Italians at the other end couldn't believe it. 

"Everybody thought we were dead," said Thierry Henry. "With the French team, it is never over.

"I was pretty annoyed the Italians were already thinking of victory. They were clapping hands and high-fiving. It was bothering me so I was really happy when the ball went in." 

"It's historic, we did a double," Deschamps said after collecting another trophy. 

"It is the willpower of the team that did it," said French coach Roger Lemerre. "The team wanted this trophy since the day it won the World Cup. 

"We said that, if there was a second left, we had to go all out for it. The miracle happened and we caused it." 

Italian coach Dino Zoff, who appeared on course to become the first to add the Euro title as a coach as well as a player in 1968, remained proud of his players. 

"We proved Italian soccer can battle against anyone," said Zoff, who has endured months of criticism from the Italian media. 

"When you feel victory is in your hands and it slips away it takes a lot out of your spirit. But it was a great effort. 

"I'm really sorry, but this is soccer." 

Just minutes before the end or regulation time the Italians fans were sure their team was about to win the title for the first time since 1968. Instead, it was a first French triumph since 1984 after a final that was far more entertaining than expected. 

It was supposed to be French flair trying to break down tough Italian defense. Although it wound up that way, it didn't start out like that. 

Italian captain Paolo Maldini cleared from Youri Djorkaeff after a break by Thierry Henry and French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez was then forced to race off his line to clear off the toes of Delvecchio. 

All in the first 90 seconds. 

In the fourth minute Francesco Totti rose to reach a left wing corner from Stefano Fiore but his poor header was wide and then Italian goalkeeper Toldo, who had a standout semifinal against the Dutch, simply stood motionless and watched a snap right wing shot from Henry hit the post and bounce clear. 

Demetrio Albertini produced a well struck drive that shavd the French crossbar but then world champion showed signs of taking control. 

After a shot from Zidane had been charged down and acrobatically cleared by Alessandro Nesta, Deschamps fired a 25-meter (yard) shot high and wide. Then a neat four man move ended with Dugarry getting into a shooting position but Mark Iuliano blocked it. 

Ligi Di Biagio was shown the yellow card for halting a great 30-meter run by Henry just as he was about to shoot a few meters outside the area. Patrick Vieira climbed too early and missed Djorkaeff's free kick. 

Barthez came so far out of his area to take a back pass from Lilian Thuram in the 36th minute that his huge clearance forward looked almost like a shot as it went straight to Toldo in the other goal. 
 
But the Italian 'keeper had to make great reflex action save a minute later, diving low to his right to hold a shot from Henry after Christophe Dugarry's run and pass.

Four minutes before half time Fabio Cannavaro became the second Italian to see the yellow card for bringing down Henry in full flight. Zidane's free kick flashed over the bar. 

Although there were many thousands of blue-shirted French and Italian fans at either end to cheer on the two finalists, there were chants of "Holland, Holland" from the orange-shirted Dutchman in the crowd who were still upset they their own team didn't make it to the final. 

With Zidane coming more and more into the game and Henry's speed worrying the Italians, the French created more openings in the early stages of the second half. 

Cannavaro had to make a good interception as Zidane sent Henry through and then the Arsenal forward used his pace to get around the back of the Italian defense on the left. But, when he pulled his cross from a tight angle, Zidane was unable to get a touch. 

The Italians sent on Alessandro Del Piero for Fiore in the 52nd minute an took the lead four minutes later. 

Pessotto broke free down the right and his low cross missed two French defenders before finding Delvecchio unmarked in front of goal and the Roma striker volleyed it home. 

It should have been 2-0 in the 58th minute when Totti put Del Piero clear on the left side of goal but the Juventus forward rolled his shot wide of the far post with only Barthez to beat. 

Then the French should have equalized when Zidane put Wiltord through on the left but the striker's weakly hit shot hit Toldo's legs and was cleared. 

Henry had a chance to level in the 68th minute when the Italians failed to clear a Zidane free kick from the right but Toldo's legs blocked his angled, close range shot at the far post. 

Henry got into a good position again wide of the far post but Toldo was there again to block his shot while the Italians began to pull more men back to try and stop the Frenchmen equalizing. 

Trezeguet went on for Djorkaeff with 14 minutes to go for a three-man strikeforce and the world cup holder continued to create openings on the left. 

But Italy almost scored another even minutes from the end when Del Piero was again out clear only for Barthez to block his shot with his leg 

Toldo made a one-handed save from Trezeguet and was unaware that the lineman was flagging but he was finally beaten in the 90th minute when Wiltord got clear on the left and fired a right-footed, angled shot across the keeper and inside the far post to force the final into extra time. 

Extra time was four minutes old when Toldo came to the Italians rescue again with a great double save -- blocking a fiercely hit 25-meter shot from substitute Pires and then grabbing the ball again as Zidane tried to collect the rebound. 

The Italian goalkeeper was angry as Zidane's follow through and needed treatment for a facial injury with the French fans behind him jeering and accusing him of time wasting. 

Del Piero then had a chance to finish the match when he collected a well placed pass from Demetrio Albertini only to turn and curl his left footed shot far too high. 

Zidane fired a free kick over the bar and then had an acrobatic shot deflected behind before the Pires-Wiltord combination won the title for France. 

The suspended Gianluca Zambrotta, who received a red card in the semifinal against the Dutch, was replaced by the defensive-minded Gianluca Pessotto. 

French midfielder Emmanuel Petit started on the bench after coming down with a bout of the flu early in the weekend. Youri Djorkaeff and Christophe Dugarry, who were benched for the semifinal against Portugal, both made a return for the final. Nicolas Anelka was also left on the bench.

프랑스와 이탈리아의 유로 2000 결승전. 

지난 프랑스 월드컵 8강에서 맞붙었던 적이 있던 두 팀간의 정상을 향한 대결은 시작부터 치열했다. 

델 피에로와 인자기 대신 델베키오와 토티의 조합을 선발카드로 택한 이탈리아는 기본 3-5-2를 바탕으로 3-5-1-1에 가까운 포메이션으로 경기에 임했다. 

반면 프랑스는 이전 경기와 거의 차이를 두지 않은 전술과 선수 기용을 보였는데, 프티대신 비에이라를 수비형 미드필더로 기용한 것이 변화라면 변화라 할 수 있었다. 

초반 빠른 롱패스 공방을 주고받은 양팀의 플레이에 나타난 특징을 살펴보자면, 이탈리아는 준결승전과 달리 다소 적극적인 공격에의 의지를 보이긴 했지만 역시 수비에 포인트를 둔 경기 운영이라 할 수 있었다. 

탄탄한 수비를 바탕으로 미드필드에서의 안정적인 패스플레이를 전개해 나가며 최전방으로의 연결을 모색해보지만, 적은 공격 가담 인원과 상대 수비수 데사이의 적절한 전담 마크에 델베키오의 움직임이 봉쇄 당하면서 득점과 연결되는 찬스를 갖을 수 없었던 것이 전반 이탈리아 공격의 한계였다. 

프랑스 역시도 팀전력의 절반이라 할 수 있는 지단이 카나바로와 알베르티니 등에 교차 방어를 당하면서 적절한 연결이 이루어지지 않았고 앙리만이 스피디한 돌파로 이탈리아 문전을 위협했지만 노련한 이탈리아의 지능적인 수비에 번번히 차단 당할 수밖에 없었다. 

후반 피오레를 대신해 에이스 델 피에로를 교체투입하며 승부수를 띄운 이탈리아는 10분만에 토티의 힐패스 연결을 받은 페소토의 센터링을 델베키오가 선제 득점에 성공하면서 앞서 나간다. 

이에 반격에 나선 프랑스는 지단을 중심으로 하는 중앙의 공격 루트와, 센터 서클부근에서의 빠르고 긴 연결에 의한 사이드 돌파를 시도하는 두 개의 공격 루트로 공격선을 다변화하면서 이탈리아 문전을 위협한다. 

여러 차례 프랑스의 공세가 이어지는 가운데 이탈리아 역시도 전반부터 부진했던 피오레를 대신해 플레이메이커로서 제역할을 다해준 토티의 활약으로 델 피에로에게 두어 번의 찬스가 연결되지만 거듭 무위에 그치면서 경기의 흐름을 프랑스에 내주게 된다. 

여러 차례 앙리와 윌토르의 좌측 돌파가 페소토, 카나바로의 겹수비에 차단 당하고 중앙 쪽에서의 무리한 개인 돌파가 번번히 이탈리아 수비망에 걸리면서 경기는 어느새 종반부에 치닫고 이탈리아 벤치는 승리를 예감한 듯 모두 어깨동무를 한 채 시간이 흐르기만을 기다렸다. 

그러나 운명의 장난은 바로 이때부터 시작되었다. 90분 내내 철통같았던 수비가 앙리와 윌토르의 돌파에 조금씩 균열이 가기 시작한 것이다. 

로스타임 3분경. 무모하리 만치 좌측을 돌파하던 프랑스가 드디어 윌토르의 극적인 동점골로 기사회생의 기회를 맞게 된다. 

이어진 연장 승부. 계속되는 프랑스의 공세는 윌토르의 바통을 이어받은 피레의 좌측 돌파에 의해 끝을 보고야 말았다. 

피레가 좌측에서 올려준 볼을 후반 교체 투입된 트레제게가 왼발 논스톱 슈팅으로 골그물을 가르면서 결국 유럽 축구 정상의 자리를 향한 총성 없는 전쟁은 막을 내리게 된 것이다. 

네덜란드 전 연장 승부차기로 체력적인 부담을 안을 수밖에 없었던 이탈리아는 후반 선취골 이후 지나친 수비 위주의 경기 운영으로 패배를 자초했다고 할 수 있다. 

후반 톨도의 눈부신 선방과 카나바로, 네스타, 율리아노로 이어지는 수비진의 견고함이 다시 한번 그 위용을 자랑하긴 했지만, 상대적으로 허약한 미드필드 진이 시종 타이트한 압박을 구사한 프랑스의 탄탄한 미드필드를 넘어서지 못한 채 90분 동안의 승리에 만족해야만 했다. 

한편, 막판 교체 투입된 피레, 윌토르, 트레제게의 줄기찬 측면 공격이 주효한 프랑스는 수비와 미드필드, 그리고 공격 전 부분에서 안정된 전력을 선보이며 막판까지 승리에의 집념을 불태운 것이 승리의 원동력이었다고 할 수 있다. 

데사이와 블랑의 믿음직한 수비, 리자라주와 튀랑의 적극적인 공격 가담, 한층 기량이 향상된 앙리의 스피디한 문전 공략, 그리고 마지막으로 세계 최고의 플레이메이커 지단의 노련한 경기 운영이 그 완숙미를 더하면서 결국 프랑스가 월드 챔피언의 자존심을 지킬 수 있었던 대회였다고 평하고 싶다.
