이탈리아는 25일(이하 한국시간) 벨기에 브뤼셀 킹보드윈 스타디움서 열린 유럽축구선수권대회(유로2000) 두번째 8강전에서 프란세스코 토티(24·AS로마)의 선제골과 필리포 인자기(27·유벤투스)의 추가골로 ‘발칸의 전사’루마니아를 2-0으로 제압했다. 이로써 이탈리아는 오는 26일 로테르담서 열리는 네덜란드-유고전 승자와 4강대결을 벌인다. 

월드컵 3회우승(34, 38, 82년)의 이탈리아는 68년 유럽선수권 우승이후 32년만에 다시 정상도전에 한발짝 다가섰다. 
 
반면 일리에(경고누적)등 주전 4명이 결장한 루마니아는 하지를 비롯한 몇몇 선수들의 ‘삭발투혼’에도 불구, 역대 대회 첫 8강진출에 만족해야 했다.

오프사이드 트랩의 순간적 실수가 승패를 갈랐다. 양팀은 전반초반 너무 신중한 나머지 공격의 실마리를 제대로 못찾았다. 기회를 엿보던 이탈리아는 전반33분 아크20m 앞에서 스테파노 피오레의 살짝 띄어준 로빙볼을 토티가 루마니아 오프사이드 함정을 뚫고 가슴트래핑에 이어 오른발로 살짝 밀어넣어 선취골을 뽑았다. 또 43분에도 기습적인 오프사이드 함정을 뚫고 이탈리아 알베르티니의 패스를 받은 인자기가 아크 우중간서 치고 들어가다 오른발 강슛, 추가득점을 이끌어냈다. 
 
첫골을 내준후 루마니아는 후반34분 무투가 왼쪽중앙에서 반대편쪽으로 한번에 롱패스로 연결, 하지가 톨도 골키퍼가 나오는 것을 보고 살짝 로핑슛으로 연결했으나 골모서리를 맞고 튀어나와 결정적인 동점기회를 무산시켰다. 
 
후반14분 경고누적으로 하지가 퇴장당해 10명이 총력전을 펼친 루마니아는 이탈리아 빗장수비에 막혀 이렇다할 득점기회를 살리지 못해 아쉽게 무릎을 꿇었다. 
 
한편, 이번 대회 8강전 3번째 경기인 26일 개최국 ‘오렌지군단’네덜란드와 ‘발칸의 핵폭풍’유고와의 일전이 로테르담에서 열리며 이어 벨기에 브루헤서 8강전 최고 빅카드 스페인과 프랑스가 축구전쟁을 벌인다.

Dino Zoff's Italian team, hardly rated as title contenders before the tournament, has now won four championship games in a row. It faces either Netherlands or Yugoslavia in Amsterdam on Thursday for a place in the final for the first time since 1968. 

Zoff said he was "moderately satisfied" with his team's performance, but was disappointed with their play after Hagi was expelled. 

"Some thought reaching the quarterfinals was impossible, and we're happy with what we've accomplished," Zoff said. "But we have to play much better." 

Totti fired the Italians ahead in the 33rd minute and Inzaghi, who also hit the post near the end, made up for several previous Euro 2000 misses by hitting the second just before half time. 

Each blew kisses to their parents in the crowd after their goals.

"This team has shown real character and a great will to win," Totti said. 

The Romanians, who made it to the last eight after a dramatic 3-2 win over England in the group matches, tried to hit back but lost Hagi in the 60th minute when he was expelled for his second yellow card. 

The 35-year-old star, who has been his country's star performer for a decade and had already come out of retirement once, was shown the red card for diving to try and get a penalty. Portuguese referee Vitor Manuel Melo Pereira had shown him a yellow card only minutes earlier for a bad foul that knocked Italian midfielder Antonio Conte out of the game. 

Hagi, who missed the previous game against England because he had received two yellow cards in the tournament, was furious he had been sent off in what looked like it would be his final and 125th game in Romanian colors. He covered his face in despair as he eventually left the field. 

AS Roma's Totti, chosen for the starting lineup to Juventus star Alessandro Del Piero, fired his second goal of the competition in the 33rd minute to liven up a game that was doing little to excite the fans at the King Baudouin stadium. 

The second goal came two minutes from the break when Inzaghi took a deep pass and was left to run clear and shoot past keeper Bogdan Stelea for his second of the campaign. 

Totti also missed another chance while Inzaghi was guilty of a glaring miss early in the game. Hagi hit the post at the other end. 

With team captain Gheorghe Popescu out of the competition with a ruptured calf muscle and Cosmin Contra, Dan Petrescu and Adrian Ilie all suspended the Romaians, who snatched a quarterfinal place thanks to a late penalty in the win over England, had a patched-up team. 

"We did not field our best 11," said Romanian coach Emerich Jenei. "Italy won because they scored when they had opportunities." 

But Romania had veteran midfield general Hagi back on the team after the 35-year-old had been forced to sit out the victory over the English through suspension. 

The Italians should have gone ahead in the seventh minute when Totti slipped a pass in to Inzaghi from the left. But the Juve striker fired wide once again from close range under pressure from a tackle by Constantin Galca. 

Rather than try and weave their way through Italy's well-organized defense, the Romanians tried their luck from long range but distance shots from Hagi, Adrian Mutu flew well over Francesco Toldo's goal. 

The Italians engineered another chance in the 28th minute when Inzaghi's well flighted cross from the right found Stefano Fiore in front of goal but the sliding Udinese midfielder mis-hit the shot high in the air instead of into the back of the net. 

The Romanians finally got a shot on target in the 32nd minute when Florentin Petre powered in a low, deflected drive from the edge of the area but it was well smothered by Toldo. 

As if fired up by that first real Romanian scare, Italy took the lead a minute later when the Romanians failed to completely clear a corner from the left. With the defense racing out to try and catch the Italians offside, Fiore fed a lobbed pass through to the unmarked Totti who chested it down and drove the ball past Stelea. 

Hagi responded with a break down the right to meet a cross-field ball from deep and, although he beat the advancing Toldo, his lob struck the left hand post and bounced clear. At the other end, Totti prodded the ball wide of the post as Italy pressed for another goal and it came two minutes before the break. 

Again the Romanian defense was slow to react when Demetrio Albertini volleyed a pass through the middle and Inzaghi charged clear to fire past Stelea and make it 2-0. 

Gianluca Pessotto started the second half as replacement for Italian captain Paolo Maldini who was clearly feeling an injury and Italy also lost Conte, victim of Hagi's crunching tackle by Hagi in the 62nd minute. 

Pessotto rescued the Italians with a brilliant blocking tackle to foil Romanian substitute Ioan Ganea in front of goal while Inzaghi almost grabbed a third when he took another pass from Albertini but shot against the post. 

Del Piero came in with less than 20 minutes to go, replacing Totti. The Azzurri crowd erupted, clearly directing their applause at the substitute rather than the winning goalscorer. 

Effective in his earlier appearances, including knocking in the winning goal agaist Sweden on Monday, Del Piero got few opportunities against Romania with Italy protecting their late-game lead. 

After the game, Hagi blasted the referee for showing him the red card. 

"You could see from an airplane that it was a penalty," he told reporters. "The Italian defender deserved a red, not me a yellow." 

But "what's important is that Romania demonstrated that they are a good team in this competition and that we have talented players, good young players who have a future," he said. 

Asked if it was his last game for Romania, Hagi shrugged his shoulders and left the interview area.

시작부터 치열하게 전개된 양팀간의 격돌은 완벽에 가까운 대인 마크와 동료를 이용한 커버링으로 철저하게 루마니아의 공격 루트를 차단한 뒤 빠른 역습을 노린 이탈리아의 재치 있는 경기운영에 의해 주도되어지는 양상이었다. 

초반 이탈리아는 토티와 피오레에 의해 주도되는 공격이 활발히 전개되는 듯했지만 마무리에 가서 인자기가 잦은 오프사이드를 범하면서 공격권을 연신 루마니아에 내주었고 이후 하지가 분전한 루마니아의 공세가 거칠게 이탈리아 진영을 위협했다. 

루마니아는 이후 이탈리아의 빗장 수비를 공략하는 방법으로써 수비수의 접근이 이루어지기전 잦은 중거리슈팅을 시도했고, 긴 센터링으로 이탈리아 문전을 곧장 노리는 단순한 공격을 시도했다. 한편 수비에서는 이탈리아의 빠르고 정확한 역습에 대비해 포백 중 중앙 수비수인 치우보타리우를 스위퍼에 가깝게 세우면서 조심스러운 경기 운영을 펴기도 했다. 

이후 상대 수비가 전열을 정비하기 전 빠른 스피드에 의한 침투 공격이 이탈리아의 골문을 열기 위한 가장 효과적인 방법이라고 판단한 듯 루마니아는 좌우의 페트레와 키부의 스피드를 이용한 돌파와 하지의 센스있는 공격을 앞세워 연달아 이탈리아의 골문을 두드린다. 

하지만 수비진의 발빠른 수비 전환 능력과 톨도의 눈부신 선방 덕분에 위기를 잘 넘긴 이탈리아가 첫 골을 성공시키면서 루마니아 진영을 한층 더 다급하게 만든다. 

전반 33분 콘테가 루마니아 진영 문전 전방에서 로빙으로 스루 패스해 준 볼을 골문 왼쪽에 있던 토티가 골키퍼 스텔레아를 앞두고 정확히 골문으로 찔러 넣어 선취골을 성공시킨다. 

이어 반격에 나선 루마니아가 무투의 긴 센터링으로 문전을 파고들던 하지에 연결해주고 이를 하지가 감각적인 로빙 슛을 날려보지만 골문을 살짝 빗겨 가고 만다. 

하지만 공세가 거세면 거셀수록 빈틈은 오히려 많아지는 법. 

이런 루마니아의 틈새를 지능적으로 간파한 알베르티니의 발에서 두 번째 골이 만들어진다. 알베르티니가 중앙에서 치고 올라오던 루마니아 수비의 오프사이드 트랩을 무너뜨리는 절묘한 어시스트를 만들어주고 이를 쇄도하던 인자기가 쉽게 성공시켜 승부는 더더욱 이탈리아 쪽으로 기울고 만다. 

후반 들어 루마니아는 패트레가 활발히 오른쪽을 돌파하고 이탈리아 축구에 익숙한 무투와, 몰도반과 교체된 가네아가 빠르고 잽싼 몸놀림으로 이탈리아 진영을 위협하면서 여러 차례 찬스를 만들어 간다. 

그렇지만 이에 맞서는 이탈리아 수비의 노련한 커버 플레이와 빠른 판단력, 그리고 민첩한 순발력에 의한 위기 대처 능력이 순간 순간 큰 힘을 발휘하면서 결국에 가서는 루마니아 공격을 무력화시키고 만다. 

그런 가운데 전반 14분 PK를 주지 않는 심판에 항의하던 하지가 퇴장 당하면서 루마니아는 더욱 궁지에 몰리게 되고, 콘테의 부상으로 투입된 디 비아지오와 알베르티니의 중앙으로부터 전방으로의 스루패스가 적절히 앞선의 공격수에게로 연결되어 수비 라인을 허물어뜨리면서 이탈리아는 몇 차례 추가 득점 기회마저 갖게 된다. 

결국 뒤진 가운데 전원 공격의 양상을 보이며 가네아와 무투를 앞세워 추격의 실마리를 찾아보려 했던 루마니아의 애절한 노력은 주심의 종료 휘슬과 함께 끝이 나면서 루마니아는 지난 유로 96에 이어 또한번의 좌절을 맛보아야했고, 반면 이탈리아는 32년만의 정상을 향한 순항을 계속하게 되었다. 

대회 시작전 잇딴 평가 전에서의 부진과 베스트 11의 구성을 둘러싸고 이탈리아 팬들의 끊임없는 원성을 들어야했던 디노 조프 이탈리아 감독. 

팀의 에이스 델 피에로를 선발에서 제외시키고 신예 피오레와 토티를 신임한 그의 모험과도 같은 용병술이 현재까지는 큰 탈 없이 잘 맞아떨어지고 있다고 할 수 있다. 이는 이들을 뒤에서 받쳐주는 말디니와 알베르티니 등 노장 선수들의 충분한 지원에 기인한다고도 볼 수 있다. 

하지만 무엇보다 네스타를 정점으로한 안정된 수비 라인이 이탈리아의 질주에 가장 큰 강점이 작용하고 있다는 사실은 누구도 부인할 수 없을 것이다. 

다만 네덜란드와의 대결이 예상되는 4강전과 그 이후의 결승전을 예상컨대, 보다 미드필드와 수비가 강한 적수를 만났을 때, 그들의 효과적인 역습이 얼마만큼의 위력을 발휘할지가 궁금해지는 대목이 아닐 수 없다.

이탈리아와 포르투갈이 각각 조별 리그 파란의 주인공인 루마니아와 터키에 2-0 완승을 거두며 4강 고지에 올라섰다. 

이탈리아는 25일(한국시간) 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 열린 유럽축구선수권대회 8강전에서 토티와 인자기의 연속골에 힘입어 동구의 강호 루마니아를 2-0으로 물리쳤다. 세계 최고의 수비진을 자랑하는 이탈리아는 빠른 공수전환을 주 무기로 전후반 내내 루마니아를 위협했다. 

항상 그렇지만 이탈리아는 루마니아와의 8강전에서도 경기 초반 수비에 중점을 둔 경기를 펼쳤다. 대인 방어 능력이 뛰어난 수비수들이 하지를 비롯한 루마니아의 공격수들을 적절하게 차단했고 인자기와 토티를 최전방 공격수로 내세워 위협적인 역습을 시도했다. 루마니아는 전반 초반부터 거센 공격을 펼쳤지만 끝내 이탈리아의 골문을 열지 못했다. 

더군다나 루마니아는 수비의 핵인 포페스쿠와 페트레스쿠가 부상으로 경기에 출전하제 못했다. 수비진을 전체적으로 조율하면서 상대의 공격을 업사이드 트랩으로 차단해 온 루마니아로서는 선장 없는 배를 바다에 띄운 셈이었다. 결국 이날 이탈리아가 뽑아낸 두 골 모두 루마니아 수비진의 어설픈 업사이드 트랩에서 시작했다. 

일진일퇴를 거듭하던 균형이 깨진 것은 전반 33분 경. 미드필더로부터 토티에게 공중 패스된 것은 토티가 차분하게 트래핑 골기퍼의 겨드랑이 사이를 통과하는 첫 골을 뽑아냈다. 첫 골을 성공시킨 이탈리아는 특유의 빗장 수비를 가동시키며 미드필드부터 상대 선수에 대한 대인 방어로 루마니아의 공격을 차단했다. 

첫 골을 뺏긴 루마니아는 하지를 앞세워 반격에 나섰다. 하지만 골기퍼와 1대1 찬스에서 날린 하지의 슛이 골 포스트를 맞고 나오는 등 운도 따르지 않았다 

한차례 실점위기를 넘긴 이탈리아는 미드필드에서 상대의 공격을 차단하며 역습을 노렸다. 그리고 전반 43분 미드필드에서 단 한번의 패스로 연결된 기회를 필리포 인자기가 두 번째 골을 연결시키며 승리를 굳혔다. 

전반을 0-2로 리드 당한 채 마친 루마니아는 후반 시작부터 총 공세에 나섰지만 13분 경 루마니아 전력의 50% 이상이라고 평가 받는 하지가 쓸데없는 판정 불복 행동으로 퇴장을 당했다. 하지가 퇴장 당한 직후 탈락위기에 몰린 루마니아 선수들의 투지가 살아나 이탈리아 골문을 위협했지만 그것이 루마니아의 마지막이었다. 결국 루마니아는 전반 0-2의 열세를 만회하지 못하고 8강에서 떨어졌다. 

준결승에 진출한 이탈리아는 네덜란드-유고 전의 승자와 30일 4강 진출을 다툰다. 

한편 네덜란드 암스테르담에서 벌어진 포르투갈과 터키의 경기에서는 포르투갈이 유럽 최고의 게임 메이커로 평가 받는 피고와 최전방 공격수 누노 고메스 콤비의 활약으로 사상 처음 8강에 진출한 터키를 2-0으로 누르고 제일 먼저 4강 진출을 확정지었다. 

포르투갈은 26일 열리는 스페인-프랑스 전의 승자와 결승 진출을 놓고 대결한다
