01Gen1401 Abram Rescues Lot

It came to pass that four kings, led by the king of Elam, came and fought against the five kings of the cities of the Jordan Valley, which is now the salt sea. The kings of the Jordan Valley were the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Bela, and Zeboiim or Zoar.

These five kings joined forces in the vale of Siddim and fought against the king of Elam there. The vale of Siddim was full of slime pits. The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah lost the battle and began to flee. Many of their men fell into the slime pits and died. Others fled to the mountains.

The king of Elam went into all the cities of the valley and took all the goods. He also took all the people living in the cities as prisoners. He took Lot, Abram's nephew, who lived in Sodom, and all his goods. The king of Elam then started on his way back home.

One of the soldiers who managed to escape from the king of Elam went looking for Abram. When he found him he told him of all that had happened, and how Lot had been taken prisoner.

You or I might have said that Lot deserved what was happening to him because of his selfish choice. But not his uncle Abram. He armed himself, and summoned his trained servants, all three hundred and eighteen of them, and went after the king of Elam.

Abram caught up with him at a place called Dan. Abram divided up his men into groups. Then, by night, he attacked and killed many of the soldiers of the king of Elam. The rest became frightened and fled. Abram and his servants chased after them all the way to Hobath, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

Abram recovered all the stolen goods and prisoners, including Lot and his goods. Then returned to the Jordan Valley.

On his way back a man by the name of Melchizedek, which means king of righteousness, king of peace, came out to meet him. He was the king of Salem, and high priest of the most high God. The same God that Abram worshipped. He brought bread and grape juice for Abram and his men. Melchizedek blessed Abram servant of the most high God, Who delivered Abram's enemies into his hands. Abram then gave Melchizedek tithes or one tenth of all the spoils.

Someone else came out to meet Abram too. The king of Sodom who had fled during the fight. He asked that Abram only return all the people. The goods he could keep. But Abram would not hear of it. All that he would accept is what his men had eaten, and a portion for the men which went with him to fight.

Again we see the generosity of Abram. It was his right as victor of a battle to take all the goods for himself. But he did not want to become rich from the misfortunes of others. He trusted God, and wanted only God to make him rich.

You would think that after something as terrible as this war happening to the cities of the Jordan Valley, and then being rescued by Abram, that the people of the valley would have turned from their evil ways. But sad to say, they did not. They only became worse.
